A "How To" - Casting on Knitting Needles

Knitted garments are very attractive and comfortable to wear. Many people who are not familiar with knitting may be intimidated by the process of knitting or impatient because of the process. The key to making a successful piece is having a good start and this can be done very easily if you know how. If you are able to start successfully you will see that the process if very easy because of its repetition. Many people find that knitting is relaxing because it is repetitive and because of the knowledge that some things are worth the amount of time put into them.

So, the first step is to start and this is called Casting On. This can be done with any kind of yarn and any gauge needle.

Step One: Unwind the yarn from skein. Make a loop and knot it. Make sure the looped knot is close to the end. This is your first cast-on and it is also the beginning of your garment. The purpose of the knot is to make sure your garment does not unravel. Make sure that the size of the loop is close to the size of your needle's gauge.

Step Two: Insert the needle into the loop. Depending on how many cast ons you have to do, place the first cast on towards the base of the needle. If it is two tight do not worry, it will adjust to the size of the needle.

Step Three: Take the yarn between your fingers and make a loop. Put it onto the needle so that it is locked into place. If the loop can be unraveled, it has been done incorrectly. Also, depending upon how tight you want your stitches to be, make sure that there is no excess amount of yarn in between your cast-ons.

Step Four: Look at how many cast ons your knitting pattern calls for and then repeat step three. When you are done casting on you can start knitting from your last cast on.

Types of Beads Used in Beading

If you are a first time beader, you would be amazed by the various types of beads available when you step into a bead store.

The many variety of beads would amaze you. There are seed beads, glass beads, plastic beads, crystal beads and more. You could even opt for the do-it yourself types whereby you design your own innovation on the beads itself.

Depending on the types of beads, you could pair them up to make creative and unique pieces. For example, if you are using seed beads, you can use them in embroidery or as spaces in between large beads. Alternatively you can use them on their own to make beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. As they are smaller in size, you would have to use quite a large number to make each piece. The color combination is another factor which you might wish to look at so that you get an eye catching jewelry piece.

Seed beads come in both glass and plastic material. For consistency and quality, it is best to use the Japanese made seed beads. They have many colors such as pastel, normal and metallic colors. Glass seed beads are especially versatile and should be an essential in a beader's toolbox.

Glass beads are great as they come alive when the light shines on them. They reflect the light and thus become enticing and glowing. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes such as barrel shaped, heart-shaped. There are also a number of finishes to it. Some are frosted and could be used as focal points in necklaces or bracelets.

Crystal beads are beads that have gained popularity. Some reputable brands such as Swarovski crystals beads are very popular among beaders. However do beware that these beads are brittle and thus do handle them with care as the slightest hit of your pliers on them might just chip one side off. These are popular in making earrings and necklaces as they shine and sparkle.

Parenting is a Twenty Four Hour a Day Job

Many people think of parenting as a job. If it is a job, then it is a job unlike any other. Most jobs require your presence from eight o'clock in the morning until five o'clock in the afternoon. Parenting as a job does not stop even if you get the kids to bed by eight o'clock.

Even if they are sound sleepers, and not many children are, you cannot leave the house without a babysitter. Many a parent has learned from the frequent times a child wakes up that they are on-call all through the night. This sometimes means changing children's sheets and pajamas, giving medicine and general comfort at any hour of the night. Fortunately most children begin as infants that wake up two or three times a night for feedings. By the time children have gotten around to the midnight awakenings only occasionally or when sick, parents feel grateful to have gotten what little sleep they feel they have.

You may be an accountant, a computer programmer or a construction worker by day but as a parent you are expected to take on so many more roles. You must feed your children. Since feeding extra mouths does not usually come cheap that usually requires cooking to do it economically. You will be your children's first teacher. You are the one to introduce your child to their colors, their shapes and their alphabet first. You must love, or at least be able to tolerate, cleaning up spills and crumbs, doing mountains of laundry and washing hands, faces and bottoms all day.

As the children get older you must assume roles of chauffeur and team booster for all the sports your children may become part of. You must become chief tutor when the homework is a bit hard. If your child develops a health problem you may feel like a nurse or medical assistant as you record observations of symptoms and administer medicines and treatments under the doctor's orders.

One of the biggest differences between a day job and parenting is you can quit the day job. At least you can switch day jobs. Once you become a parent, you are a parent for life. The demands on your time are greatest when your child is young. The tasks of the job evolve immensely as your child progresses through the school years and into the teenager years. Even when your children are fully grown and have left the house, you still feel deeply your role of being a parent. You love them and you hurt when they hurt. You are busting in pride for them in all their accomplishments. You ache for them if they have serious problems in their adult lives.

The good news is that parenting is a job with bonuses that you cannot acquire in any other way. In return for the years of love and care, they will love and care for you in return. Sure your children will frustrate you and cause you to cry tears of sorrow, but you will also have many days of shedding tears of joy and pride. Your family will be a part of you forever.

Various Infertility Cures to Consider

Infertility is the condition wherein a couple is not able to conceive. This can pose a big problem between married couples. The husband can be infertile if there is a problem with his sperm. This can either be lack of sperm or a problem with sperm motility. For the wife, she can have problems with ovulation, obstruction of the fallopian tubes, and hormonal defects. And there can be cases wherein these conditions do not exist between the married couple but they are still unable to conceive.

Because of the growing problem with infertility, many infertility cures were discovered and formulated. Conventional therapies for infertility are surgery and drugs.

Surgery. Performing reproductive surgery for men or women is an infertility treatment. Surgery is used in 85% to 90% of infertility cases. For men, a vasectomy reversal and varicocele repair may be performed as infertility cure. For women, it can be removal of fibroids or endometriosis implants.

Drugs. There are drugs used as cures for infertility. Some drugs were formulated to stimulate the production of eggs. Examples of these are Serophene, Clomid, Repronex, and Pergonal. Clomiphene is used as the first-line treatment for ovulation problems in women. Clomiphene was established to stimulate ovulation in 60% to 85% of infertile women. And around 30% to 40% usually becomes pregnant. The risk of taking drugs as infertility cure is the likelihood of producing more than one fetus.

Assisted reproductive technology. This is the newest technology in infertility treatment. Assisted reproductive technology is performed when all other treatments have been used and the couple still cannot conceive. Assisted reproductive technology procedures are in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, blastocyst culture, cryopreservation, and artificial hatching.

These are the different known infertility cures. But before a cure is done, certain risk factors for infertility are looked into. Some risk factors are stress, age, smoking, alcohol intake, drug use, and others.

3 Styles of Leadership, Parenting, Personhood - Only 1 That Works

This is something that not only works relating to leadership; it works in all facets of life where there's a reliance on relationships working and good rapport toward peace and equity outcomes. That probably covers the vast majority of situations we could find ourselves in, from buying milk at the corner delicatessen to heading up a major corporation.

The Human Synergistics' Circumplex explains all. The 12-faceted disc encompassing constructive, passive-defensive and aggressive-defensive leadership styles categorises leaders as either encouraging, requiring or driving individuals--regarding their preferred ways of managing people.

1.Style One - Passive/Defensive - "Requiring"

"Requiring" leaders are restrictive in that they seek their people to please the customer, conform to 'the mould,' clear all decisions through correct channels, and avoid mistakes to the point of inaction.

"Requiring" parents likewise will defer to others, pleasing them, to the potential expense of the child's best needs. They'll not take any risks i.e. little 'faith' is exercised, and this will frustrate their children. They'll also be overly inclined to blame their kids--in submitting to others--when managing their kids' inappropriate actions, not accepting any responsibility themselves.

"Requiring" people are people pleasers, bent to the shape of a world that would have them 'required' (extrinsically) to do things they don't believe in. These are the "submissives" of the world.

These are "lose/win" people. They lose so that others can win. They focus at being good.

2. Style Two - Aggressive/Defensive - "Driving"

"Driving" leaders are restrictive for basically the opposite reasons that "requiring" leaders are. They seek their people to: eliminate mistakes--highlighting them to them in their perfection; conform to 'their mould,' to the point of bullying; and, do things to gain a competitive edge--even if that means behaving inappropriately. They set unrealistic goals for their people based on narrowly-defined objectives. They win at almost all costs.

"Driving" parents likewise will implicitly compete with other parents by using their kids as 'superior pawns,' highlighting their own shallow 'superiority.' Again, this is to the expense of the child's best needs. They'll possibly take inordinate risks i.e. too much 'faith' is exercised, and this will embarrass their children.

They'll also not be very inclined to accept responsibility for managing their kids' inappropriate actions--for these parents, others "attack" their children wantonly. Their kids seemingly can do no wrong.

"Driving" people are generally overtly selfish, bent to the shape of their own egos, driving an agenda that starts and finishes with their own needs, to the detriment of others. These are the "aggressives" of the world.

These are "win/lose" people. They win, and in doing so at a competitive advantage, others can only lose. They focus at looking good.

3. Style Three - Constructive - "Encouraging"

"Encouraging" leaders are prescriptive, and in doing so, they guide and direct appropriately. They seek to encourage their people to: achieve appropriately; to grow, develop and enjoy their work; and, to treat all others in the team respectfully and be friendly and cooperative. They focus on giving and receiving constructive, balanced feedback.

"Encouraging" parents will actively nurture healthy, vibrant relationships with their kids. Other parents will feel quite relaxed that their kids are friends of those with encouraging parents. These parents issue a balanced 'faith' in their kids, encouraging them to achieve appropriately--they know when and how to push them. Unlike the former two parents, they'll be very inclined to accept responsibility for managing their kids' inappropriate actions.

"Encouraging" people are generally balanced and positive people, driving an agenda that starts and finishes with the collective needs of all. These are the "assertives" of the world.

These are "win/win" people. They search for outcomes where everyone comes out on top. They focus at doing good.

Conclusion

Do you focus on being good, looking good or doing good? The first two styles represent essentially a "faith disconnect," acknowledging that it takes a lot of courage, humility and self-honesty to be a consistently constructive leader, parent and person.

To finish, I was recently reminded of a poignant expression that gets at the heart of this issue: that of character; that deep, visceral "soulish" component to our inner person.

"What embitters the world is not excess of criticism, but an absence of self-criticism." -G.K. Chesterton.

The person, who routinely searches themselves in a healthy way, attending to the internal and external feedback they receive, will succeed as a leader, parent and person.

Three Recycled Halloween Decoration Ideas

Halloween is a time of year for decorating. When it comes to created decorations at home, it is possible to craft Halloween decorations from simple things you have lying around the house. These recycled Halloween decorations are fun for the entire family and bring the fright back to Halloween.

Make a Snowglobe

A Halloween Snowglobe can be created from an old glass jar, plastic bugs and small stones. To create this Halloween decoration, simply clean out the glass jar and dry. Fill the jar with Karo syrup and place the stones and plastic bugs in the jar. The top of the jar can be sealed in place with some silicone caulking to prevent the liquid from escaping. Once the caulk has dried and the rim of the jar is secure, the Halloween Snowglobe will be slimy and scary for all those who wish to shake it up.

Make a Spider

The egg carton is another easy source for recycled Halloween decorations. The egg carton spider can be crafted from one egg section. Simply cut out the egg cup and paint black. Attached chenille stems to the egg cup with glue for the legs and paint on white eyes. After punching a hole in the middle of the egg cup, fishing line can be used to string up the recycled Halloween decoration all over the home. If these decorations are the be hung outside, it is important to spray the entire spider with a waterproof clear spray paint to prevent damage from the weather. These spiders look wonderful when paired with artificial webs created from cotton batting.

Make a Bat

Another egg carton Halloween decoration is the egg carton bat. Instead of using just one egg cup, this bat requires three cups in a row. The two outer cups need to be cut down to resemble the wings of the bat. Paint and decorate the cups to look like a bat and string up using the same fishing line you used with the egg carton spider. For a twist, you can also paint on some red fangs to make the egg carton bats look even scarier.

Crafting recycled Halloween decorations is a budget friendly way to celebrate this scary holiday. Many decorations can be created from things you save from the trash. Other simple recycled Halloween decorations include light bulb witches and juice carton door stops. Kids can create all of these crafts with the help of an adult and some safety scissors.

What You Need to Know About Yeast Infection Among Infants - How Are Infants Affected?

Did you ever know about yeast infection among infants? Any baby is susceptible to this skin disorder that commonly occurs in the moist diaper area. This is most possible during child birth, because the infection may be transmitted from the mother who is infected with the yeast.

Infant infections are also sometimes caused when the mother fails to keep the female infant clean in her vaginal area. This skin condition is also sometimes caused due to insufficient cleanliness caused by bathing an infant. Typically, a baby infection generally starts out like a diaper rash, but it is not easy to fade away easily and will not heal away as a diaper rash.

What are the features?

Sometimes it is difficult to indicate the difference between an infant yeast infection and a diaper rash. Another of the most common forms of this condition is the oral thrush in the infant抯 mouth. It could occur on the folds of the skin of the diaper area which tends to remain moist every time and does not have much air flow. Infection of the cuticles may also develop if the baby tends to suck his thumb or fingers.

Different types:

One of the common types of this infection is the thrush. In this condition, sore white patches are to be seen in the infant抯 mouth. As it spreads through the infant抯 digestive tract, it could involve the diaper area and the mouth. If the diaper rash of the infant is indicative of a lot of pus-filled bumps or is in a pattern, you must have the doctor examine the infant抯 body.

What is the treatment available?

No matter how careful one can be, if an infection in an infant should occur, he is best treated by his paediatrician who will treat it in his own special methods. If the diaper area is affected, he will prescribe a special ointment and advise keeping away the diaper as much as possible to let the air flow freely in the affected area.

This skin condition almost certainly occurs due to a weakened immune system. A sick child is most prone to develop such an infection. Use of antibiotics will also kill essential healthy bacteria present in his body thereby making it susceptible to this skin disorder.

In case you have not dealt with this kind of a situation before, you must take the child to a specialist who will properly diagnose the problem. If the infant has recurring bouts of the infection, the doctor probably will suggest ways and means to prevent and combat its occurrence. If the child has a lot of pus-like bumps, his doctor will probably prescribe some anti fungal creams for its treatment.

Yeast infection among infants is common. When you face such a situation, it is best advised to have the doctor examine the affected part and treat it properly.

Rubber mulch is the buzz word taking the play area equipments market by a storm. Has anyone given a thought to the recycle waste rubber materials and obtained some of the useful products which would exactly fit the requirements of a play area? The impurities are removed and are superior to any form of available mulches. This procedure is called vulcanization.

So how good these mulches are?

æ˜'hey prevent the growth of weeds and pests in the play area.

æ—¾t does not permit the loss of nutrients from the ground soil.

æ˜'he variation in their color and appearance adds charms to the park and play grounds.

æ˜'he number of injuries sustained is drastically brought down as they act as cushion.

æ—¾t provides a strong footage for the athletes providing a firm grip.

昍esistant to natural elements like wind, rain and other forms of heat.

Learning and Teaching - Whose Jobs Are They Anyway?

I just read a newspaper article that discussed the difficulty parents have when helping their kids with their homework.燬ome communities are actually offering classes in the subjects their children are studying so that parents can supplement their kids' in-school learning at home.營 won't cite the article, because I think it missed the point.?/p>

This is my "OP / ED" page response: It is NOT the parents' job to be teaching their children the 3 R's.營f parents believe they must have a teaching degree to assure that their kids will be successful in school, I think they are mistaken.燚elivering subject matter and assessing mastery of that subject matter is best left to the experts who are trained and educated to be the teachers.牋
?br>However, there are things that parents can do in order to help their kids with school work.營f you've got a struggling student, here's some ideas to help him/her succeed in school:
?br>#1 Have a plan.燜ind out from the experts (their teachers) how they would like you to participate.營f their advice is to become a "tutor", ask for other suggestions for local resources.燤any communities have after-school programs that include tutoring.牋 Most schools expect their teachers to offer after-school assistance for struggling students.燗nd, there are a myriad of self-study programs and supportive internet resources to help kids sharpen their math and reading skills.燜ind out which your child's teacher recommends for your child.
?br>#2 Become your child's "coach"...not his/her teacher.燜rom the sidelines a sports coach cheers, suggests, prods, cajoles, and sometimes pleads for his/her player to perform maximally...(I repeat) from the sidelines.燭he coach does not jump into the game, take the ball and score for the home-team.燭hat's the player's job.
?br>Similarly (without the "pleading", I hope), a parent who coaches his/her child does it from the side-lines.燗n important part of the education process is to personally take action and res! ponsibil ity in learning.燜or that reason, wise parents makes sure their children have the tools they need to learn, knowing that it's up to the kids to do the learning.燗nd, support the process by offering encouragement and guidance about persistence, attention-to-detail, courage-to-try, and success-in-small-steps.
?br>#3 Create an environment and family activity structure for learning.燢ids can't learn when the TV distracts them.燭hey can't learn if they don't have the books or resources they need.燗nd, they won't learn if parents are unwilling to curb their children's natural instinct to goof-off.
?br>All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.燬o, it's important to schedule time for schoolwork and learning...and it's crucial to schedule time for play and "goofing off".燘y creating a specific schedule for both (and sticking to it), kids create a pattern of work and non-work and learn to focus according to the mode they are supposed to be in.
?br>#4 Establish a family culture about learning.營f children believe that television is the only information source (because that's where they see you get your information), they will think that learning by TV is the standard in your family.營f kids see you read the newspaper or books, they assume that reading is a valuable "norm" within your family.燗nd, if you instill the notion that summer vacation is an opportunity to avoid all learning your unintentionally equating school with learning (and the drudgery of school work with the undesirability of gaining knowledge and skills), you're setting the stage for a resistant learner.?br>?br>If you want your children to develop a life-long-love for learning, you would be wise to show enthusiasm when you learn something.燭his isn't just about "facts".燣earning how to play the piano, learning about geography via travel or reading about it, learning by exploring topics on the internet, learning how to make a movie or write a story--these are tools to expand a child's interest and awareness of his! /her abi lities and possibilities.?br>?br>#5 Explore and Learn with them.燜ind something you and your child are both interested in and read about it, surf the internet about it, don't be afraid to go on "side-trip-links" (maybe there is a related topic or issue that you'll find more interesting), find an expert to interview about it, find movies or TV programs about it and watch them together, create a project scrap book and collect articles, items or photos about what you've discovered.
?br>Stay involved and interested in what your child is learning about.燚o it together.燭alk about it.燤ake learning joint effort.?br>?br>A life-long love for learning seems to be an endangered species.燢ids often see school as a drudgery and waste of time because many don't value the subjects they learn or the way the subjects are taught.燳our encouragement and enthusiasm may be the only arrow-in-your-quiver to revive the wonder of learning and the excitement of gaining new skills and knowledge....just for the challenge.燗re you up for it?

Baby Costumes For A Halloween To Remember

While it's true that babies are too young to enjoy Trick-or-Treating, dressing them up in baby Halloween costumes is something that parents often can't resist. There are so many reasons to dress up a baby in a Halloween costume. But, the main thing is that there are Halloween costumes geared towards babies and all of them make the little ones look cute.

What are your motives for wanted to put baby Halloween costumes on your little ones? Do you want a cute picture to slip into your annual Christmas cards? Do you want to bring your little one along with you during Trick or Treat? Is your baby part of a play group that is having a costume party? Where the costume will be worn will often determine which costume to choose.

Finding Baby Halloween Costumes

You can find baby Halloween costumes in a variety of places. These include at online auction sites and in the classified, in department stores, costume shops, stores that specialize in baby clothing, and other places online. You can also borrow the costumes from people that you know and also make it yourself.

Baby Halloween Costumes Options

So, which baby Halloween costumes are appropriate for the little ones? Well, there are some adorable costumes designed to bring out a child's unique personality. You can find pumpkins, clowns, black cats, even little witches. Animals also make for cute costumes and so do character outfits. Does your child favor certain cartoon characters or toys? Consider dressing them in those outfits.

Professional Photographer

If you are dressing up your child for the sole purpose of taking pictures and including them in albums and Christmas cards, you may want to hire a professional photographer who specializes in children. They will help bring out their unique gifts and help make sure they are happy and captured well on film. You want your baby to look their best!

Costume Party

If the baby Halloween costumes are designed for a costume party, keep in mind that they should be durable and washable. They may smear food on their outfit and get it dirty. Unlike other events such as getting pictures taken or trick or treating, a costume party is long and filled with activities that can ruin a costume. Make sure you get one or make one that is built to last.

How to Get Your Desired Body After Birth of Baby

Your body after birth of baby is not yet prepared for an immediate weight loss program. You have to give yourself time to recover. But while you are doing this, you can already prep yourself up for that task ahead of you.

Step 1: Breastfeed your baby. Breastfeeding is one way to lose calories even when you are not spending hours in the gym. It can actually burn as much as 500 calories in one day. If your body is not yet gym-ready, you can burn calories this way.

Step 2: Slowly incorporate a healthier diet. You can immediately start on this after giving birth to your baby. Many experts advice new moms to cut back on some forms of carbohydrates first such as white bread, white rice and white pasta. These foods can actually trigger water retention. Excess fluid brought about by pregnancy will not be properly flushed out from the body. Replace these instead with whole grain bread, whole grain pasta and brown rice as these are loaded with fibers.

Step 3: Don't forget your protein and calcium. New moms need protein to have strength to go through the demands of motherhood. Calcium is also necessary in order to prevent the development of diseases such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis which are purported to start after pregnancy. Protein is essential in your meal so don't forget to include healthy proteins such as chicken meat and fish. Fish is even considered as a power food because it is loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids that are purported to help increase chances of losing weight for people who are obese or overweight.

Step 4: Drink lots of water. One glass of water before eating your meal and one glass of water after it will seal the deal. When you are eating smaller portions of food, you need the help of water to help keep you satisfied with what you have eaten. If you feel hungry but it is not yet time for snacks, you can always drink a glass of cold water as this increases metabolic activity.

Step 5: Once your body is ready, you can now try a physical fitness activity. Keep it as simple as you can. Why not go for something that will really interest you such as belly dancing, yoga class or even badminton? Those activities where you can interact with people who have similar weight loss goals can help you stick to your routine.

Your desired body after birth to your baby is achievable with these steps. Follow them and be able to see a load of difference.

Planning Christmas Gift for Your Man and Children

Men are often found saying it's very hard to choose a gift for a woman because there are so many things to choose from. What they don't know is that it's equally difficult to find a gift for a man, even more so. You keep thinking if I bought him a book, chances are it will never be taken out from the cupboard, let alone finish it. If I bought him a sweater, he might argue over the colors or the print, being either too childish or too girlish. Indeed it's very hard to satisfy a man!

Let's find out some ways you can surprise him this Christmas. We all know men love sports. You can buy some DVD's of his favorite game or a sports show. You can even get him a signed photograph of his most favorite player and have it framed. You can invite his friends over for dinner and tune some sports channel afterwards to let the guys have some quality time together.

A dinner for two is always the best gift anyone can ever get. If the man is your boss, you can buy him a couple of theatre passes or some other sports event that might be taking place nearby. A personalized Christmas card is a sweet gift for anyone. If he likes to read, you can buy him his favorite sports magazine. If he's not that much into sports, you can buy him his all-time favorite movies and watch a couple of them together on a romantic surprise dinner planned by you. Another idea is to have his room renovated the way he always wanted. Have it white-washed or bring in some new stuff for him to enjoy.

Christmas is happy time for all people, but for children it's the happiest time of the year. They get to receive gifts from everyone and they're jubilant. But before Christmas arrives, you often find yourself wondering what you should be buying this year for your children. There can be many ideas. The traditional toy-gifts are also an option, but children are so imaginative that they want to have something different each year. Why not surprise them with something new this Christmas?

You can take them out for a surprise dinner, go for a Christmas play somewhere, or take them ice skating. Plan a Christmas party, include games they have never played before and give them some hand-made beautiful items as winning gifts. You can also take out some old baby toys from the attic and renovate them to turn into decoration pieces for your child's room. They will be thrilled to have received such an item with which their childhood memories are associated.

Children like to dress up differently and perform an act they like the most. Buy them some cool outfit in which they can show their talents off to their friends. Watch some good movies together, and play some quiet family games in which small presents are awarded at each step to the winner. You can wrap them up in funky glittery wrapping papers. Include some learning games as well, for example trivia or some other computer game. The children are going to love them. Invite their friends over and give them some time to party around they way they like. This winter give your children the best time they have ever had so that they will never forget it!

10 Kid-Friendly Valentine Gift Ideas from the Heart

With February 14th just around the corner there抯 no better time than now to start thinking about creative ways to express your affection.

This Valentines Day take a few minutes out of your busy schedule and surprise your children with something that speaks volumes about how much they抮e loved.

All you need is a few supplies, a couple of different sized æ…¼eart?cookie cutters and lots of imagination.

Send a Secret Valentine

Cut a heart shape out of white construction paper. Write a message in white crayon. Then put the heart in an envelope along with a note explaining to your child that she needs to paint the valentine red for the words to appear. Go one step further and drop it in the mail.

Start Your Morning Off With Some æ' Love You?Toast

Instead of ordinary toast make French or 憈oaster?toast special by cutting the bread with a large cookie cutter. Top your bread 慼earts?with strawberry syrup or jam.

Make Heart-Shaped Sandwiches

Spread strawberry jam on one slice of bread then cut a heart shape out of a second slice. When you put the two slices together you have a beautiful red heart jam sandwich.

Pour a Secret Love Potion

Add a little cranberry juice or red food colouring to your children抯 apple juice and drop in some ice cubes made of the same liquid. Toss a few cinnamon hearts into each ice cube section before you put the mixture into the freezer. Or simply add a few cinnamon hearts to a bowl of apple sauce.

Hide æ' Love You?Coupons

Surprise your kids with heart-shaped coupons tucked under their pillow or under their dinner plates. Ideas could include: an impromptu tickle fest, an extra storybook reading, a back rub, a cookie baking session, a movie and some cuddle time on the couch etc.

Prepare Some æ…™ove?Pasta

Serve spaghetti noodles shaped into a big heart with a tomato sauce centre and heart-shaped garlic toast. Cut heart shapes out of several pieces of white bread. Spread on a little butter mixed with some garlic powder, Parmesan cheese and some dried Parsley. Broil until brown.

Make a Heart-Shaped Pizza

Creatively work your dough into a heart shape and top with pepperoni or salami hearts made from sandwich slices.

Hugs & Kisses (Hershey style)

Purchase a bag of Hershey Hugs and a bag of Hershey Kisses and go wild hiding them all over your home. Attach love notes or clues as to where more can be found.

Give a æ…˜rispie?Kiss

Mix up a batch of Rice Krispie squares but instead of using a pan, mould the rice cereal mixture with the aid of funnel coated with butter or margarine. Depending on the size of funnel used you should be able to make between six and twelve Rice Krispie kisses. To resemble a Hershey抯 Kiss, wrap in foil and insert a little note that sticks out a little from the top.

Serve Up Some Heart-Shaped Brownies

Make up your favorite brownie recipe but instead of cutting into small squares cut into hearts. Enjoy all the little leftover pieces yourself ?I won抰 tell.

Remember the most cherished gifts are usually the ones which are given from the heart not the pocketbook. Be creative and have fun. If nothing else, I hope the above suggestions have inspired some fun ideas of your own. Happy Valentines Day!

Buy Kids' Costumes

Where is the best place to buy kids costumes-even kids Halloween costumes-this time of year? The best place to buy kids costumes of any variety...whether Halloween or even a cute seasonal costume for your child's school Christmas or "winter" performance is online, not your local department, drug, or super store, and most certainly not the mall. The same goes for buying adult costumes as well. You just can't beat the convenience and selections of online costume providers.

Perhaps you've always just automatically believed kids costumes are something you only have to think or worry about when October starts to roll around. But you know? Kids love to dress up in their favorite movie character costumes or fantasy costumes pretty much year round, if they've got a really awesome looking costume to play in. Don't you remember ever not wanting to take your favorite Disney costume off when you were little? Maybe you had a Mickey or Minnie Mouse costume you loved so much your mother had to get after you to let her wash [or mend] it or to get you to take it off just to go to bed.

The funny thing about kids: they generally haven't changed much as far as having huge imaginations, and loving to pretend with their friends or siblings. And it's good to encourage their imaginations as much as possible-for good-to keep them thinking creatively.

Another thing about kids is they love to get gifts! Well...we all do...but kids especially seem to know how to gush with enthusiasm whenever they receive a gift-particularly if the gift is something they really love. So how about giving that special child or children in your life his or her favorite, authentic looking costume for either an upcoming birthday or Christmas [or other] holiday gift? Just imagine the look on that sweet, innocent face when they are completely surprised by a fantastic kids costume completely unexpected.

If you browse, choose, and order now, you'll have a good jumpstart on your holiday shopping, too. Ideas on buying kids costumes provided as a service by http://www.MoonCostumes.com

Gingerbread Men

Quick-picture the last gingerbread house you saw, in your mind. Now, without thinking about it, what was the season when you saw it? Chances are, it was Christmas-time. Few treats are as closely associated with Christmas as gingerbread, and rarely do we see it, any other time of the year-which is amazing, since your kids can't seem to get enough of it, when it's offered.

As well, we seem to have it embedded in our cultural consciousness that gingerbread is somehow inherently English and Victorian. But the history of gingerbread goes back much further than nineteenth century Europe.

The word ginger probably comes from an ancient Sanskrit word-"sringavera"-which means "horn-shaped root". All ginger comes from a rhizome we call ginger root, native to Asia, but grown extensively today in Jamaica.

In ancient China, it was used as a medicine. In ancient Rome, it was used as a spice-and was heavily taxed. Ginger first became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages, probably brought in by returning Crusaders. Originally used as a spicy delicacy, the Europeans soon discovered ginger's preservative properties, and began treating their meat with it, as a way of preservation and a way of disguising the meat's odor, as it aged. As ginger became more widely used, it became more expensive, and was one of the most precious spices traded in Medieval Europe.

By the fifteenth century, Europeans relied heavily on ginger and it was imported in large quantities, bringing prices down a bit. Europeans also began using ginger as a primary flavoring for cakes and breads. Most countries developed unique gingerbread recipes, which they showcased at the many gingerbread "fairs", popular throughout the continent.

Eventually, gingerbread-making became a highly respected profession in and of itself, completely distinct from other bakery professions. In Germany, England, and France, gingerbread bakers formed their own guilds, similar to unions, and were recognized by their respective governments.

Gingerbread cakes and cookies became associated with many holidays, and were baked into shapes relevant to special celebrations. The Germans became famous for their shaped ginger creations. Nuremberg became the unofficial ginger capital of Europe, where artisans from other crafts-wood-cutters, sculptors, etc.-fashioned elaborate molds used by gingerbread bakers to make beautiful delicacies.

When the Brothers Grimm published their collections of fairy tales, the witch's house in "Hansel & Gretel' was described as a house of candies and cakes, but German bakers began the tradition of crafting "Hexenhaeusle", or witches' houses, a tradition which led to the gingerbread houses we know today.

American gingerbread makes use of maple syrup and fewer spices in most recipes, lending a heavy sweetness not found in most European brands.

Enjoy all the gingerbread you can, this season. But remember, it's a wonderful confection that tastes just as good in July as in December.

Getting Through the Terrible Twos and Enjoying It!

I have always heard about the terrible twos. I don't remember anyone ever saying that it doesn't stop at two. I remember the baby times. The moment they are born is an amazing beyond words experience. To every mother their baby is the most beautiful being they have ever seen. You realize this is the person you will always love more than anything in the whole world.

The moment you take them home is over joying. It is the best time. You never want to put them down. Everything about them is perfect. Who knew that you could be completely content watching someone sleep for hours? It seems that the moment they look up at you with those little eyes, everything is right in the world.

Most mothers record every little moment in their baby's life. It all seems to go by so fast. I remember feeling like it was yesterday, when we brought this tiny bundle home. The next thing you know they are rolling over, then crawling. They go from eating nothing but liquids, to solid food. The first bite of real food they taste is so exciting. You record the face they make the first time solid food hits their tongue. It all truly seems to happen in such a short time.

It is a celebration the first time they crawl across the floor. It isn't just a joy for the mothers, but also for the baby. The first time they realize they can take off on their own the little face seems to light up. As soon as they seem to get the crawling down, it is time to take their hands. Daddy takes the little hands and leads them across the room to mommy. The little one is so excited. The next thing you know they take their first steps all on their own. Everyone is so happy. This is where it all starts to be more of a challenge.

They go from being this pink little bundle of joy to a bundle of energy. Once they can move they never slow down. Every minute is energetic. It is such a wonderful time for both parent and child. The first birthday is a huge celebration. The first bite of cake they eat is always an event. I remember both hands diving in, and then the face following. The first year flies by, and here we are at the second birthday.

To me it seemed like the moment the second birthday came the terrible twos set in. They are at a time when they are becoming more independent. They can get around on their own now. They want to do everything all at once. Although the twos were a little challenging, they weren't as bad as I thought they were going to be.

My terrible age seem to come at three. They are at the age where it is hard to understand that there are rules. It seems to be hard for them to see that we have to do everything at certain times. They want to play now, not later. Why do they have to eat their vegetables? It just doesn't make since to them. What is bedtime, that is just foreign to them. Why go to sleep if you aren't tired? For me nap time was over a little after age three.

Their minds are full of new things, and sometimes it can be overwhelming. Tantrums are frustrating for the parent, but I believe also for the child. They aren't quiet sure how to deal with anger yet. I remember sometimes not being listened to. When the tantrums came and nothing could seem to calm them down, I felt like I had done something wrong. Misbehavior somehow made me feel like I wasn't the best mom, like I should have done something different.

I think every mother tries everything to help with the good behavior. You can try everything, and sometimes it just doesn't seem to work. It can be frustrating for the child and the mother. The child has so many emotions and they aren't quite sure how to deal with them. No matter how hard or frustrating it gets, they are still the best thing that ever happened to you.

I know that there is a way to get through it. There are still wonderful times. Playing outside and letting them explore all the new things. Everyday is a new learning experience for them. It is amazing to watch them grow up everyday, tantrums and all.

Abdominal Cramping During Pregnancy

If you've just found out that you're pregnant, congratulations! This time is very exciting, yet a little overwhelming at the same time. We're feeling our body change for the first time, are trying to inform ourselves on pregnancy as much as possible, and we have a lot of questions in the beginning.

A common question that is asked by a pregnant woman, is whether or not abdominal cramping is common? The answer to that question is yes. What happens during pregnancy is that your uterus begins to grow larger in size, which feels like your lower abdomen is cramping. It starts to expand and slowing makes room for the baby.

So, if you're feeling abdominal cramping in your lower abdomen you have nothing to worry about. The only time you should suspect that something is wrong is if the pain is excruciating. From there, I would follow up with your OB/GYN at your next doctor's visit.

If you're curious to know what other symptoms of pregnancy are normal, continue reading below.

Missed period - You should have missed your first period if you're pregnant.

Tiredness - You may also notice that you're more tired than usual. Take a nap when this starts to affect you.

Nausea - Nausea or morning sickness is also common. If you start throwing up, or become nauseous feeling, that is common unfortunately.

Foods - You may have noticed that you are trying to avoid certain foods due to smell, or you are craving different foods you wouldn't normally be craving.

Heartburn - Heartburn is another common symptom during pregnancy, as well as indigestion.

Cramping - Abdominal cramping (as stated above), is another symptom.

Frequent urination - You may also be peeing more often than usual. This is due to the uterus pushing on the bladder.

Breasts - Your breasts may also be tender and swollen at this time.

As you can see, there are quite a few different symptoms you may be experiencing. Although, they are all common, and so is the abdominal cramping. For more information, follow up with a doctor to discuss what you're feeling in particular.

Our Righteousness is Killing Us

I was privileged to be part of a Sexuality Education Advocacy Training in Washington DC last March, developed by three faith groups. We came together from all over the country to be a religious voice for comprehensive sexuality education.

Sexuality education is a moral issue, and religious communities and organizations come down with varying degrees of tolerance. A loud and heavily government-funded (over $1.5 billion over the last two decades) religious voice has proclaimed that the only acceptable teachings are abstinence-only until marriage. This same voice makes wildly inaccurate claims about comprehensive sexuality education, scaring otherwise intelligent adults into withholding information from our youth-and that is killing people.

Aside from the fact that our government has funded groups to teach our children that HIV can be spread through tears and that condoms have a 30% failure rate (Texas Freedom Network), the most disturbing data is that this approach doesn't work to reduce teen pregnancy or delay first intercourse. Abstinence education, coupled with the knowledge of how to stay safe from pregnancy and disease, is what comprehensive sexuality education is all about. Scientific and unbiased research shows clearly that comprehensive education around sexuality is more effective in delaying first intercourse and in protecting young people from both pregnancy and disease when they do become sexually active [Journal of Adolescent Health 42.4 (March 2008)].

Still, organizations like the Institute for Religion and Democracy criticize organizations like the United Church of Christ, which supports comprehensive sexuality education in its faith communities, as part of social justice ministries. And sexuality education is a social justice issue, when over one million people in our country and over 30 million people in our world are living with HIV/AIDS and two million of them died of AIDS in 2007 alone. In addition, according to the Center for Disease Control, there are the one in four teen girls age 14-19 who suffer from any number of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), with the statistic jumping to one in two for African American girls . By turning their backs on effective education, our churches are failing to care for the sick and love our neighbors as ourselves.

We also need to recognize that abstinence-only until marriage education excludes and condemns the 70% of our teens who are sexually active prior to age 19 (Guttmacher Institute) and the percentage of our population who identify as sexual minorities. These programs put up moral road blocks to providing all people information they need to save their lives-to protect themselves and others from STIs that can cause permanent damage and death if not detected and treated early on. Quite literally, we are killing people through a sin of omission of information.

I am fond of saying that I'd rather be effective than right. Being afraid of giving information and education in order for young people to make informed decisions discounts their intelligence and is akin to a governmental "need to know" mentality. Along with medically and scientifically accurate education, it is still possible to pass on your values as a parent to your children, as a youth director to young people, as a pastor to your congregation. It's time we stop arguing about who is right and start standing together for the moral work of saving lives through education.

Caring For and Knowing Your Gardening Tools

Caring for your gardening tools is important to ensure that they last for many years. Quality tools, though designed to last many years, must be cared for and maintained. Maintaining your garden equipment on a regular basis ensures that they will be ready to go to work on your next garden chore. There are things you can do to ensure that your garden equipment will last. ?br>?br>One, you must always remove all of the soil from your digging equipment after each use. You can either hose it down, or use a screwdriver to remove the dried mud.
?br>During garden season, you should also rub linseed oil into your wooden handles to help preserve your gardening tools. After using your equipment, you can wipe the metal parts of pruners and shears with an oily rag. You can also wipe your equipment dry with a clean rag, and then spray lightly with a penetrating oil.
?br>You should also sharpen your cutting equipment as well as the blades of shovels and spades during the gardening season. You can use a hone or whetstone to sharpen your equipment. You should also use a file to remove nicks and smooth the edge of shovels and trowels. Equipment that has been used for chemical applications should be thoroughly clean. Fertilizers and other chemicals can rapidly corrode any metal parts. To further prevent rust, you can fill a 5-gallon bucket with builder's sand and pour a quart of new motor oil over it. You can use this as a shovel cleaner every time you put your gardening tools away. You can put your equipment into the oily sand several times. ?br>?br>Taking care of your garden equipment is important. Choosing the right tool for the job that you are going to do in your garden is equally important. There are different types of garden equipment around. Each of this has their uses. A round point shovel, for example, is the most versatile and widely used type of shovel. You can use this to dig, scoop, or shovel dirt from one point to another.
?br>Then there is also the garden shovel, which has the same general d! esign as a round point shovel. This is smaller and lighter and is used for lighter. There are also other types of shovels. There is the irrigation shovel, the square point shovel, scoop shovel and the transplanting spade. Then, there is the D-handle shovel, which are used for shorter and close up work and quick jobs.
?br>Another group of gardening tools is the forks. There are also different types of these forks like barn forks and spading forks. Then there are also the hoes. There is the garden hoe, scuffle hoe, weeding hoe and warren hoe. There are still many types of tools available, rakes, shears, trowel, weeder, wheelbarrow, pick and mattock, and the pruning saw. You need to take care of all of the tools that you have and make sure that you know what they are for.?/p>

Ideas on Choosing the Best Infant Halloween Costume This Season

When you are looking for infant Halloween costumes as a parent you will find this a very fun time. If your baby is a new arrival it is more than likely you are very excited when it comes to dressing them up for their first night of trick-or-treating. Although your infant may not remember the event, you will be able to capture it by taking pictures and video that they can look at when they get older.

There are lots of baby Halloween costumes to choose from today, and even though it might seem like its a simple matter to pick a cute one (assuming it is the right size), there are also other things you'll need to think about so that both you and your child will have fun on Halloween.

In this baby Halloween costumes guide, you will find some great tips to help you choose the right costume for your infant.

The first thing you should think about when it comes to infants Halloween costumes is how heavy the material is. In general, very small babies are best in light materials rather than heavy ones. If it is a little cool outside, you can add a blanket or jacket that fits over the costume for warmth.

By layering in this way, you can add or subtract clothing if your child becomes uncomfortable because he or she is too warm or too cold. Lightweight fabrics that are suitable for babies include cotton and polyester. In addition to choosing a lightweight fabric, you should also choose a fabric that's breathable.

Babies need air to be able to circulate freely so that they don't become too hot. The costume itself should also not be irritating to your childs skin.

There are lots of infants Halloween costumes on the market, but not all of them are suitable; make sure the costume you choose doesn't restrict your child's range of mobility. After all, your little one may be at a stage in his or her life when rolling or crawling is part of important developments.

If they are placed inside a decorative costume that restricts their ability to move freely, it is quite likely that they will be uncomfortable and very unhappy. You should make certain that the outfit allows them to move in the ways that they typically move.

Finally, make sure the costume you choose will allow for easy diaper changes when needed. If all these suggestions, choosing among the many cute infants Halloween costumes on the market will be very easy for you.

Discipline But Be Loving

Listening, learning, and observing your children are very effective ways of getting them to open up to you when disciplinary action is require to getting your child attention. Giving your child your undivided attention by listening is the first thing you should consider doing when things become tensed; lending hearing ears helps makes disciplining become less painful for yourself and your child. Your child or children need to vent to release the tension 揵uild-up?they are experiencing themselves after a hard day at school. Every child has their side of the story of what took place whether at home or at school. By lending hearing ears you give the opportunity to analyze the situation at hand. Give your child ten to fifteen minutes to explain their side of story. This way you will learn exactly what took place after hearing what your child has shared with you. Most parents blast their children and give orders and strict disciplinary actions without getting all the details of the incidents that has taken place in their child lives.

By listening and learning about how they抮e day went, you can now observe and get a clearer picture of the episodes of the day your child is sharing with you. The more your children share with you the easier your job will be when deciding what method of discipline you choose to use. Discipline means 搕o teach and to train?let your children learn from their own mistakes. However you have to be willing to teach and train your child so they will not make the same mistakes over and over again. Your child will see you as being fair and loving while providing stern but loving actions to help strengthen their character and development. Disciplining your child is a must; however make sure you do it in a loving way. I抳e experienced this type of disciplining and it helps me as a single-parent to keep my child on the right track when she loses focus. Use whatever disciplinary action you feel will be most beneficial for you and your family.

By doing so; your child will always come and let you know how they抮e day went and share with you everything they really want and need to talk about. Open your eyes and your ears to hear from your child; this way you will be able to give correction and proper guidance. Your children are here to bring you joy. Enjoy your child or children and always be open to their 搘ell-being.? Your child or children are an asset to you and not a liability. Look, Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of your womb is a reward. Psalm 127:3. If you are struggling with your parental rights and responsibilities sign-up to receive tips on life in general and I can help you with your parenting concerns.

Beat the Christmas Rush

Christmas time is getting close and the North Pole has shifted into high gear. The elves are pushing out toys at full steam, the reindeer are working out in the reindeer gym to get ready for the trip, and the North Pole Post Office is stuffed with each child's Santa letter that needs to be sent out. The children can't go without the letters from Santa. The North Pole is in a state of complete pandemonium. You household could be in that same shape if you don't plan ahead a bit to avoid the Christmas rush.

Prior Proper Planning Prevent Poor Performance. That is very true. Christmas never "sneaks up" on anybody. It's the same day every year so just plan for it and you will avoid those headaches you get from waiting till the last minute. Christmas cards and letters are an obvious place to start. By the end of October you already know who you will be sending cards to. Of course it is too early to send them but not too early to address them and even sign them. Many families include a little form letter giving an update on what the family has been up to. Those can be added when you mail them to make sure they are up to date, but the family pictures can be ordered and ready to go in with the letter.

Gifts are a little like the cards in that you should get as much done early as you can. Now the after Christmas sales are too early to do much Christmas shopping for the next year, but sometimes you can get a lot of stocking stuffers that you know you'll use. Go ahead and get those candy canes, they'll be fine in a year and they are 80% off. Little things that find their way into stockings are good too. Your next shopping time would be at the end of winter. You really can't by clothes for the kids (you'll never know how big they'll get) but you can get winter socks, scarves and such for the kids and winter classics for adults.

Now you have the rest of the year to pick up things as you go. When someone says "I'd love one of those for Christmas" go ahead and pick one up before you forget about it later. And things go on sale all year so pick things up if you were going to use it as a gift in a few months anyway. Then there is the internet which is like the world's largest mall. Order early though because you will want to have all the ones you already have wrapped by Thanksgiving. Wrapping is not too bad when you do a little at time.

Last is your baking and candies. Instead of doing it a little at a time, try to do it all at once. That alone will save you time from cleaning the kitchen several times. It also lets you make extras to give all the folk that you really don't buy presents for but still want to give them a little some in the spirit of the holiday season.

Planning ahead and trying to do as much as you can as you can early will help cut down on the holiday stress. Don't worry about missing all the festive holiday crowds, the last minute shopping will give you your fill without driving you to sleepless night and worry lines.
