What To Take To The Hospital

When you are a first time mother, you don't know what to expect period. People tell you all about their personal experiences and this just tends to be more nerve wracking for you the expectant mother. You hear that you need to pack a bag and get it ready for the hospital, because you will be in such a rush to get there. But what do you take with you to the hospital? Well here are some helpful tips so you have everything ready to go when your water breaks.

First of all, you shouldn't wait until your water breaks to pack your bags. Have your bag packed and waiting by the door you leave out of, at least a week before your due date.

Make sure that when its time to go to the hospital, you or your husband has a watch with a second hand. This way you can time your contractions, this will be very helpful for when you get to the hospital.

Make sure you have a cell phone, and on your way to the hospital make the necessary calls to family and relatives that you want to be at the hospital. Grandparents, sisters, and brothers, mothers in laws etc. Let your husband concentrate on driving and if your not in to much pain then you should try to make the calls.

For your laboring room when you are in labor, you should bring warm socks, hospital rooms are usually cold, a couple of washcloths for sweating and if you would like your own birthing gown, which can be a nightgown or whatever you want it to be. The hospital usually supplies these things for you so if you are a light packer you can leave these things at home.

For your hospital room you are going to need a robe, and some nightgowns, again the hospital will provide these if you don't want to take these. Slippers and some sweatpants and a sweatshirt, your makeup and everything you are going to need to get ready, hairdryer curling iron etc. You most likely won't look so hot after you have your baby, and since you will have visitors it's a good idea to bring thes thing. Also if you have a preference on sanitary napkins bring these or else the hospital will have these as well.

For going home you are going to need, an outfit, a nursing bra, if planning to breast feed, or just a bra. Underwear, shoes you get the point. A jacket if it's cold outside. Last but not least a couple bags to bring home flowers and presents

For the babies ride home you are going to need a car seat, an outfit including an undershirt and socks or booties, a couple of heavy baby blankets, one to swaddle baby in and if it's cold outside another one to cover babies head.

A Hug Goes A Long Way

Do you like to be hugged? Do you hug your children? Do you hug your lover? Do you hug your parents? Do you hug your dog? Do you hug your friends? If you answered yes or not to any of these questions, read on.

Hugging your children is something that is so simple it can easily be missed. Your children will love it. Of course, when they start getting older and hugging them in front of their friends is a definite No ?No.

Hugging your children in the privacy of their own home is a different story. Every person loves to be hugged. It makes them feel special. Their self-esteem will soar.

Why is it so hard to hug your loved ones? The days of not showing your family affection are long over. In the broken family unit when one parent is s raising the children alone - and the children are in mass confusion - why can't a hug become as simple as brushing your teeth?

When was the last time you hugged your parents? You can be young or you can be middle aged or just plain elderly. You can still hug and be hugged.

Hugging between married couples is sometimes forgotten. A woman likes to cuddle and be hugged. When their partner in romance understands this their relationship will be smoother, much more romantic.

We need more hugging and affection in this world today. We definitely need less violence and wars.

Try to make it a daily task to hug your loved ones. Make it a task to hug your extended family, Make it a task to hug your friends.

A hug goes a long way.

Breastfeeding Today

One of the most nurturing, natural and healthy things you can do for your new born child is breastfeed them when they are young.

The first time you breastfeed, you may have no idea how to do it the best way. This can make you feel frustrated, especially if you are a new mom, as well. However, when you are given instructions the frustration can quickly change to a rewarding experience for both you and your baby.

Using a Breast Pump

If you prefer not to breastfeed in public or if you are a new mom that works, you might want to consider buying a breast pump. Numerous brands and styles are available in most pharmacies and several are portable, easy to carry in your hand bag.

In addition, breast milk stores well for a couple of days in sealed containers, in the refrigerator. Your baby will stay healthy and well fed, even though you are not around to breastfeed.

Understanding What Your Baby Needs

First and important things you will want to understand when you are planning to breastfeed are; when to start, how frequently do you do it, and for how long. Since your baby, like all babies, is unique, how long you want to breastfeed is something you will have to figure out. Many physicians suggest one year, though your child may choose to stop before that.

Using Formula

Formula is a perfectly fine and acceptable choice, particularly if you are not able to breastfeed. The key is to feed and nourish your baby in whatever way you can. Today, with our modern knowledge of nutrition, a lot of formulas have similar nutrients that breast milk has.

Formula is an acceptable choice if you are not able to breastfeed. The key is to feed and nourish your baby in whatever way you can. Today, with our modern knowledge of nutrition, a lot of formulas have similar nutrients that breast milk has.

Even experienced mothers with several children may be able to share the differences that they say in their own infants in dealing with sickness and getting any allergies.

Breastfeeding can build an important closeness with mother and child, that help both of them adjust to their new lifestyle. Babies will experience again, the warmth and secure feeling of being physically near the body that they were joined with day for 9 months. New mothers, especially need time to adjust to the responsibilities and physical demands placed on them.

Many times, breastfeeding can stimulate each of the five senses more and help to build their memory. Over and over, each time the new born is fed, they can see their mom, smell her, touch her, taste the milk from her, and hear her as she takes a breath or possibly even pick up her heart beat by being next to her ribcage.

Breastfeeding is an important part of bonding with your baby, giving your baby the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and more.

How To Prepare Children For School

Here are the answers that should help shore up your concerns and make the transition from home to school easier.

What should I do first?

Fill in the forms. In addition, also take your child for allergy testing and a medical exam. Include this information. Even if it seems like too much, it probably isn't. Remember that schools have heard it all and seen it all.

How do I get my child interested in going to school?

In the year before going to school, pick two times a week to show him or her how to do basic children's educational workbooks. Teach your child all of the letters, all of the numbers up to ten and show him or her how to do worksheets such as matching same and different. These two times a week should be without interruptions from other children but as we know it can be difficult, give the other child something to do in another area. These two times a week should be at least forty-five minutes long which is the duration of fairly long primary subjects at times.

Teach your child to write all the letters and show your child easy words like on and off.

Then of course, put in a few good words about school every time your child does school work. "You'll get lots more worksheets at school!"

What does my child need to know in terms of safety?

You need to stress to them that if they get locked out at the end of recess or somehow misplaced onto the outside of the building, they are supposed to go around to the front door. Before school starts, go to the school grounds and do at least nine sessions where your child goes around to the front door.

Four and five year olds do not know where this door is usually and every year, there are children that do walk home because a supply teacher or even a regular teacher didn't do a head count. As frightening as this is, simply look at this as a practice drill. By physically doing it, you shouldn't have any concerns.

You also need to let your child know that while he or she is at school other adults will be the boss. Explain that they must listen and use their best manners. Some children already pros at playing parents against one another will start to do the same between teachers and home. So put your foot down right away and let your child know that when you're not around, the teacher is the boss. This is a safety feature because children who float authority may not do what they are told in a drill situation.

At most schools, there are now code reds where a school practices what to do if a stranger is on the property. These code reds can be exhilarating for the children and they may talk out in excitement. Explain code reds and fire drills. Code reds mean the door is shut and everybody goes to sit and be quiet on the farthest wall from the door.

What do I do on the first day of school?

Take pictures the whole time. Praise your child. Expect them to get ready themselves and show them that you are proud of them. By making this day like the olympics warm-up, your child doesn't have any other choice but to be excited too! Fill them up with that first time warmth.

With these tips, your child should be well on their way to getting ready for school.

Home Birthday Party Ideas For Kids: 8 Tips For Stress-Free Children's Celebrations

So, you're planning to host your child's birthday party at home. But how to make it fun without spending a fortune and driving yourself crazy?

The trick is to keep things simple. Here are some home birthday party ideas to make your celebration a success.

*Keep it short. I learned the hard way that three hours is too long for a party. Schedule two and a half hours instead. Many children will arrive late resulting in a two-hour party, which is perfect.

*Invite only girls or boys. This limits party size and makes it easier to plan activities that engage everyone.

*Encourage drop-offs. Entertaining kids and parents divides your attention and makes it hard to host if your space is small. Note a "pick up" time on invitations. By grade school, most children can handle parties on their own.

*Mix and match. Nothing limits options more or makes the bill add up faster than organizing a party around a theme. Let your child pick a special cake and mix and match decorations and activities.

*Create the goodies. If the kids do a craft, like beading, as an activity, the necklaces they make can serve as the treat to take home.

*Give the sibling a job. Our "birthday sister" sticks the candles in the cake and announces activities. She's been completely co-opted.

*Stock up on silly string. Kids love to spray the stuff. And they also love to pick it up, packing it into little balls. Like magic, the mess disappears. Plan on one can per kid.

*Skip the party. Offer to take your child and a few friends on a special birthday outing instead. The zoo or a movie followed by ice cream - almost any outing is easier than throwing a party. And the kids have just as much fun.

Dozens of Baby Shower Themes

Choosing themes is the first step in planning a baby shower. Or, you may choose not to have a theme at all. However, having a theme for your shower should make the party entertaining, fun, and a memorable experience.

Before picking a theme, decide on what your guests would find enjoyable. Put yourself in their shoes and think about what you would want to do if you were the guests. Themes for your shower are time savers by providing a focus on the party.

The theme you decide on will determine everything else about the baby shower. The location, whom to invite, what kind of decorations, games, food and beverages.

You also need to determine if the shower will be before the baby arrives or after.

One of the themes that the Ladies would like would be a tea theme party. There are tea gift baskets that would work well with a tea theme party. Not only can Gift Baskets provide the theme for the shower, they can double as a centerpiece for your table decorations. With so many themed gift baskets available, you will be able to use a gift basket for almost any theme.

Aches and Pains a Pregnant Woman Complains About

One of the most irritating problems of pregnancy is morning sickness and nausea. About 80% of the pregnant ladies complain of these symptoms at least at the beginning of the pregnancy or at least from time to time, it is the most common tribulation of pregnancy. Best tips for struggling against morning sickness is keeping your blood sugar level constant; you can do this by eating regular meals and not drink and eat at the same time during the day. Try to keep away from strong smells, eat stomach- friendly meals and wear only comfortable clothing. Some wristbands for pregnancy nausea might also be helpful.

Another bothersome problem is tiredness all the time. You need to get used sleeping more often, slowing down at least until the second semester when a part of your strength will come back to you.

Especially at the beginning of the pregnancy period you might feel breast pains, it may seem to you aching and swollen. Lucky this symptom goes away quickly; but by that time your partner should know he must stay away from this area for a while.

The increasing level of progesterone slows down your intestinal activity. That is why constipation appears during pregnancy. To avoid this problems try exercising more, drink more water and eat fiber-rich food.

A pressure exercised by the baby's head on your anal region makes the hemorrhoid veins distend. You can fight these symptoms by using prescribed balms, keep the area clean and use ice-packs. Also try not to sit and not to stand very long.

During pregnancy abdominal muscles overstretch, hormones lead to relaxation of your back ligaments and your new posture makes the curvature of the spine stronger. Make sure you have the best position of the body, avoid sitting or standing a large period of time, don't run to much and be careful when you bend. Also sleep with a pillow between your knees.

The hormonal changes in your body can also cause heartaches. Eat regular and more meals, don't consume spicy and fried foods. Drink a glass of milk before your meals and try skipping dinner; if the burns in your chest continue, ask your doctor for a medication you can use during pregnancy.

As your pregnancy progresses climbing a few stairs will make you feel more and more tired. You can experience breathlessness that gets worse every day and the symptom culminates when you get into labor. Pray that your delivery date comes sooner, there's not much you can do.

The fear of soon giving birth and the physical discomfort can both lead to insomnia during pregnancy. Try to exercise more, drink a glass of worm milk in the evening and sleep with more pillows.

During the last half of pregnancy your body starts to prepare for labor and irregular contractions called Braxton-Hicks appear. Although contractions can often be painful and create uncomforting try to prepare for labor and remind yourself pregnancy won't last forever.

How to Read a Knitting Pattern

Knitting patterns are, for the most part, pretty straightforward. This article is designed to break down and define each section of a knitting pattern so you'll know what information to expect in what section. Not all patterns follow these guidelines, but most do.

Usually the page will start off with a title and photo of the finished product. These are standard and self explanatory. Now on to the juicy stuff:

Skill Level

Easy, Medium, Hard or Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced are examples of the information listed here. A quick glance here is how to tell if a pattern is within your skill level.

Here are a few examples of what kind of projects you might find in each skill level:

Easy/Beginner

You'll probably find a lot of scarves here, as well as potholders, place mats, handbags, some afghans and even a few sweaters.

Medium/Intermediate

Stocking caps, cable knitted scarves and sweaters, afghans with alternating stitch patterns and most knitted tops fall under this skill level.

Hard/Advanced

Generally, if an item has a very intricate stitch pattern, it's likely to be in the Hard category. Knitting pictures and designs would definitely be a more advanced undertaking, as would any type of knitting that requires a lot of shaping.

Sizes, Finished Measurements

Generally the main size is listed in normal font with all other sizes in parentheses. Example: S(M, L). When you read the knitting instructions further down in the pattern, the first set will apply to the main size, with adjusted instructions for other sizes in parentheses. Also in this section you should see total finished measurements for this project.

Materials

Any thorough pattern will list in detail what materials you'll need to complete the project.

-Yarn: Since yarn weights vary by type, look for patterns listing yarn in length, that way you can substitute a yarn and still know how much to get.

-Needle Size: You should find information on the needles and needle sizes used to complete this pattern.

-Miscellaneous Supplies: If you need stitch markers, cable needles or any other miscellaneous supplies, the pattern should list these here as well.

Gauge

The gauge section should read something like this: 10 sts + 10 rows = 4" in Stockinette. This information is what you'll use to check your gauge [http://touchofavalon.blogspot.com/2007/10/checking-your-knitting-gauge.html].

Pattern

This is where the actual knitting begins. The pattern tells you what stitches to use in what sequence to create the project named at the top of the page. A complete pattern will also include a list of the abbreviations used, but in some cases, it's assumed everyone knows what those abbreviations mean. Even advanced knitters have trouble with this sometimes.

Some Important Points to Remember

When following any pattern, it is imperative that you:

-Test your gauge before starting. There's nothing worse than getting an hour into a project to find it's 6 inches too narrow because your yarn is a smaller weight than the pattern calls for.
-Buy all the yarn for the project at the same time. Dyed yarns have "dye lots" and it's important to get all of your yarn for one project from the same dye lot. If you don't, you have a good chance of getting different shades of the same color throughout your knitting.

-Take a break if you're frustrated, as you're sure to be at some point. Knitting is a fun and relaxing hobby, don't let it turn into a chore to get that afghan or poncho finished!
