Caring For Roses

It is rumored that roses are difficult to grow. As a result, gardeners may shy away from attempting to grow these beautiful, fragrant flowers. However, if you take the time to learn how to care for roses, growing them is surprisingly easy and your results should last for years to come. Aside from adequate sunshine, the three major considerations when growing roses is water, nutrition and pruning. Learning what roses require of each is the key to caring for roses.

Perhaps the biggest consideration when growing roses is water. Roses require about one inch of water each week. A rose plant's roots run deep into the ground. By running deep, the roots can access water even when the soil surface may be dry. If the rose does not get enough water, the roots trend to run shallow in the soil, making them susceptible in times of drought and dry spells. Be sure to deep water your roses to encourage the roots to grow deep.

Like water, roses need good nutritious soil. Roses grow best where organisms living in the soil produce the nutrients. While man-made fertilizers can interfere with the organism balance in the soil, organic fertilizers can give the organisms a boost. Fungus and helpful bacteria in the organic fertilizers break down the organic matter, making the soil fertile for a long time. It is tempting to add man-made fertilizers, however, these fertilizers can upset the balance of the soil's organisms. When there is a decrease in organisms producing nutrients in the soil, the rose plant can then become dependent on the man-made fertilizer for its nutrient needs. If you choose to use a man-made fertilizer, it is best to use a slow release variety. The most effective formulas for roses are 5-10-5 or 4-8-4.

Regardless of which fertilizer you choose, the best time of year to fertilize your roses is in the early spring when the plants are starting to wake up from their dormant state as they get ready for a new season. You can also fertilize when the blooms are over and the rose plants begin to store energy for the next season. Stop fertilizing about six weeks before the first frost.

The third element of rose care is pruning. As with fertilizing, pruning is best done in the early spring as the plant comes out of its dormant period. Cut out diseased, dead or broken branches. Pruning is necessary for air to circulate in and around the plant. Pruning is also necessary to shape the plant. Cutting the rose plant's dead blooms encourages more growth. Pruning the buds of a young plant will help strengthen and establish the plant.

Beautiful roses require a few basics. If you give your rose plants adequate water, good nutritious soil, and regular pruning, your roses should reward you with unending beauty, year after year.

Gender Picking - How to Choose Your Baby's Sex Naturally

You should be able to choose the gender of your baby. You should have a say in the sex of your child and be able to get the baby that you want. With all of these modern technologies that we have in our world now, that is made possible.

However, there are some methods of gender picking that you might want to stay away from. There are plenty of scientific and medical procedures that can give you the results that you want, but they may come at a few costs. For example, these procedures can be very expensive and not too many people can afford them. Most importantly, some of these procedures can actually do some serious damage to not only your health, but to the health of your child. You need some better options when it comes to gender picking.

Thankfully, you can choose the sex of your baby naturally and with little to no side effects. A great way to make this happen is to change your diet. The foods and nutrients that you bring into your body can have a great impact on the development of your child. If you want to have a baby boy, then you should eat foods that will promote the growth of a male. Stick to a diet strict in alkaline-based foods such as tofu and pumpkin and this will help you to conceive a boy.

When wanting to conceive a girl, you should eat acidic foods such as red meat and fruits. You can also begin gender picking by having sex at a certain time of day. If you want to have a girl, then get your partner to come home in the afternoon and make love then. Your body is at the right temperature for the possibility to have a girl and you need to make that happen now.

These are just some tips that can help you to get the gender that you want.

Quinceanera Invitations

Do you want your quinceanera invitations with or without your photo? Many quinceaneras even put their dresses on and take their picture for the invitations. Many quinceaneras don't want to show the dress before the actual sweet 15 party. I have seen invitations with the pictures of the chambelanes, of course, these are home made invitations. This looks cool, it takes more work, but is not impossible.

The traditional verse for your invitations:

El Sr. Jorge Rojas y Maria Rojas tienen el honor de invitarlo a Usted y a su Apreciable familia a la celebracion de los Quince A駉s de su hija, Carla Rojas.

Este 4 de julio del 2010 a las cuatro de la tarde en la iglesia "Nuestra Sra. de Los Caminos"
123 Main St., Greensboro, SC
Recepcion a las 6:00 p.m. en el salon "Magnolia Hallroom"
1254 spring garden st, Greensboro, SC

This is the most used verse for your quinceanera invitations . So another question that girls have is, Do we put the two last names? Many quinceaneras just put one, but it is up to you and your parents. On some invitations even the last name is left out, so basically anything goes.

Always double check the wording of your quinceanera invitations.燬ometimes the error is in your own name, and you don't even see it.?If possible write the wording in a sheet of paper and double check it, also give the paper to someone else to also double check it.?Make sure you take your time to write the info of your invitation with a writing that other people will understand.?If you have a ugly writing, give it to somebody else.燗lso, a good rule of thumb for ordering your quinceanera invitations is that you have to make the order with at least 2 months in advance. Sometimes things go wrong, and as I have said before, time is only your friend.

Technical Bits of Quilting - What You Must Know

When you have selected the project you need to start on, whether or not it is bold or easy and have chosen the fabrics you would like to use, you want to know some of the technical terms used.

The word quilting is essentially the term used to glue the layers together and these follow a pattern and are awfully augmenting. These layers are called the top, batting and backing. Quilting can be done by hand or machine, either way you can produce beautiful creations.

There are lots of tools to help make quilting simpler and more pleasurable and it is crucial to have the suitable tool for your project. Like templates, pins, rings, frames, markers and cutters and so on.

Having the right hand stitching needle will have a massive effect on finished project. It actually depends on what is right for you. Rotary cutters as an example will save everyone a lot of time and everyone knows how time gets away on us.

Choosing the proper threads is mandatory as they may impact on your finished quilt. Employ a top quality thread ideally 100% cotton, that may guarantee there isn't any breakage. If you've a coloured quilt then you would best employ a grey thread so it is really faint, unless you are experienced thus you may use colors to match. Cotton thread does have an inclination to fray so using short lengths tying knots at the ends is an excellent idea.

These are some technical bits for you to learn:

Applique is the term used to stitch tiny pieces onto a background.
Basting are the long stitches used to hold the layers or seams in place briefly and are removed when the stitching is complete.
Safety pins can be employed for this reason too.
Batting is the layer in the middle of the quilt.
Bearding is the term used when the fibers from the batting is coming through the quilt.
Bias is the crosswise direction across the surface of the material.
Binding is the straight-grain of material which is generally folded and covers the raw edges of the quilt.
Border is the strip of fabric used to border the quilt. Fusibles are dissimilar types of webs or interfacings that are ironed on to the material for doing applique.
Grains are the lengthwise and crosswise threads.
Loft is the name for the thickness, height and resilience of the batting.
Mitered corners are the corners that are stitched onto the borders at a forty five degree angle.
Patch is term used for a piece that is joined to others to make a block.
Seam allowance is the size of material left after the pieces have been stitched together, often 1/4 in.
Raw edge is the coarse edge of a piece of material or block.
Selvage is the outside edge of the fabric.
Setting is the assembly of the completed blocks.
Templates are shapes used to make patterns for applique.

These are only a few of the technical bits to learn, so make sure to analyze these and more to make an excellent quilt.

Surviving Your Baby's Eighth Month - Things You Ought to Know

Big changes are coming in your baby's eighth month of life. By now, he or she has made a lot of big changes. They are moving around, making noises, and exploring everything with their mouth. What's more, they can recognize you and really take in their surroundings, since their vision is working at its best. So, get ready to start chasing after that baby.

Since Junior is crawling around, you have to keep a good eye on him. When baby's crawl, they encounter new objects. This could mean they'll find things you don't want them to get into. And everything they find is going to be put straight into their mouth, which is not always what you want to happen. Small, sharp objects can be dangerous, so just keep an eye out.

Also, since your infant is mobile, corners and other rough objects may hurt them. This doesn't mean you have to pad every corner in your house; your child won't break if they bump into a table leg. However, be prepared to comfort your child if that happens. Be happy so they don't feel like they have to cry. And do baby-proof some things, like electrical sockets, for instance.

By now, your child is probably also teething. This process happens between six and twelve months of age. If you see your baby drooling a lot or crying for no reason, this may be a sign of teething. Plus, when excess saliva is present, it can cause a rash or diarrhea. When you start to see these signs, it's time to help your baby out. Cold, hard teething rings can help numb the pain; if your doctor okays it, you can also try acetaminophen.

Another fun thing to deal with is your baby's growing personality. He or she is probably starting to make certain gestures or sounds for specific wants or needs, like raising his arms when he wants picked up. However, he or she might also act up a bit when you are around. By this age, babies start to test their limits. Since they know you always take care of them, they'll start this process with you. So, if you feel like the babysitter does a better job of calming your kid down, that's perfectly normal. Children are less likely to act up around less familiar faces.

These phases of acting up and teething will pass. You may not enjoy it at the time, but you'll look back on the memories fondly.

Repairing a Broken Piece of Glass

Here is a scratch or the start of a break. It might have been caused by excess heat or a flaw in the glass. It's been circled with pen so you can see it more readily.

To replace the piece, we start by scoring the piece to be replaced many times. First one direction, and then the other.

Then I tap from the bottom to loosen the pieces of glass. Notice that I place a garbage can below the repair to catch the debris and save myself some clean up.

I continue to tap until several pieces of glass are ready to pop out. I don't want to be too aggressive at this stage because I don't want to create pressure against the surrounding pieces of glass, or they might break.

Now I heat up a soldering iron and begin to heat the old joint, melting the solder and allowing it to drip into the garbage below. I usually flux the area needed to be melted just to encourage the solder to melt more readily. I try to direct more heat onto the side of the joint that I'm replacing to reduce the likelihood of breaking the neighboring pieces of glass.

After I melt as much of the solder away as I can, I flip the panel over and melt the other side the same way. (See the ball of solder resting on an adjoining piece of glass, that could create a hot spot and break the glass, so avoid that condition).

Now that most of the solder is removed and only copper foil is left to hold the pieces in the window, I begin to gently break and remove the pieces. I use great care not to damage the foil any more than necessary because if I don't damage the foil on the adjoining pieces, I can reuse it and save myself some work.

Once all the pieces of glass are removed, I grip the unwanted foil that encased the removed piece of glass with pliers. Pulling gently on the foil at all times, I work the soldering iron around the entire piece, allowing the old solder to melt and release the unwanted foil from the surrounding foil.

When I'm done, I have a pretty clean opening. If any of the foil is damaged, I clean the area and replace it.

If this is an art glass piece you may need to create a pattern piece by placing poster board or paper under the opening and tracing it. Then cut out new glass as you normally would.

Now I set the new piece of glass in place. See the small piece of pink glass in the center, that's to keep the new piece of glass at the same height as the rest of the panel. (You can use any color of glass as a shim!)

With the glass in place, I'm ready to flux and solder.

I touch the iron to a place where the pieces line up perfectly and lightly tack them. Then I can rock the other side gently until it lines up perfectly. I do this just often enough to get the piece in place and lined up with the surrounding pieces.

Once the new piece is tacked in place, I remove the shim to keep it from creating unwanted pressure points. Now I solder the piece back in place. I keep my iron at a lower heat setting and quickly span the air gap with melted solder. After I have the gap filled, I don't have to be as careful with the extra heat, because the solder won't be as easy to run through to the other side. (When the gap is so large that solder runs through, I will fill the gap with an extra piece of copper foil.)

Then I flip the window over and solder the other side.

Here, Jeanne cleans the window and dries it thoroughly, then applies a fresh coating of patina.

And it looks as good as new!

Traditional Halloween Makeup Tips

Yes it is that time of year again when we abandon our earthly forms and step into the surreal world of the underworld. This fascinating world has lured many to its shadows and Halloween is just an excuse for us to play out our Gothic fantasies. In the old days Halloween was indeed all about ghouls and goblins but now you can break away from all this and disguise yourself as a celebrity, a beautiful princess or a fairy. You do not have to be an ugly spirit or dead man walking to enjoy Halloween fantasies. However many people still love the old traditional underworld characters and spirit of Halloween. Here are some makeup tips to really look the part.

  1. Where would we be without the traditional corpse look? If you are holding a Halloween party or going to one you can certainly scare a few people with this disguise. In order to really look like a dead man walking you need to know how to apply corpse paint.
  • Apply base paint: This white base paint should make your complexion lighter but not become a mask like a cheerful clown. That is not the effect you want. Spooky pallor is the idea here.
  • Eye shadow: This should be dark blue, purple, or even black. Apply around your eyes from brow to lash. Do not forget to add some under the eyes, to really look the part!
  • Eyeliner: put a generous amount around the eyes. This will help to accentuate your eye shadow.
  • Lipstick: some people use black but if you really want to be a zombie you might consider purple.
Additional strategies: to keep the white base intact you can put a dusting of white powder over before applying the rest of your makeup.

Remember do not blend this make up use translucent powder between layers of base paint. Be careful what you are using you do not want to look like nothing on earth after the event due to allergies or eye reactions. Read directions carefully and test a small patch of skin if necessary.

  1. To really look scary you can dress up as a murder victim with fake wounds and blood! Here are a few tips for this.
Making non toxic blood:

  • Mix 3 parts of corn syrup to 1 part of water
  • Add red food coloring drop by drop until a realistic blood color is reached
  • Mix chocolate syrup as a thickener
  • Let stand in a warm atmosphere for around 10 minutes
  • Apply and see how scary you can be
To make this 'blood' come out of your mouth:

Take a big mouthful of the non toxic blood and let it trickle out of our mouth. Let it flow down your neck and onto your costume, to really look authentic. Remember to wear old clothes as it can stain light cloth.

Make a fake wound: You can draw these with a marker or really go to town with more a more realistic look. Just make an oval with a blue pen, next circle it with a red pen, then blend it a little to look natural. Draw some lines adjacent to the wound and rub them in to look like the wound is still fresh and bleeding. You can use some of your fake blood to really get nasty.

You can make variations on these 2 disguises and shock your friends with some Halloween fun. Enjoy!

I Am Healthy - Why Can I Not Get Pregnant?

How often have we heard of a situation where a woman has being trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant for years, adopts a child and then, surprise, surprise gets pregnant ? This is such a familiar story and one that is interesting to look at and get some insight into. It is as if the body suddenly realises that it is okay to relax and become pregnant now that there is a new baby on the scene.

Women often spend their early sexual years hoping desperately not to get pregnant. Their bodys' become used to that message, as it may well have been repeated over and over again. By the time they feel ready to start a family years may have elapsed as frequently, modern women are waiting until later in life to start families. Other factors, too, may also need to be considered.

I have worked therapeutically with many women who have been checked by their doctors and told that there are no physical reasons as to why they are not becoming pregnant. They come to see me to address any underlying emotional and/or psychological reasons that may well be behind this problem .

Some of the reasons that have been discovered in our work together are:

- what about my career ? Being afraid at losing seniority, status or competency in the workplace, because of maternity leave and child care issues.
- consequently, concerns at being seen in a different light by colleagues and also finding it daunting to face the fact that ones own priorities will no doubt change completely over night.
- finances. No matter how close to their partner, many women value their financial freedom and earning their own money. It is not unreasonable to have concerns at how their situation will be affected if a child is born. This is an area that needs to be addressed early on, to both partners satisfaction.
- independence. What happens if the relationship fails. This links in with career and finances.
- not wanting to share their partner. Some women really treasure the close bond that they have with their partner and feel a little jealous or apprehensive about the impact of a child.
- concerns about their body. Many women have worked hard to be smart, slim and attractive and are concerned that their body will change after a baby is born and their confidence will suffer as a result.
- will my partner still find me attractive ? Again, concerns about becoming a mother and carer for a child and the impact that will have on the dynamics of the relationship.

Many women are able to rationalise these fears and concerns in their heads. They have often discussed all of these matters with their partners and are in loving and stable relationships. However their unconscious minds are determined to protect them from being out of control of their situation. This is often a large part of the problem.

By using a combination of counselling and hypnotherapy many good results have been achieved in this field. This way of working allows the mind and body to find a positive solution and so, rationalise concerns to enable the desired outcome to be achieved. Sometimes couples counselling is a useful option, too, as it allows for open and frank discussion of fears and issues to be done in a supportive, neutral environment. This way both parties feel supported and understood, with any underlying concerns addressed and dealt with.

What Should You Do to Get Pregnant As Soon As Possible?

It is a fact that there are up to 15% of couples who are trying to get pregnant but end up with nothing. If you do not have any medical problems, then changing your diet may help improve your fertility as well.

Let's start with stop having any alcohol and caffeine. You should stop drinking morning coffee and change that cup into a large glass of mineral water instead. However, when you get pregnant, you need to stop having it anyway because it is said caffeine can be the cause of miscarriage, and your hormonal balance can be disturbed by alcohol as well.

If you are trying to get pregnant, then, it's time for you to clear your refrigerator from those convenience foods which are full of chemicals, and start having fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish. These are considered to be healthy foods. Besides, those nice biscuits, and cakes should not be taken as well because some researches mentioned that your chances to get pregnant can be reduced by up to 73% because of these foods.

As previously stated, you have to stop having caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, and start having fresh fruits, vegetables, and drink a lot of water. However, changing your diet alone is not enough. Changing your lifestyle may also help improving your chances of getting pregnant as well.

If you are trying to get pregnant, a multi vitamin and mineral supplement should be taken as well. These products can be easily found on the market. However, you need to learn more information in order to find out which product is most suitable for you. For example, vitamin B, zinc, and folic acid, along with an important fatty acid supplement are considered to be your good start.

Changing your diet as mentioned above may not ensure that you will get pregnant, but it is considered to be a right step to bring you in the right direction.

Five Items You Can Recycle and Use in Your Vegetable Garden

Vegetable gardeners were going green long before "green" went main stream. We have been recycling food waste for decades, storing up rain water in barrels to use when the weather runs dry and so many other things.

But now that the world has finally caught on with the green movement, it is time to pass along a list of items that many might overlook and consider trash, but really are great to use in the vegetable garden.

Cardboard Egg Cartons
If you buy your eggs in Styrofoam cartons then you have to switch to the cardboard carton variety. Cardboard egg cartons, besides being able to be recycled with regular cardboard, can be shredded and mixed in your compost bin and also make great plant seed starters. Simply cut small drainage holes in the bottom of each of the twelve cups, fill with potting soil, add your seeds and water. Once they germinate and you see about two inches of growth, cut the carton so that you separate the cups from one another and then plant the entire cup.

One Gallon Plastic Milk Containers
I can give you two uses for each before you send them to the recycle center. First, rinse the containers out to make sure all the milk residue is gone. Then fill to about an inch from the top with water, put the cap back on and stick the entire container in the freezer. In about a day you will have a nice solid block of ice you can use at your next barbecue to cool down those drinks. When the ice is ready, run some luke warm water on the outside so the ice inside detaches from the plastic sides. Take a utility knife and cut the container in half, in other words separating the top of the container from the bottom. This will allow you to remove the ice. Now take bottom half and drill some holes in the bottom and you have an excellent pot for flowers and plants and the top makes for a great protector against the cold air at night.

Reuse that Old Hose
Before you toss that old hose into the trash, create for yourself your very own soaker hose. Poke plenty of holes in the sides of the hose so that when you turn the water on it drips through the holes you just created.

Pantyhose, Old Socks and T-Shirts
Don't just toss them into the trash, you can use them to tie up your plants. Tomatoes have weak stems and instead of splurging on the Velcro ties you can cut up some old socks and t-shirts and use them instead.

Newspaper
Done reading the paper yet? Is your neighbor? Good! Newspaper makes a great weed barrier and also great mulch for the compost bin. To use as a weed barrier in your garden, lay the newspaper down, cover with grass clippings, and wet it down with your hose. To use in your compost bin, shred the newspaper and just throw it in there.

Trash is only trash if you can't think of anything to do with it. As more people get involved with the green movement, especially those that plant vegetable gardens, we will start finding even more ways to keep our garbage out of landfills.

Defining Proper Discipline

Even though the saying 'spare the rod and spoil the child' is true within the framework of discipline, it should never be taken to believe that it is okay to abuse the child in order to get him or her to obey. Physical forms of punishments must always be administered as a last resort and only when the parent is fully in control of their emotions. If you are dealing with anger due to something your child did that was wrong or disobedient, never allow yourself to take out that anger on the child in the name of discipline. That is nothing short of abuse.

One critical approach to consider before administering punishment is to talk to the child. Communication is vitally important in setting the stage for what level of discipline is appropriate in relation to the rule that was broken. Effective discipline starts and ends with communication. Whatever form of discipline is administered, first explaining why it has come to this and then afterward talking about it can go a long way in discouraging any further violation of the rules.

It is a given that parents generally do not look forward to having to punish their children for being disobedient. In a perfect world this would never have to be addressed. But, since we do not live in a perfect world and we all, from time to time break rules, there needs to be a set of rules in place with the consequences for violating those rules clearly spelled out. Again, the key is communication; when the child and the parent know ahead of time the consequences for the violation, there is a much greater chance that the discipline will be handed out firmly yet fairly, and without anger or potential for harm to the child. It will also go far instilling in the child not to repeat the violation.

There is a great difference between physical punishment and physical abuse. When the boundaries are clearly set and understood by all involved, abuse will have no chance of being a player in the disciplining of children. It will be the exception to the rule that physical discipline will need to be applied if communication is presented regarding the rules and what the consequences of breaking those rules are.

Every child has the right to expect a safe, loving environment in which to be raised. Parents need to constantly be on guard against becoming angry when their children break the rules and never, ever administer discipline when angry. The discipline must also be age appropriate. Never discipline a small child in the same manner that you would punish a child that is older. Punishment must always be age appropriate.

In conclusion, should you as a parent realize you have a problem with controlling your temper whenever the need for discipline is to be administered, take yourself out of the situation until you can calm down. If that is not working, you need to seek professional counseling for the sake and safety of your children.

Cloth Diapers - Using Cloth Diapers is an Easy Way to Save Money

Cloth diapers. The very words send fear through many a parents' heart - but a lot of what you think you know about cloth diapers is probably not true. Old-fashioned rubber pants, fiddling with diaper pins and leaky rectangles of cloth are usually what people have in mind when they think about cloth diapers. Oh, how the world of diapering has changed!

Of course, many of these myths about about cloth are perpetuated by the disposable diaper industry - after all, protecting their share of this billion dollar market is important to them. According to the Real Diaper Association, 18 billion disposable diapers are used in the US every year. At an average cost of 25 cents each, that is a lot of money and a lot of landfill space.

Here are some common myths about using "real diapers:"

* They leak! Any diaper that is not changed often enough will leak. However, modern diaper covers and pocket diapers (a diaper that holds an absorbent insert in a special pocket opening) make leaks a rare occurrence. In fact, most moms tell me that after switching to cloth they see far fewer leaks and "blowouts" than with disposables. Elastic is a good thing!

* They are hard to clean! Well, I spend about 30 seconds cleaning a dirty diaper since I use either a flushable diaper liner or a diaper sprayer attached to the toilet to rinse off any mess. Wet diapers go straight in the diaper pail until wash day. Modern fabrics are much easier to clean than the rubber pants of old!

* They are hard to wash! It takes me about 6 minutes, three times a week, to dump a load of diapers into the wash and run a cold rinse. I then run a hot wash and a cold rinse again. Ta da! Clean diapers. I never even have to touch them between the diaper pail and time to put them in the dryer. Thanks to the cool, new-fangled invention of the washing machine, washing diapers is a cinch!

* All that water, electricity and soap will cost as much as disposables! Seriously, this argument is weak at best. I use a special biodegradable, additive free detergent and it STILL only costs me 10 cents per load. Running three wash and dry cycles a week just does not make a noticable dent in our electric bill. If you are really worried about it, try using a high efficiency machine and line drying your diapers.

* You can't use them away from home. I use a simple zippered wet bag to keep used cloth diapers in our diaper bag until we get home. It's like camping, you simply pack out what you pack in. Now that my baby is on solids most of the time, I use a flushable liner when we go out. With a flushable liner, I can dump any mess in the toilet and I only have to deal with wet dipes when we get home.

See, cloth diapers are so much easier than you have probably been lead to believe! You can get started with cloth for a small investment to see if you like them and start saving your family money every week. I'll warn you though, a lot of parents are soon addicted to finding the cutest diapers for their babies!

Honey Beekeeping - What You Should Know

Honey bee keeping can be a rewarding personal experience, and you can even do it for commercial reasons. But first, you really need to have a good idea of what you are doing. Honey bees are not hostile to humans by nature, but they are highly sensitive and if you were to be stung by about 1,100 bees at the same time (which is possible in a beekeeper's setting) you would probably die - so, needless to say, you want to be fully educated before going headlong into beekeeping. Furthermore, you want your colonies to be successfully cultivated, meaning that they are healthy and productive.

The first thing you have to do is get yourself the right bees. This requires, first of all, knowing what you want to accomplish and what size bee colonies you want. Are you going to raise the bees for selling honey, or just eating it for yourself? Or, are you going to be serious about helping farmers and commercial gardeners fertilize their plants? After you have this taken care of, you should talk to other bee keepers in your area (if possible) and get an understanding of the right bees for the climate and your chosen purpose. There are many different sub-species of honey bees, so you have to be sure you're getting the ones suited to your location.

You have to know what kind of hive to build for your honey bees, too. This will, once again, depend on your location and climate, the type of honey bees you're keeping, and what your purposes are. People mainly use pine or cedar for the hive wood. It's important to keep in mind that cedar wood impacts the aroma of the honey, so if you're selling it for commercial reasons that may be a factor that you have to keep in mind. Your hives will be located in an open area that doesn't get strong winds, and within close range of fertile fields where the bees can gather nectar. If you use or anyone around you uses insecticides for protecting plants and flowers, you will have to do some research to make sure that they aren't known to be harmful to bees.

You'll have to do brood examinations once your hives are established to make sure that your colonies are thriving. When you open up a hive and move around the inner walls, you don't want to keep it open or manipulate it for more than 15 minutes at a time. Always move rather slowly and fluidly around the hives and open them with great care so that you don't jolt them and set off the anger of the bees. The honey bees will be okay up to that point, but beyond that they could get agitated and become aggressive, feeling that they need to defend themselves. Also be wary of the amount of honey and nectar in the combs. Robber bees might try to steal excess honey unless there is a lot of nectar, and if you notice this happening close up the hive immediately and don't open it again until at least the next day. If you have to do more hive-manipulating, use some kind of lighted smoker that gives off cool smoke to make the bees scatter temporarily and keep them at bay from you while you work. Allow a few minutes between first deploying the smoke in a hive and then opening it so the bees have time to get used to it.

These are some of the basic pieces of knowledge that you need for keeping honey bees. There's much more to learn but these tips are your foundation stone.

Pumpkins are a Favorite Fall Tradition

Pumpkins are a favorite part of fall. They are part of our history, myth, and folklore. They are used in many holiday recipes, and are nutritious as well. Pumpkins make wonderful decorations that welcome visitors to our homes. Pumpkins are so versatile they serve many purposes.

Thanksgiving in the New World is a time to give our thanks and to celebrate the season-of-plenty with feasts fit for a king. Thanksgiving tables are filled with the fruits of fall: apples, grapes, and pumpkin. There are many wonderful pumpkin recipes and treats besides the traditional pumpkin pie. There is pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin soup, and even pumpkin scones.

Halloween is a time when the folklore of the jack-o?lantern is brought to light. Eerie faces, happy faces, scary faces, and funny faces are carved into pumpkins and lit from within with candles. These jack-o?lanterns are set out to keep the ghosts of All Hallows?Eve on October 31st away. This tradition came from Ireland to North America. Jack made a deal with devil and then tricked him and so was denied entrance into heaven or hell. He was given an ember to light his way into eternal darkness. In Ireland this ember was carried in a carved out turnip on All Hallows?Eve. In America this turnip was replaced by our season-of-bounty fruit: the pumpkin.

Pumpkins also make great fall decorations. Pumpkins and gourds are gathered to show the signs of bounty in the fall and displayed on porches everywhere. Pumpkins can also be used as wonderful fall table decorations as well as cut and hallowed out to make beautiful sconces. A pineapple shaped pumpkin can be carved to look like a pineapple and lit from within as a sign of welcome for guests.

Pumpkins are classified as a fruit but they are commonly used as a vegetable in cooking. Whether you decide to try your hand at using fresh pumpkin for your recipes or buy canned pumpkin, you will not be disappointed with the result of pumpkin recipes. Choosing pumpkins for cooking is easy. Choose varieties such as New England Pie, Small Sugar, Mystic, or Baby Pam. The goal is to choose varieties that are heavy for their size therefor providing more flesh. These varieties are also much more flavorful than the typical varieties used for carving.

How to Conceive a Baby Boy - Simple Methods to Improve the Chances of Having a Son

For couples who already have daughters, many will wonder if it is possible to learn how to conceive a baby boy. Although gender selection techniques are often frowned about by many, there is no doubt whatsoever that parents who already have two or more children of the same sex, and who are wanting further children, would generally like a child of the opposite sex, even thought they may not admit to it!

For most though, this is nothing more than a passing thought and although there may be a deep-seated desire to improve the chances of having a son, nothing will be done apart from some "finger crossing" and possibly "praying".

However, what many people do not know is that there are some very simple things you can do right away to help you to conceive a son. Natural methods which are successful rely on using a multifaceted approach which uses all the scientific knowledge we have about the behavior of all the various elements involved in conception, such as the timing of intercourse, the behavior of the sperm and ovum, the diet of both partners - and the list goes on. By harnessing every bit of knowledge and putting it into practice both before and at the time of conception, some methods claim a success rate of up to 95%.

One method relies on understanding the differences between male and female sperm. Male sperm is smaller and faster than its female counterpart and does not live as long. By having intercourse as close to the time of ovulation as possible, you can ensure that the fast, male sperm will reach the newly released egg first. Using this method, it is important to ensure that you do not have intercourse before ovulation or the longer lasting female sperm will survive and be ready and waiting to fertilize the egg.

Another tip is to have intercourse using positions which favor deeper intercourse. Male sperm prefer an alkaline environment and as the area near to the cervix is alkaline this is naturally more supportive of male sperm.

HO Scale Model Trains Make a Great Hobby

HO scale model trains are so known that there are literally thousands of models made with various materials. Prices may be as cheap as fifty or a hundred dollars or they may range up to thousands of dollars, depending on quality, materials, and level of assembly needed. HO scale is the most popular for a number of reasons. Most important is their size allows model enthusiasts to build large and elaborate layouts in smaller areas than larger scale trains would allow. HO scale trains are literally half that of O scale trains, with H standing for half.

Trains in HO scale are 1:87, which means that they are 1/87 the size of a real train. G scale model trains are the largest of the model trains, and they are 1/24 the size of a real train. Z scale is the smallest at 1:220 with N scale half way in between HO and Z. Other popular scales include S and O. Another variation is narrow gauge where HOn3 means HO scale for 3 foot narrow gauge.

For those with the space, building a model railroad layout is a favorite pastime. It is an ongoing project that can be joy and satisfaction over a long period of time. From getting the layout up and running trains to building the scenary, a layout is never "finished". There is always some new detail to add. It is very important to due a lot of planning before starting a layout project. Since it will 'evolve' over time, it is a firm requirement to plan for the future development of the layout.

Model railroad collecting is a very popular hobby, with more and more people collecting model trains than ever before. People often consider model railroading and the collecting of model trains to be a very expensive hobby that only professional railroaders can participate in, this is certainly not true. Model railroad collecting was a popular pastime that peaked in the 60's and gradually crawled in the 90's. It can be said that there are less model train hobbyists today compared to its glory days. There are still those who are hooked to this particular activity. Scale train collecting is a hobby that can build many different qualities in its lovers.

Kids Develop Skills by Playing With Wooden Building Blocks

Wooden building blocks can promote learning and develop physical skills in young children. They are one of the oldest and simplest of all toys; carved from wood, in various shapes and painted different colors. Most of us remember these from our own childhood. Our parents, grandparents and many generations before that would also remember, fondly, the hours spent building with these toys.

Though wooden blocks toys are so simple, they are effective developmental tools for kids, even more effective than many of the high-tech electronic toys that seem to come and year after year. There are many ways these simple building blocks can shape and develop our children.

Building blocks challenge kids to build bigger, stronger structures and to be more creative. Kids can build great fortresses and bridges. These simple toys help kids to open their imaginations, where they travel to distant lands and we battled evil empires. Kids will build structures then tear them down, only to build them again. These toys help kids take ideas from our imagination and bring them into physical realities.

A child learns logic and reasoning. From simple activities of learning how to pile wooden blocks so they will not topple over to building color patterns a child is learning that they can manipulate the blocks. They use them as their tools and can make patterns and structures. A child can learn through trial and error what works. A child will sit for hours figuring out how to best build a fortress out of building blocks. While one piece may not work, they will keep trying until they have it as they want it. Only then, to tear it all down and begin again.

Kids can even learn negotiation playing with blocks. Many childcare centers and pre-schools and schools keep building blocks available for their students. As kids gather around to play with these blocks, they learn social skills and interaction. If a child wants blocks of a certain size or color, they learn to work with other children to get these. They also learn to work as a team and build things together. These are important learning skills for young children.

While we as adults may see wooden building blocks as simple toys, our children see them as tools of play. We may assume that they only teach them colors, shapes and the simple concept of gravity. In reality wooden blocks stretch the minds, reasoning skills, math skills and many other abilities.

Many studies have shown that children who play with blocks have higher reasoning skills. Children that play with blocks have better math skills. Autistic children have been shown to interact social better with building block play.

Help your kids develop skills by playing with wooden building blocks. For best results, get down on the floor and challenge them to use their imagination. Ask them to build different structures. Have them show you how a building or a scene looked in a story you just read. It really works!

Wooden blocks may be simple and low-tech but they have proven themselves to such an extent that they are found in almost every child's toy box. They are a hands on, mind challenging, eye/hand coordination toy that will never be replaced with a battery operated alternative.

4 Ways in Preparing Your Home For a Baby

Before you even think about conceiving a child, it's best to plan already on how you can keep a safe environment for your little one. Babies are very sensitive and as they are growing up, they would tend to be very curious about their surroundings and try to reach out and feel things even ending up putting them inside their mouth. So to help you prepare your home for a more baby-friendly environment where they can safely grow up in, here are some useful tips you can use:

1. Discard old paints or keep them out of the house - If you have some opened cans of paint and other other things that smell strongly of chemicals, it would be best to have them disposed already especially if you haven't been using them for a very long time. Or if you think you will still find use for them eventually, keep them out of the house tucked safely elsewhere like the garage where their smell will not spill into the house. Chemical fumes are very dangerous to you during your pregnancy because it can have a drastic effect on your baby's development.

2. Provide a baby gate on the front door and on the stairs - If you have a second floor, it would be best to have a baby gate right on its lowest and highest steps so you can prevent accidents from happening. This is going to be safe for your baby so even if they crawl you would not run the risk of having them on the stairs.

3. Keep sharp and pointed objects away from view - When you have a baby at home, it's always best to make sure that the floor does not get littered with objects that are sharp and can easily cut them. You should not let things such as scissors also lie around the living room. Better keep a container, best if it can be shut, where all these items can be placed so you can still easily locate them when needed. You also need to cover up and soften sharp corners which may be dangerous for babies.

4. Keep baby supplies in check - Aside from dwelling so much on how your nursery room would look like, you should also focus on the baby supplies that you would need such as infant milk, diapers, medicines, and towels to name a few. If you are also a working mother yet you want to make sure you breastfeed your baby, you would need to consider getting a breast pump so that you can continually do this.

Keeping your home a comfortable and safe place for your baby to dwell in lies on you and your partner. It would be best to do this together so that both of you can become familiar with the new arrangements you have done at home. This way both of you also get really involved as your baby's parents. If you are also going to be working, you need to consider who will you turn to for extra help in taking care of your baby.
