Stress Christmas Game - Can a Computer Game Help Keep Your Holiday Sanity?

Everybody needs a little stress relief around the holidays and a quick computer game might be just the thing to help you forget the more pressing issues in your life for a few minutes. There are several stress Christmas game choices available on the internet for download or immediate play. Some of them are fun, and some are a little annoying - but almost all of them will allow your brain to take a ten-minute break whether you're at the office or on the couch with the laptop.

Check These Out

So if your checkbook is empty, your boss just yelled at you, a customer just complained to you, or a report you just finished writing got erased from your hard drive; sit back, take a few minutes to relax, and Google these:

  • Night of the Snowmen - try shooting and launching grenades at evil snowmen
  • Arcade Lines (Christmas Edition) - addictive puzzle game
  • Christmas Gifts - help Santa deliver gifts by throwing them into houses
  • Chicken Invaders 2 Christmas Edition - save Christmas from invading chickens
  • Loco Christmas Edition - load Santa's trains with Christmas gifts
  • Evil Elves II - help Santa get his toys back from the Terrible Toy Shop
  • Super Santa Ski Jump - control Santa's speed and style as he earns stars

Why the Stress at Christmas?

So why do we need a game to distract us? Why are we stressed at Christmas more than at other times of the year? The reasons are many, but a major cause of stress around the holidays is personal finances. With all of the gifts we need to buy, the parties we must attend, the decorations, and travel - the costs can soar high above our normal monthly budgets. And when money is already tight, the Christmas season can put a huge burden on our ability to meet our regular financial commitments. That leads to stress that can take the joy out of what should be a time of fun, family, and celebration.

What to Do?

If you have financial stress that a quick computer game will not solve, take action to relieve that stress through the holidays and beyond. There are truly only two ways to repair a negative financial situation: take in more money or spend less money. It sounds simple, but it is a profound concept - the money going into the budget has to be more than the money going out of the budget.

There are, of course, many ways to spend less around Christmas (like making gifts, cutting back on travel, etc.) and a few ways to increase your income (find a new or additional job, start a home-based business, or have a garage sale). But whatever you decide, take the action necessary to get out of the financial hole you're in and stick to that course of action. Gaining financial freedom is maybe the best Christmas gift you will ever give yourself; and one that keeps on giving. Then maybe you will find the time to play a few crazy computer games just for fun, and not because you're trying to control your blood pressure.

Setting Up a Summertime Routine For Toddlers and Preschoolers

Are you finding it difficult keeping your toddler or preschooler on a routine at home to avoid any possible behavior issues due to an outside career or other obligations? Well, it doesn't have to be as stressful as it may seem heading into the freedom of summer with your young ones. There are many easy ways to avoid behavior issues in your toddler or preschooler by setting up a summertime routine now that will work for everyone. Here are some ideas to help you get started with this.

Don't forget about your child's social routines. If your child has been attending a preschool or daycare all year, then they've probably developed special friends that they spend time socializing with all day. That means if they can't see these friends during the summer months, they will miss them and probably be very upset by this. Ask your child's preschool for a sign-up sheet for any summer play-dates or leave a notice up on the bulletin board at your child's school with your contact information so other parents can get in touch with you by the time the school year comes to a conclusion. Make the summertime transition easier for your child by honoring their little social life and coordinating play dates with their school friends. This will be a great way for your child to spend time playing with their friends as well as you networking and sharing ideas with other parents of similar interests.

Start a simple summertime project. Giving your child something to look forward to, such as taking swimming lessons or creating a summer scrap book, is a great way to bridge the transition between the school year and carefree days of summer. Not only will it give you both something fun to do together, but they will learn the meaning of accomplishing a goal and have something to develop a sense of independence and self-confidence.

Use existing routines to set up a workable summer routine. If your child is already attending preschool or daycare, he or she has been on a routine all year. That means it will be easier to set up a workable summer routine that will be easy to adapt to. Check with your child's school to determine what that schedule has been like and then design one around that. Chances are that you will still be working throughout the summer months, so that will not disrupt your child's time at daycare. Try to stick with consistent times for meals, naps and activities. For example, if your child normally eats breakfast at 8 am, then you will want to plan your early morning meal for a time close to that in order to avoid a hungry and fussy child at 9 am. Follow the meal with a short period of playtime and then a nap to help your child get restorative rest and you a break.

By establishing some realistic routines now, you will get a jump start on the summertime with your toddler or preschooler and reduce the chances that they will end up having behavior problems.

Dangers of Used Baby Car Seats

These days it seems everyone is looking for ways to save money, and buying used seems to be a no-brainer. But baby seats should never be purchased used. Here's why:

Baby Seats Can be Damaged Even Though they Appear to be Fine

Baby car seats are designed to protect infants from the incredible forces involved in a car crash. They are built to secure the infant safely, and also to absorb some of the energy released in the crash. They absorb the energy by flexing - if they were strong enough not to flex they wouldn't be capable of doing their jobs. But, the very fact that they do flex when stressed in an accident means that they can be damaged even when they show no signs of damage. If they are in another car crash they may fail, and break, instead of flexing causing severe injury or death to the baby they are supposed to be protecting.

Car Insurance Companies Don't Take Risks with Car Seats

If you attempt to purchase one used you have no way of knowing if it has ever been in an accident. It may look perfectly fine, but be still be damaged and incapable of functioning safely. This is why car insurance routinely pay for new baby car seats after accidents even when the seat has no sign of damage.

Don't Rely on the Seller's Representations

You cannot count on the representations of the person selling the used baby car seat. Even if they honestly believe that the baby car seat has never been in an accident, they could have simply forgotten about it because there were no injuries and no obvious damage to the seat. Also, it could have been damaged in another way, by being dropped or improperly installed.

Used Baby Seats May Not Meet Current Safety Standards

Finally, by avoiding used baby seats , and only buying new, you are ensuring that the seat conforms to the latest safety specifications. Many older baby seats - like other baby furniture - does not meet current safety requirements. Baby seats should be discarded, not resold. Never risk buying one used.

Giving to Get Vs Giving to Give

I'm a gardener and by definition that makes me an optimist. Even my farming fizzles don't deter me from continuing to bury peach pits or old potatoes. Those of you who've outgrown playing in the dirt may laugh, but every so often my efforts pay off big time. Like a couple of summers ago when the tomato gods smiled upon us. God did they ever! In fact, they were still laughing their heads off a full week before Halloween. Too bad you can't carve a tomato.

When it comes to gardening, I'm not ashamed to say that I give only to get. I shower my plants with regular infusions of compost tea and worm castings because I want something in return. I believe that I'm entitled to a major payback for all my efforts otherwise I wouldn't bother.

When it comes to raising kids, there isn't really a payback. Not coming directly from them to you. Of course, there are rewards along the way. Like the joy we experience when they succeed at something they've worked for. And the pride we feel when our children honor us and themselves by making healthy choices -especially when we're not around to prod them. But those perks aren't why we give to our kids. We'd still do it even if we got nothing to brag about. Why? Because, the simple fact is that we parents are in the business of giving to give. Parenting, unlike marriage, is a one-way street.

Does this mean that you'll inevitably raise a young adult focused only on her own needs? Hopefully not! Because a big part of what you should be giving your kids is an education about what it means to be thoughtful, loving and compassionate. Hopefully you demonstrate that in the way you treat them. Set clear expectations for the behavior you want them to exhibit and you'll see more of the good stuff. When you do shower those young 'uns with praise. And pat yourself on the back. You're helping to launch a loving spirit into the world.

Now there's a harvest worth a whole lot more than a basket of tomatoes.

Fun Hen Night Games

Kicking back on the last night of freedom is the ultimate goal for many brides and their friends. While typically they might be proper ladies, on hen night the wild child comes out from within and the party begins. Having a wild and crazy hen night is the last chance that you will have to go crazy and for those who are looking forward to a night on the wild side, it can be full of thrills and excitement.

Some wild hen night games focus around alcohol. If the bride and most of the guests are all in a position to be drinking, then pulling out a few drinking games can be a ton of fun. For a modified version of how well do you know the bride, you could delegate the loser of questions to take a shot of alcohol. With some opting to get questions wrong just so they can take a shot it is sure to get quite entertaining.

Additional options can include a naughty scavenger hunt. Trying to track down as many racy and adult items as you can before the night is over is a true thrill. Award a prize to the top seeker and watch the drama and fun begin to unfold. With plenty of ways that you can shake this up, you could even allow guests to work in teams to see which team can find all of the items first.

Taboo is also a lot of fun and with carefully selected dares can be a true thrill. By designing several words for the party as taboo, anyone who says the word is required to complete a dare. Keeping it exciting while still safe ensures that everyone gets home safely, but everyone at the party is still able to thoroughly enjoy the occasions where someone slips up and says a forbidden word.

Putting together a truly memorable hen night with great games can be a ton of fun, just remember always take into account the wishes of the bride before you make any final decisions. Since the party is ultimately for them, you want to make sure that they are happy and in no way uncomfortable. Of course, if the bride is the one starting most of the racy games, then feel free to let loose and enjoy the evening since it is after all a hen party!

The Secrets of Making Healthy Compost

Following on from the previous two articles on 'Unlocking the Secrets of Sand, Clay and Silt Soils' and 'The Secrets of Plant Nutrients', this article is going discuss how to make beautiful compost that smells sweet, is lovely to touch and full of nutrients for your plants. This end product of composting is called humus. Compost that ends up smelly and sludgy is not broken down properly. This article will help you correct that problem. It is all about oxygen and getting the Carbon:Nitrogen ratio correct.

Compost is important for several reasons:-

It improves soil structure can increase or decrease soil pH it encourages micro-organisms and worms it holds water, preventing the water leaching through the soil profile it improves the pore spaces between the particles of clay soil it cools soil temperatures during summer it contains nutrients if you make your own, you control what goes into it reduces the demand for landfill tips

However, you do need to be aware of the pitfalls:-the quality of the compost depends entirely on what you put into it it can be expensive if you have to buy in the ingredients weeds such as Couch grass if growing near-by can grow into it if it hasn't heated up to over 60C, the bad micro-organisms and weed seeds haven't been destroyed if there is too much nitrogen and not enough oxygen in it, it smells disgusting large pieces such as sticks don't break down; pieces need to be very small and insects and critters can live in it as it is such a good source of food

Another aspect you need to be aware of is, inadvertently building up the soil level. Over the years of adding compost and mulches, the original soil level increases to the point where it is several inches or centimetres higher. This can cause problems because the plant roots are no longer at the surface of the soil and aren't getting as much oxygen as they once did. All plant roots need oxygen and if it is not available all plants die. This happens more with mulches but you still need to be aware of it with compost.

Overall, the good points outweight the bad ones.

C:N Ratio C:N stands for Carbon:Nitrogen ratio. This ratio needs to be balanced otherwise the compost won't decompose. The reason why composts smell is because there is too much nitrogen (kitchen scraps, grass clippings) and not enough carbon and oxygen. This causes a build up of ammonia and this is what causes the smell. To rectify this problem more carbon needs to be added in the form of paper or leaves. The ratio is usually 30:1, this means 30 parts of carbon to 1 part nitrogen.

Methods of Composting There are two main ways of making compost: The Hot Method (fast) and the Cold Method (slow). The fast method brings the temperature of the heap to over 60C and this kills the harmful bacteria. For the fast method to work, the compost heap needs to be in a warm and sunny spot and turned regularly ie. 3-4 times per week. The cold method is usually compost made in the green compost bins. The bins need to be in a warm place that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. It can take up to 6 months for the compost to be ready.

Principles of Composting A compost heap can be compared to a party for micro-organisms where they consume a huge amount of food in the process of this get really hot doing it.Like all parties, there needs to be some preparation and the party goers (micro-organisms) need the right conditions. If the conditions are right the micro-organisms will multiply break down the organic matter.

Ingredients Needed The main ingredient is organic matter. Carbon can be identified as all the brown products such as saw dust and nitrogen can be identified as all the green products such as lawn clipping. Below is a list of all the things you can put into your compost heap. leaves, pea straw, sugar cane grass clippings kitchen waste (not meat or fats and oils) old potting mix the muck from the gutters saw dust dust from the vacuum cleaner shredded twigs and branches discarded annuals perennial flower stalks dog and cat hair human hair shredded paper products - not the glossy coloured pages

Construction of Composting Bays You need an area at least 1.5m X 3m for it to work This gives you plenty of room for turning your compost Walls are constructed from corrugated iron, or steel mesh, held in place using steel stakes,Star pickets or concrete -re-enforcing rods cut to length. Timber stakes rot too quickly. Form 3 bays that are open fronted 1 Bay is for putting material in to break down, 1 bay for spreading on the garden and the last bay is allowed to turn into compost. Turn using a fork on a weekly basis. Adds some nitrogen fertiliser - about 3 to 4 handfuls, blood and bone as it contains a high percentage of nitrogen. As micro-organisms break down the material in the heap they rely heavily on nitrogen present and quickly use it up. Adding blood and bone fertiliser replaces nitrogen used by micro-organisms.

Compost Bins This method of composting is best suited to those who have a plastic compost bin are in no hurry for having compost. This method can take up to 6 months. You can hurry up the process by regularly turning the compost at least 3 times a week. The extra oxygen allows the micro-organisms to break down the material more quickly. You don't need to buy worms for your compost bins, they will come naturally if the conditions are right for them. Don't build your compost heaps on bricks or concrete. The worms need to be able to escape into the soil if it is to hot or to wet. Then simply add all the kitchen and garden waste listed previously and over a period of time the worms will gradually eat their way through whatever you feed them. Micro- organisms will also be present in the bin and assist the breakdown process. These bins are especially good for smaller gardens. Watch the moisture content - they can be come too wet. Drill holes in the side to allow oxygen into the bin. Keep in a cool shady spot - Worms don't like the heat. Don't put citrus or onions in the compost.

Temperature The hotter the air temperature, the faster the compost breaks down. In winter compost takes several months longer to break down as the air temperature is colder.

Moisture The compost heap must contain some moisture for the micro-organisms to function effectively. The heap must be moisture but not too wet. The compost should have the same feeling as a squeezed kitchen sponge; it feels damp but not soggy. This is about 50% moisture content and is perfect for composting. The best time to add moisture to the heap is during the turning procedure where water can be applied to all areas of the heap and then mixed through.

Compost is ready to use when the inside temperature of the heap is the same as the outside air temperature. The length of time this takes depends on all of the factors that have been discussed ie. type of materials used, moisture content, frequency of turning etc.

Applying Compost to the Soil Compost can be applied to the soil in two ways:

1.By spreading it on top of the existing garden beds and letting the worms move it down into the soil or mixing it with the existing soil by digging it through. Care must be taken that roots of existing trees and shrub are not disturbed. Digging it in to a spades depth is ideal for a vegetable patch, annual or perennial beds.

2.Using the compost as a mulch and simply spreading it over the surface of the garden to a depth of about 4 centimetres. But be careful, it can become compacted because of the small particles if you put it too thickly on and then can become water resistant.

Compost Accelerators Products marketed to assist the breaking down process don't work so don't buy them. If you want to try and hurry up the breaking down process you can add herbs such as comfrey or borage.

Compost is a wonderful resource with many benefits. It is a fantastic way to use up garden and kitchen wastes and reduce landfill. It also has the added benefit of improving the water holding capacity of the soil and reducing run off. The quality of the final product - the humus - depends on how much effort you put into it and what you put into it. The secret of good healthy compost is oxygen.

Pregnancy, Week 24 - What to Look For

Once you hit the 24 week stage in your pregnancy, some nice things begin to happen. Here is a look at what you can expect at this point.

The biggest thing you will experience is the end of morning sickness. In most cases you will start feeling pretty good in the mornings and be through with those nauseous feelings.

Baby

At this stage your baby is up to around 1.5 pounds and around 11.5 inches in length. Better than that, he/she is just about finished being formed. They are starting to grow what is called, brown fat. What this does is help to keep them warm. Why is it necessary? Basically, it is to keep their body heat from escaping after delivery. It helps them to stay warm, which is always a big concern.

Mom

As mentioned earlier, you are past the morning sickness stage. Other than that, you can plan having a glucose tolerance test from your doctor. Weeks 24-28 are the times when you will be tested for gestational diabetes. This is critically important for both you and your baby. Your doctor will explain it in further detail, but this simple blood test will shed a light on any potential problem.

One nice thing you can begin doing, if you haven't already, is to talk to your baby. They will now begin to recognize your voice and dad's as well. You can even sing songs to them or play music and they will sometimes let you know they like it. It is amazing to say the least.

Ways to Induce Labor at Home

Being pregnant has been a wonderful experience for you. You feel so connected to your child and it has been an amazing time growing and learning more about yourself. However, you are near or past your due date and you are living through what feels like hell on earth. It is extremely painful to live through these contractions on a daily basis and you don't know what to do. If you are woman who is going through this, then you need some advice.

All you want to do is induce your own labor so the baby can come out. You are so frustrated and tired of the pain that you need to get rid of it. Your body and your mind cannot take much more of this. You are irritable and desperate for a solution. It is time that the baby got out of there so you can feel relief.

Thankfully, there are ways that you can induce labor at home. Finally, you can get the relief that you are looking for. A great way to induce your labor is to eat spicy foods. Eating spicy foods helps to speed up your body and the systems that it regulates. For instance, your heart rate increases and so do other systems of your body. Another way to induce your labor is to relax. This allows your body to open up so that baby can come out. When you are stressed, your body is tense and there is no way that you will go into labor.

Composting and Insects

Cold Composting

Cold composting consists of composting vegetable waste from the kitchen or garden and grass clippings. The vegetable waste contains more water than yard clippings. This extra moisture greatly slows the decomposition process and the temperature of the heap remains cooler, thus the term cold composting. Composting piles that contain moisture usually contain large numbers of redworms and insect larvae. Common redworms are sometimes added to the compost heap to aid in the decomposition process.

Insects In Your Compost Heap

There are a number of different insects that live in cold compost piles that contain vegetable material. The presence of these insects is positive since they aid in decomposition of the material.

When you first add kitchen vegetable matter you may get a large number of fruit flies until decomposition of the vegetable matter begins. Fruit flies lay their eggs in fruit and vegetable waste. Their maggots feed on the bacteria and fungus of the decomposing vegetable matter. A variety arthropods and small insects, like sowbugs will set up housekeeping in cold composting heaps. These insects feed on the bacteria and fungus that are present in the cold compost heap. Do not try to control these insects with insecticides since this will interfere with heap's equilibrium and slow down decomposition. These insects speed the decomposition of vegetable waste and grass clippings in the heap. Never put meat, fat, or oils into your compost heap. These will rot and cause offensive odors and will attract house flies and scavenging rodents.

Teach Your Child Money Management

Some parents may disagree that giving a child an allowance can help them prepare for the day when they will be managing their own finances, but, if done right, an allowance will help them understand the concept of finances.

The wrong way to give an allowance.

My friend Lisa works hard. She gives her seven year old daughter five dollars a week. In return, she expects her child to keep her room clean and help around the house. I've never heard Lisa talk to her child about money. I have heard her berate her young daughter for mishandling money. This technique simply won't work. Her child needs to be taught - not admonished.

An allowance can be a great way to teach discipline and responsibility.

Teach your kids how to count money before starting an allowance. Make it a game. Spend a few minutes each week. Maybe you can dump your change out onto the counter while you are cooking dinner and have your child count it. If they get it right, tell them they did a good job. If they have trouble counting your change, encourage them. Assure them that they tried hard, and soon they will be able to do it. Encouragement goes a long way to building the confidence your child needs. A child with confidence tends to work harder to meet their goals.

End the whining in the store.

I hate shopping with my friend Lisa and her daughter. Invariably, the daughter sees something she wants and demands it. Lisa says "no", and a fight breaks out. The daughter ends up whining and crying and occasionally treating us to a full blown temper tantrum. We all end up miserable. I once suggested to Lisa that she teach her daughter money management. If she allowed her daughter to bring her allowance to the store, her daughter could learn how to spend her own money. Lisa just snorted and said that her daughter would never learn.

Lisa's right. Her daughter won't learn until someone takes the time to teach her - or until she grows up, moves out of the house and is forced to learn the hard way how to save and budget and understand how to make buying decisions. I would much rather have my child make wrong choices in spending a five or ten dollar allowance than have her grow up unable to resist spending simply because no one took the time to show her and encourage her.

Help Them Learn.

When my son was in high school, his allowance was enough to buy lunch at school and have spending money left over for other things. There were many Friday's that he went hungry because he had spent his allowance and didn't have enough left for Friday's lunch. Occasionally he missed lunch on Thursdays too. The good news is: he didn't starve to death. And he learned the value of money. He learned that if he didn't pay attention to what he was spending, he would have to make a sacrifice. As much as it bothered me at the time to let him go hungry when he spent his money, I am now proud that he handles money better than I do.

Let Them Earn Extra Money.

I always found ways for my son to earn extra money. Snow needed to be shoveled in the winter; grass needed to be mowed in the summer. Either chore would earn him an extra $10. I also gave him incentives for saving. If he wanted a new bike, we would price it. Then I would tell him that if he saved 2/3 of the price, I would pay the balance. He became very conservative in his spending habits when he found that his goal was achievable and I was willing to help.

Let Them in on Family Budgeting.

As soon as they reach their teens, kids are able to understand and help with planning. A trip to the grocery store can involve them in making lists and shopping within a budget. The biggest lesson they can learn here is "avoiding impulse buying." For new appliances, teenagers can do the research and read reviews. Let them watch you negotiate with salesmen on the price.

Watch Them Save.

When you take the time to teach your child financial awareness, they will show you how well they catch on. Don't be surprised if you raise kids who manage their money better than you ever did.

Take These Techniques on Conceiving Twins

Multiple nativities are more frequent than they were in the ancient times, due to the increasing typical age of mothers and the related increase in assisted reproductive methods such as in-vitro fertilization. Conceiving twins account for above ninety percent of multiple births.

For parents who have always wanted to know how to have twins. Here are some ideas that are considered in giving birth to twins. Twins are more or less evenly probably to be female or male. Opposing to standard certainty, the prevalence of twins doesn't pass over generations.

1. Those women who have been consecrated on conceiving twins are said to have come from an ancestors of twins. Part of this is correct for the capability to hyper ovulate is inherited and a lady may perhaps accede this from the maternal side. Whereas this can be one of the most apparent traditions in, conceiving twins there are moreover additional causes that may possibly accelerate a woman's hyper ovulation procedures that can lead to multiple births.

In a lot of cases, ladies with above standard weight and height furthermore have better probability of conceiving twins. Adult ladies who's ages are raging from 35 years old and above have a higher probability of conceiving twins over their younger counterparts.

Equally a twin pregnancy and complex maternal age are separately associated with higher threat for gestational diabetes and pregnancy stimulated hypertension. Still, several older women, if they sustain good health and exercise, can have extremely simple pregnancies.

Childbirth can present difficulties when just one baby is present, so twins present additional prospective for complexities. It is recommended that women carrying twins give birth in hospital, to a certain extent than at home.

2. You've previously had one set of twins. For mothers who have previously had one set of fraternal twins, their likelihood of conceiving one more set are four times superior than the average woman.

3. Have a daily folic acid intake - Folic acid is significant for every hale and hearty pregnancy, and it has furthermore been revealed to enhance the probability of conceiving twins. If you would like to have twins, start taking folic acid at least one month ahead of conception.

4. Drink milk and eat beef to increase the odds of having twins

5. Keep nurturing your child or toddler as you struggle to conceive twins naturally. According to one investigation, ladies who are still nurturing their child with breast milk and the woman is productive are to some extent more probable to produce twins.

Distraction From Pain During Labour

Many women find the discomfort of labour, particularly backache, can be alleviated with massage. Counter pressure can be provided by your partner using his hands or a spinal roll, or even a tennis ball! If using the hands to massage, it is best to use a small amount of cream, talcum powder or vegetable-based massage oil to stop your skin from being dragged or rubbed sore. A hot water bottle or a hot pad placed in the small of your back can also act as a compress to soothe backache.

FOOD AND DRINK

As a first labour can last up to 15 hours, check whether the hospitals policy allows you to eat during labour - these days it usually does - so, pack a few snacks such as chocolate bars, which will give you instant energy. In fact, shortly before labour, the ability of your stomach to absorb food decreases, so you should eat only easily digested food.

Your partner will certainly need some sustenance during your labour and probably would not want to leave your side to go in search of it - especially if it is in the middle of the night, so make sure that you pack a supply of sandwiches, energy bars and fruit for him or her too.

After the birth you are both likely to be ravenous and you'll want something to eat straight away. You will also need to drink: a bottle or vacuum flask of diluted, unsweetened fruit juice or cold water is ideal for you, although your partner might prefer canned soft drinks.

PAIN-RELIEVING ITEMS

There are several pain-relieving items that can help you with pain-relief. Items like powder, tennis ball, massage oil or hot water bottle will be useful to relieve backache, a common problem in labour.

YOUR NOURISHMENT

In case your labour starts slowly or is particularly long and tiring you may need to take into the hospital a supply of food and drink to keep you going during the first stage. Your partner will also need refreshments to keep up his or her energy levels.

Checklist - thing that you should take into consideration:

- make several sandwiches for your partner, and for yourself afterwards.

- sweets can be sucked slowly and provide glucose.

- drink diluted fruit juices or cooled water. Fizzy drinks are best.

- chocolate bars are excellent for providing instant energy - fresh fruit is refreshing, portable and a good source of energy.

You may want to keep your projects very simple to begin with. Check out your local hobby shop or hardware store to see what types of simple, prefabricated projects are available. Most of these projects require only a limited number of tools that are commonly found in most homes.

If you want to start moving onto more difficult projects, or you want to just jump right into something more challenging, the internet is a great source for finding simple woodworking projects of all sorts. But, if you're a beginner, remember to keep your first few projects fairly simple. You want something that's within your ability level, and something you'll be able to accomplish without getting discouraged.

Once you find the project you will complete, begin by breaking the entire process down into steps. It's best to start with a project that already provides you with step by step instructions on how to get from beginning to end, but if you can't find one, you will just need to create it yourself. Take your time creating this process, as it's very important to the success of your project.

After your step by step process is created, go over it as a whole to see whether or not this project is something that's achievable for you at this moment in time, given your current skill level. If it's not something that you feel you can accomplish right now, that's quite alright. Just keep that project on your 'to do' list for the future, when your expertise reaches the level needed to complete it properly.

If it is something that you feel you'll be able to complete, that's great! Now it's time to get to work! Create a list of all of the items you'll need to gather. You will also want to create a list of all of the pieces of equipment that you will need for this project. If you do not have a certain tool, see if there's an alternative that you can use to accomplish the same task. If not, you may have to rent a tool to do the job, or you may have to postpone the project entirely. The last thing you would want would be to get half way through a project, only to realize that you don't have the tools needed to complete it.

Above all else, keep it simple and fun, and get creative wherever possible! And get ready to amaze yourself with what you're able to accomplish!

My Son's Perfect Woman

Is there such a thing as the perfect woman? This occurred to me during a bedtime talk with my 9-year old son. He mentioned that he couldn't wait for college because "there is a time and place for everything," he said, "and that's college." Curious by what he thought happened in college, he informed me that he would meet his perfect woman there. What came next is what disturbed me the most.

He described his "perfect woman" as a "girl with long, dangly hair, a small nose, a tiny butt, big boobs, lots of lipstick," and most of all, "a clear face without any pimples or freckles." Oh, and yes, she must wear tennis shoes instead of high heels. Once I regained my composure and resisted the urge to ensue a lesson on sexism, I asked him what type of personality he wanted in this perfect woman. His response? "That doesn't matter, mom."

But it does matter.

It's no wonder that women have body image issues. If a 9-year old boy, raised in a single mom household with more female influence than most boys his age, has already established the ability to pass judgment on women based solely on appearance, where is the hope for the rest of society, a society that is preoccupied with body parts, bikini-clad models, and the thinness of celebrities.

So, I took the time to discuss the importance of internal and external features in a mate, promptly putting him to sleep faster than a bedtime story. My sense of hope for society was renewed, though, when I asked my 10-year old daughter her thoughts on the perfect woman. She replied with, "Duh, mom, that would be me." I love her confidence, confidence that will surely put her brother in his place once he reaches that time and place, known as college.

Positive Discipline Strategies For a Five Year Old (Part 1)

Parents are always wondering how they can reach and motivate their 5 year old. The purpose of this article is to teach parents different strategies to provide positive discipline techniques for children in this age rage.

The first strategy is to stop telling their children to "use their words". This sounds like a positive thing to say, except for the fact it is meaningless to your 5 year old. You are not telling your child what to do, or how to do. Instead of using this phrase make sure that you give your child the words he or she is attempting to communicate.

Another positive way to implement discipline for children this age is to start off by asking how your child is experiencing things. In other words, ask you child "Are you proud of yourself for getting a 90 on the spelling test", "What was the coolest thing you learned in math class today", or "What was the most challenging thing for you today during school?" Questions like these will help facilitate your child's ability to share his or her feelings with you.

Last but not least it is extremely important to reflect back to the child what you hear him or her saying to you. For example say to your child "It seems like you are angry when I did not answer your question right away". "You look sad that is time to clean up after the fun time you were having playing that game", or "You look very excited to go outside and play!" Reflecting back what you see the child expressing will help your five year old share with you.

In conclusion, children of this age are constantly looking to you as the parent to follow your lead. Always to be sure to mean what you say and say what you mean.

Diapers Online - Not Used, Recycled

Traditional cotton diapers last just about forever, and new cotton/hemp cloth diapers probably can withstand thermo-nuclear meltdown, so you easily will find great bargains on "recycled" diapers online. Yes, a baby has used them, but a thoughtful, earth-loving mom now is recycling them.

High-tech hand-me-downs? Think about buying recycled cotton diapers online.
Old-fashioned cloth diapers passed from child to child and generation to generation, a great investment carried to its furthest extreme. When a family ran out of babies, it passed the trustworthy, durable cotton diapers to neighbors and friends. With proper care, an old-fashioned cotton diaper easily could outlive and out-perform any of those fancy new organics with pretentious names like "Seventh Generation" or "Earth's Best." Therefore, you still find lots of online ads for perfectly serviceable cotton diapers. Yes, babies have used them, but by the time they arrive at your house, you legitimately may describe them as "recycled." If you have new energy-saving appliances, a graywater recovery system, and advanced detergents that wash well in cold water, you effectively have met all the eco-friendly conditions, and you seriously should consider investing in recycled cotton diapers.

Buy Indestructible "Pocket Diapers" Online
Earth-conscious parents not only buy "green" products, they also protect the planet's future by having fewer children. Lots of great new baby products pop-up at yard sales and on the internet long before they have used-up their usefulness. Online opportunists, therefore, can pick-up amazing bargains on "gently used" all-in-one diapers or "AIO's" as the cool parents call them. The outer layer of a two-piece system commonly called the "wrapper" or "pocket" is made of waterproof, heavy-duty, eco-safe fabric; the pocket washes easily, sun-dries quickly, and is so overwhelmingly cute nine out of ten moms grow weak-kneed and wobbly at the sight. For girls, pockets come in all colors, many girly styles, and a variety of fashion-forward fabrics. Because they have gained widespread popularity in just the last two or three years, the average recycled model still makes a great fashion statement. For boys, you will find pockets in cargo styles, camouflage fabrics, and board shorts.

Surrogate Mother - Market Meets Moral

Being a surrogate mother is one of the toughest experiences a woman can go through. In the process of taking care of her body and that of the child inside her, the woman goes through enormous amounts of trouble for a child. The process works somewhat like this, a couple wanting a child and cannot have one ask a relative or a volunteer to carry the child for them. The couple is not always one husband and wife, it could be homosexual couple or a single mother wanting a baby. It helps the couple who cannot have a child because of problems like female infertility and other medical conditions that become an obstacle towards pregnancy for the couple. Hence, when the couples choose a surrogate mother they tend to make them go through careful screening and proper health check up.

To make sure that they do not have any of the problems in the duration of the pregnancy that otherwise they could have avoided. In other words it can be called a renting of the womb in which a woman gives happiness and content to another family; on the other hand getting a little compensation out of it herself. While the issue of legality is another issue that needs to be kept in mind with such a delicate procedure, while countries like Japan and Netherlands have banned surrogacy other countries support it. The legality comes with the fact can someone's body be used for another persons wish for a price. While, there would be no issue in getting females to volunteer, the problem arises how many of them would be a good choice and the sum being paid is enough. Even though it could be allowed there are problems relating to the ethical issues involved, the mother child relationship that is severed; the problem of accommodating someone's child in your own house; the exchange of life for money. All though these might seem as trivial and frivolous moaning, the fact is that these are very real for a woman who has been carrying a child in her womb for nine months and gives it away. If the surrogate mother decides otherwise it can cause a lot of inconvenience to the couple. Especially when the couple has already invested a lot of money in the procedure, they could be left mulcted out of their money and not get their due, in this case a child. Well, the problems that could arise are numerous the reward is also equally worth the risk, that the couple are willing to take. In the long run such a risk seems small and a not worth the attention.

So, while riddled with ethical and legal problems people are ready to face them to have someone carry on their legacy. They are ready to fight and face those problems they otherwise would have shuddered at. This makes one really re-think the stance of surrogacy, is it giving life to someone else or is taking someone from them, highly debatable but at the same time clear as crystal if we may call it that.

Show You Trust And It Will Be Returned

Parenting is not something one should ever take lightly. Having children is a 24-hours business and taking good care of your kids is something you should invest time to study and learn; preferably not on their expense. But very few parents are always conscious of the fact that their present choices and behavior can and will shape the character of their kids. Treating your child with the same respect and attention you want it to treat you later is not always what parents focus on today. Job related problems, economic worries, stress, and less free time, can make parents grouchy, which in turn can lead children to their rooms feeling isolated and unappreciated.

I do not doubt that you love your child. Actually, in a perfect world all parents would. But respecting their choices and understanding their fears are areas that parents need to pay special attention to. Family studies over the years have shown that children problems like eating disorders, depression, and aggressiveness, are directly linked with the child's psychological state, which greatly depends on how appreciated it feels and if it can trust and be trusted by its parents.

Usual complaints that youngsters, belonging to all age groups, have in common are the lack of parental trust and their feeling of being isolated. It is crucial that you do not disregard your kid's opinion; even when it seems to be silly or does not make any sense. Your children might not yet be adults, but they will become one someday. You do not wish your children to be afraid to state their opinions in the future based on the negative experiences they had to face inside your house today. It is a very unpleasant feeling to think that your own parents do not trust you enough to speak to you, or to realize that they consider you incapable of handling any kind of important information. The outcome is that you will not be trusted too.

A child treated with such disrespect will actually disrespect others, beginning with his or her parents. If you observe that your kid prefers to avoid any chance of speaking to you or confide, then you should realize that you are about to cross dangerous waters. If the child does not feel trusted, it will not trust in turn. It's only logical. Thus, if you want your kids to consider themselves to be members of your family and not that they are accidentally under the same roof with you, speak and let your children get involved. They might not understand a lot at the beginning or at an early age, but it is your job to teach them how and what they can do to help.

Demonstrate to your children through relaxed but frequent discussions that their opinion does matter for you and gain their trust. Sometimes it takes only a moment to make all the difference in the world.

Top 26 Tips to Help When Your Tot is Teething

There are no hard and fast rules about what remedies will work for your child, particularly when you are looking for drug-free alternatives to relieve the miseries of teething. The following 26 tips from Little Sunflowers have been compiled from our own experiences and those of our customers, together with guidance from all around the internet. Some may work for you and some may not - but they're all worth a go! Keep trying different things until you find something which works for your child.

1. Cuddles are the most important thing you can give your teething child to comfort and reassure them - tender loving care goes a long way when your little one's teeth are hurting.

2. Cold foods, such as yogurt or fruit puree can help to numb the pain.

3. A cold drink can soothe the whole mouth so pop a bottle of boiled water, breast or formula milk into the fridge and offer it to your baby when it's cold (though not too cold as you don't want a tummy chill).

4. A weak chamomile infusion, or weak chamomile tea, is useful as a gentle sedative. Offer it to your baby from a bottle.

5. Plenty of water or heavily diluted juice should be given to your baby to replenish fluids when they are dribbling a lot.

6. A wet flannel which has been rung out and chilled can bring relief to a baby who is keen to chew on something - the rough texture really seems to help.

7. 2 drops of chamomile in 15ml of aloe vera gel can be used to massage the child's jaw and neck area.

8. Lightly massage your baby's gums with a clean finger the part that is sore will often feel hot to the touch and you will probably be able to feel the tooth coming through under the surface.

9. Dilute 1 drop of clove oil in 2 tablespoons of safflower oil and gently massage the affected area 2-3 times a day.

10. Rub your baby's gums with a small gauze pad - not only will this bring relief, but it will get your child used to the sensation of what it's like to have his or her

teeth cleaned.

11. Try a baby teething gel massaged across the gums for babies older than four months (recent articles expressing concern about using gels for this purpose referred to adult gels rather than those designed for babies.) Ensure you check the dosage and expiry date.

12. Crush a little ice and put it in a thin cotton cloth, then rub gently on the gums. Ensure ice doesn't come into direct contact with the gum, and ensure you keep the wrapped ice moving (children who hold frozen items against their gums for too long can actually get frostbite).

13. Chill some pieces of fruit or vegetables, wrap them in muslin and give them to your baby to chew under supervision.

14. Sterilised teething rings can provide temporary relief for the baby and actually help the teeth to cut through. Try one that's been chilled in the fridge for greater relief (or even gel-filled rings which can work well when they've been cooled in the fridge).

15. Chill a metal spoon in the fridge and allow your child to chew on it under supervision.

16. Allow your child to bite on the knuckle of your forefinger held sideways - it'll bring them comfort an hurt a lot less than you think!

17. Homeopathic Teething Granules contain soothing chamomilla, a traditional homeopathic remedy for teething pain in an easy-to-use form. They are available in your High Street Chemist - always read the label.

18. Consult a Homeopath, who will who will be able to recommend a number of remedies to relieve the symptoms associated with teething.

19. An amber teething necklace can be worn against the skin to calm and relax a teething child - these necklaces have been worn for generations across Europe in countries like Germany and Switzerland, though it is quite a new concept in the UK.

20. Make teething biscuits by mixing 1 cup of flour with 1 cup of baby cereal and 1 cup of juice. Roll out, cut into shapes, then bake at 350 degrees F for 20-30 minutes. Allow your baby to chew on them (when you are there, in case a small piece breaks off). These biscuits freeze well.

21. Chill carrot sticks, cucumber sticks or bread slices in the fridge and allow your baby to chew on them (only when you are there, in case a small piece breaks off). Avoid anything too hard as they could bruise the gums and make things more painful.

22. Distract your baby with something to play with or a change of scenery to divert their attention from the pain. There are a number of teething toys on the market with a dual purpose: your baby can chew on them and they are a distraction from their teeth. Examples include organic teething toys and rattles incorporating a ring and/or knots which can be rubbed against the gums. Sophie the Giraffe has been around for generations - she is made from natural Alpine rubber and non toxic paints and is designed for baby to chew as well as play with.

23. Keep a soft bib around your baby's neck and change it often to soak up dribble, thereby keeping the skin dry and so avoiding a rash.

24. Apply a simple barrier cream to sore chins to keep the skin smooth and ease any chapped skin.

25. Consult a cranial osteopath. Cranial osteopathy is a subtle type of osteopathic treatment using gentle techniques to release strain and tension in the body. It is particularly effective for young babies suffering with teething and colic.

26. Medicine (analgesic) designed especially for babies, such as Calpol or Nurofen, can be given to babies who are three months old or more to help relieve the pain and bring down a raised temperature. Always read the label, and check with your doctor and/or health visitor if a raised temperature persists. Follow your doctor's instructions and never give aspirin to a baby.

Can You Choose the Sex of Your Baby?

Can you really choose the sex of your baby? Well after two beautiful, healthy girls my husband and I are like alot of families we also want a boy to even out our family. There was some guilt at first about wanting to overcome nature抯 50/50 chance. Since then I have become highly interested in uncovering old wives tales regarding gender selection, books that guarantee 99% success rates and modern methods like PGD. What is truth and fiction regarding these methods? Hopefully this article can point you in the right direction.

To understand the truth of gender selection methods on the market today we should first cover the basics of semen. Generally, semen contains sperm cells with 50% being female (X-Chromosomes) and 50% being male (Y-Chromosomes). This is important to choosing the sex of your baby when you understand the characteristics of each chromosome bearing sperm. The X-Chromosome is slower, bigger, stronger, and more resilient while the Y-Chromosome is faster, smaller, less resilient and sensitive to heat.

An important gender selection factor that most people are simply not aware is the fact that the environment of the woman抯 reproductive tract could be either too acidic or too alkaline and kill the 揧?sperm or 揦?sperm. Since the male sperm are weaker a highly acidic tract is a harsh environment for them to survive in, when they are eliminated the only ones left are 揦?sperm, producing a girl. On the other hand alkalinity favors the conception of a baby boy as it will act as a booster to the 揧?sperm since they are faster and will easily beat the slower 揦?sperm to the egg.

Scientific researches have demonstrated that the woman抯 reproductive tract acidity level will have a direct impact on the gender of the baby she conceives. So in conclusion no matter which gender selection method you choose you could still fail at choosing the sex of your baby if you are either too acidic or too alkaline. There are two factors that have a direct impact on the mother抯 pH level, a woman抯 orgasm and her diet.

When a woman has an orgasm her body releases a substance that makes her pH a little more alkaline but it has not been determined in this theory how concentrated the substance is and whether it will efficiently alter the reproductive tract environment. Diet alterations to influence the pH level must take place starting about 6-8 weeks before conception and during conception up until the woman gets pregnant. Most scientist agree that mineral supplements are the way to go about altering the reproductive tract but first you must test your urine or saliva to know where you pH stands in order to know where to begin shifting it.

At this point I would like to warn you about a commonly used method to balance the pH of a woman抯 tract that can be hurtful to you and your baby. Unfortunately a lot of women use water & vinegar or baking soda vaginal douches but they may irritate your vagina and change the normal balance of good bacteria. It can spread an infection from your vagina or cervix up into the uterus thus increasing you risk of getting PID or pelvic inflammatory disease. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has issued a warning alerting women of the potential hazards of douching.

So we have now learned the importance of the reproductive tract抯 environment and diet to choosing the sex of your baby but there is one further step to increasing accuracy in gender selection. The idea is to time sexual intercourse in advance of ovulation with certain timing being more likely to yield girls or boys. The logic is to have intercourse 3 to 4 days before ovulation so that virtually all the male 揧?sperm will have died off in order to conceive a girl. On the other hand you would have intercourse at or very close to ovulation to hopefully yield a son.

Many theories and opinions abound in trying to choose the sex of your baby but if you have found this page hopefully the information has been informative. On my final note I have chosen not to list or argue the moral issues of gender selection that is for you to decide for yourself. I only wish to list the factual information I have studied. You Get What You Expect From Your Children

Children are amazing. I love to listen to stories about children and their behaviour. I heard one I'd like to share.

A teacher started at a new school and she was told the class she was to teach was the best they had ever had. Every child was an overachiever with special interests and talents and she was to do her best to encourage them to develop their talents.

Another teacher started at the same school but she was given a class, which she was told would be a handful. The children were hard to control and they had difficulty understanding their schoolwork. She would need to have a lot of patience with them.

By the end of the year, both teachers had what they expected. The interesting part was that the two classes were just ordinary students at the beginning of the year. The teachers, acting on the false information, had influenced the classes to behave the way the teacher expected.

It just shows that you get what you expect to get. If you treat a child with respect and the expectation of good behaviour, you will encourage him to behave respectfully and to produce something to fill the expectation. In the case of the teachers, the children who were believed to be high achievers became high achievers. The other children, who did not perform well, did not perform because nothing better was expected of them.

Imagine for a moment if you expected the best from every child and treated them as if they were already giving you their best. Perhaps we would find our children were capable of far more than we could guess. It would give them self-confidence knowing you did not doubt them. It would give them ideals to live up to and they would work harder to earn your continuing respect.

This principle doesn't stop with children. If you treat your friends, family and co-workers as if they were already producing the best in every way you may be surprised at the difference you can make in your life and theirs. Don't forget to try it yourself. You get what you expect so why not expect the best.

Cheap Halloween Contacts

Has searching for the perfect pair of cheap Halloween contacts to complete your costume been getting you down? Are you finding that the lenses you want for your costume do not fall within your budget? Looking for cheap Halloween contacts that look good and produce the same effect as the more expensive lenses? Generally, people do not think of Halloween as an expensive holiday. However, in truth, it seems to be getting more costly every year with all of the new accessories that are making their way into the marketplace. The good news is that there are cheap alternatives to even the most expensive Halloween contact lenses.

Halloween contact lenses can be very expensive. However, there are plenty of Halloween contacts that can complement the look of your costume while staying within your budget. You might be asking yourself if cheap Halloween contact lenses are equally as safe as the expensive lenses. The answer is yes. These budget minded lenses are made from the same materials as the expensive ones and are completely safe. However, you will want to make sure that you are buying your lenses from a reputable company and not some fly by night operation. Remember that we are talking about the health and wellness of your eyes/vision.

If you are looking for a way to buy cheap Halloween contacts for this upcoming Halloween season, here are some words of advice for you. First, you must know that there are different types of Halloween contact lenses. Sclea lenses, FX lenses, and conventional colored contact lenses are your main types. Note that Sclera lenses are a lot more expensive than conventional colored contact lenses or FX lenses because they cover the entire eye. So, if it is an all-black sclera lens that you want, try a conventional black-out lens instead! The effect is almost the same, and the price is more in line with the budget of a price minded shopper. Another thing to remember is that the FX lenses that are seen within Hollywood films can also be quite expensive. However, there is usually such wide variety of normal colored lenses that you can usually find contact lenses that resemble these FX style contacts within this section for a fraction of the cost!

Even if the lenses you desire are not within your budget, most people will not notice the difference if you select a pair of cheap Halloween contacts that are similar in color or design. Attaining the sinister or whimsical look you desire via Halloween contacts is possible, no matter your budget. Remember that you just have to get creative and be open to alternatives.

The Black Cat Murder Mystery

Do not let a black cat cross your path. Or else you will get so unlucky that bad things will happen to you on that day. Or death may even come and that is surely something that you would want to happen. Now that is a belief that has been passed on for generations. Call it superstition. But there are people who believe in that and that is a reason why they do try to get out of harm's way by not letting a black cat cross their path. Because of this belief, black cats have become the symbol of a lot of bad things. They have often been pictured in media as the pets of witches and warlocks.

Today is the day that you should start changing that thought and start dealing with black cats. Do this in the form of a murder mystery party that has been given the title Brie, Bullet And The Black Cat. And as they say, anything that has a black cat in it is not going to be very boring. After all, you get to think just what happened to a person in your party and you also get to think if it is worth solving. How about if no matter how much you try, the black cat who may be a witness will never tell you what happened, and the case may never be solved?

Now this game is set in the year 1942. The scene has you being invited for dinner. The dinner happens at the Deputy Mayor of Casablanca's official home. There is, of course, a guest of honor and that is the greatest mime artist of France who still lives. But this guest of honor does not arrive at the dinner and it is later found out that he has been murdered. This game is about finding out who killed this artist. And you should be able to find out who did it by the end of the evening (or the dinner party). It may sound really difficult but it sure is going to be fun playing detective with your friends.

Ten to twelve people can play this game. So you can gather your friends or your family to have a murder mystery party right at your own home or anywhere you would want it to happen. The whole kit comes with the things that you will need to set up the party and all of what you will need to be in character.

Tips to Baby Care - Things You Should Know

Wonderful moment has arrived - you had a baby! Now what? Caring for your baby is a skill, lucky us it can be easily acquired and learned. Baby care and nurturing is going to fill your days for the first few month to the maximum, and here are some tips to help you reduce stress and make parenting more enjoyable!

  • Talking to, touching, and holding your new baby in the delivery room is good for you and your baby.
  • This is a wonderful time to start breastfeeding. Tell your care giver not to let anyone else feed your baby so that your baby will only get your breast milk.
  • Your health care giver will examine your baby right after birth, checking appearance and color, reflexes, breathing, heart rate, and activity to see whether your baby needs any special care.
  • Ask to have your newborn placed beside you in bed. Touch and hold your baby, and get to know how your baby feels.
  • Your baby may look different from the way you expected. Ask the hospital staff if you have questions about the way your baby looks.
  • Ask the staff to show you how to take your baby's temperature and read the thermometer.
  • All infants should be protected against hepatitis B. Some doctors recommend the first shot be given before going home from the hospital.
  • You should take your baby to see the doctor when your baby is about 1 week old unless you are told to come in sooner. Call your baby's doctor right after your baby is born for an appointment.

Before you and your baby leave the hospital, a few drops of blood will be taken from your baby's heel to check for some rare problems.

You will need a car safety seat (marked "federally approved") to bring your baby home. It is the law-your baby must always be in an approved safety seat when traveling in a car, van, or truck. Ask your health care giver, the hospital where you deliver, or health department about programs that loan federally approved car safety seats.

If you or the baby's father have any questions about how to pick up, hold, feed, bathe, diaper, or dress your baby, ask the hospital staff to help you. Your new baby needs all of the love and comfort you can give. You cannot love a baby too much. Your entire family can share in the joy of this love.

Caring for your baby at home ...

Most newborn babies spend most of their time sleeping and eating. You want to make sure that baby has a safe place to sleep and is put to sleep in a safe position.

A safe crib will have slats no more than 2 3/8 inches apart and corner posts less than 5/8 inch high above the rails.

Baby should sleep on a firm mattress that fits tightly in the crib, cradle or bassinet.

Do not put pillows, comforters or other soft padded materials in the bed under the baby.

Put healthy infants to sleep on their backs or sides.

Keep the sides of crib raised when baby is sleeping in it.

Try to keep sleeping newborns away from pets, other children and large overstuffed toys.

Don't let people smoke around your baby. Your baby's lungs are delicate. Babies are not as resistant to respiratory infections as their parents.

Hopefully these simple tips will help you enjoy your new responsibilities to its fullest and fill your days with joy, not stress.

How to Start Beekeeping - Deciding Upon Honeybees

If you want to start beekeeping as a hobby or as a home-based business, you need to decide which kind or variety of honeybee to purchase. Honeybees domesticated in Europe and in North America all belong to the several subspecies of the Apis mellifera, or Western Honeybee.

Some honeybee breeding companies selectively breed and hybridize subspecies of the Western Honeybee to produce desirable qualities such as disease and parasite resistance, good honey production, reduced swarming, prolific breeding, and gentleness. The drawback to this practice is that subsequent generations of hybrid bees generally have a tendency to increased aggressiveness and defensiveness.

Honeybees in North America are, for the most part, descendants of bees brought from Europe by early settlers in the 1600s. These bees adapted fine to surroundings in North America, and nowadays both the wild and domesticated honeybee colonies in the United States are descendants of European honeybees.

European settlers also brought bees to South America, but they did not adapt as well to the tropical climate there. Domesticated European honeybees in most South American countries require intensive managed. Because of this, in 1956, researchers imported honeybees from Africa into Brazil. The African bees grew and started colonizing South America and hybridizing with European honeybees to create what is known today as the 'Africanized' honeybee.

Africanized honeybees soon started to displace the European bees and to spread, and today every country in South and Central America has established populations of these honeybees.

Africanized honeybees reached the United States in October 1990 and have interbred with European honeybees. This variety of honeybee tends to be considerably more aggressive and protective of its hives than the European honeybee, causing a degree of concern among U.S. farmers and beekeepers.

The most common European bee in the United States is the docile 'Italian honeybee'. The benefits of this kind of bees are gentleness, high honey yield, low swarming tendency and realistic disease opposition. An undesirable feature of Italian honeybees is that they retain larger populations within the hive in the winter and thus need larger amounts of winter stores.

The 'Russian honeybee' is other honeybee variety that is raised in the U.S., they are docile, reasonably disease resistant and capable to sustain both hot and cold temperatures.

The backbone of the honeybee culture in the U.S. is the European honeybee, which, apparently, has started vanishing at a rapid and alarming rate. Some people believe that the Africanized honeybee might "... someday be the salvation of our [U.S.] beekeeping industry." In parts of the Southwestern United States today, beekeepers are already successfully raising Africanized honeybees. In parts of the Southwestern United States today, beekeepers are already successfully raising Africanized honeybees.

Deciding Upon Honeybees - Summary
?Before deciding to buy honeybee, keep following chief features in mind: quantity of honey creation, swarming routines, disease resistance and degree of fierceness.

?In selecting how to procure the honeybees to start your beekeeping activity, remember to consider not only price and shipment cost, but also guarantees offered by suppliers and their reputation - especially if you decide to purchase your new honeybees online.

?Note that a single healthy hive can house about 40 to 45 thousand bees. Change the quantity of bees you obtain according to the number of hives you have.

?Keep in mind that you must have your bees prepared to move into the hives by early April.

?Most importantly, make every effort to get your bees locally if at all possible. If this is not an option, contact local beekeepers to help you decide on which bees to get. Beekeeping depends on climate and other geographical fundamentals, and local beekeepers who know the surroundings in your area l know what works best - and what will not work.

Common Sense Safety Tips For a Safe Holiday Season in and Around Your Home

Common sense safety tips for a safe holiday season in and around your home. The upcoming holiday season will be a joyous occasion for millions around the world, and carries with it responsibility for home owners to help ensure home safety. The months of November, December and January are always the largest for home related fires and a number of these could be prevented by following some simple safety guidelines and planning ahead to make sure your home is protected.

Homeowners who are planning to place exterior lights and electronic decorations from their homes should thoroughly inspect the electrical wiring and connections to make certain there are no frayed or damaged parts that could cause an electrical spark with water. Securely fasten lights to trees or gutters and avoid dangling electrical lines that could become a walking hazard. Electrical lines should be connected to exterior grade extension cords and ideally routed into an outside electric box that has a separate fuse, try to limit the number of light strings to no more than three strings per line. Electrical lights should not be left on all night and should be turned off when the home owner is not at home to monitor.

Your homes interior can also present many potential fire safety concerns. Purchasing a real holiday tree is a tradition for many and choosing the right type of tree can help keep your family safe. When you start shopping for a tree it is important to look for trees that have a strong green color. A good way to check for the dryness of a tree is to examine the needles and look for discoloration, if you are easily able to pull the needles off of a tree, this is a signal that the tree is likely dried out and poses a potential fire hazard. The needles from the tree should be soft and not easily breakable with your fingers. The base of the tree should be sticky and have some resin. If you are going to a tree farm where you can cut down your own tree, this eliminates a number of areas of concerns, but be certain to choose a tree that is appropriate in size for your home. The holiday season should be filled with joy, following a few practical ideas can help ensure you make it through the holidays without any self produced fire work displays.

Tips For Buying Your New Baby's First Bathtub

Are you having a baby? There are many things to consider and many things to buy. However, one thing you don't want to forget is your baby's bathtub. Your baby needs a bathtub so you can bathe your baby safely. Here are a few tips that can help you out as you buy your new baby's first bathtub.

First of all, make sure that the backing is slip resistant on the tub. This way your baby can't easily slip down into the water, which could be dangerous.

You also want to ensure that the baby bathtub you purchase is made out of plastic that is sturdy and thick. This way it doesn't buckle when you put the bath water and the baby into the tub.

Ensure that the tub you choose has a smooth edge as well. You don't want any rough edges that could end up cutting your baby.

It's nice to find a bathtub for your baby that has some storage spots. This makes it easy for your to store the soap and your shampoo so you have easy access to it when you are giving your baby a bath.

You'll also want to make sure that you avoid products that have a foam cushion. While you may think this is comfortable for your baby, they could pull the foam apart and try to eat it, which would end badly, so just skip that cushion.

After you pick out your baby's first bathtub, make sure that you never let your baby stay unattended in that tub. In just seconds your baby should drown, so make sure you are always there while they are getting a bath.

The Pedal Ride On Car As a Learning Tool

Have you heard this? "There is nothing you can know that can't be known." These are the words of wisdom from the Beatles and there have never been truer words spoken today. Back to the question, is there any type of real educational value with a pedal ride on car? Is there some reason why any child needs to learn how to ride a pedal car toy? For sure the answer is a definite, YES!

Whatever your child is doing, playing is a key ingredient in the learning process. Not only are there physical exercises when playing with a ride on car but may mental ones too. Learning the different reactions of the pedal car will instill the sense of reasoning and what needs to be done to get that reaction. This will help to discover many new skills. In short, it introduces physics into the little tyke's life without them even knowing how to use the word.

It stimulates role-playing skills that can be honed and used in later life as they become farmers or firemen with their pedal car toys and learn to become someone else and allow their imaginations to soar to new heights.

A pedal ride on car will increase hand and eye coordination for your child and as we all know, this is required in all facets of life from sports to daily activities.

Having a steering wheel on the pedal car toy will help the child to simulate an adult driving a car, which in turn will help make them better drivers as their retention rate will be more advanced. Your child will have a leg up on the other kids as he moves into driver's education and begins to operate a real car.

It will get them prepared for that special day in all children's lives, getting their first bike. Now is the time to learn proper hand signals and mobilization by using the pedals. This will be a big help when it's time to advance to a two wheel bicycle.

Many children receive their very first ride on toy between the ages of three and six; these are the informative years. They learn very rapidly, which in turn, helps them to prepare for the next step in their learning of life.

Containers For a Windowsill Herb Garden

Growing and maintaining a windowsill herb garden is a wonderful way to add vibrancy to the appearance of a home. When planning the garden, there are some questions one must ask beyond which type of herbs to plant. One such question will be "How can I make my windowsill big enough to accommodate a garden?" Even if the home has no windowsills to speak of, that doesn't mean it's impossible to have an herb garden gracing the windowsills. Another question would be "Which type of container should I use?" A traditional and beautiful option would be to use a window box but it might be surprising to learn that there are actually endless possibilities and many of them are right in front of you. As long as you know how to make your container herb friendly, almost any type of container will do!

When it comes to choosing containers for a window garden, one of the biggest determining factors will be the size of the windowsill itself. If you find that yours is too small to accommodate a garden, there are a few things than can be done to remedy the situation. Firstly, an extender can be purchased online or at a store. This should be big enough to hold several pots or planters. Another option would be to screw a finished wood board that's about 1" X 6" to the existing board of the windowsill. If these options are not viable because of an altogether lack of windowsills, some freestanding shelves can be placed in front of your window of choice.

An herb garden planted inside a window box brings unmatched charm to a home's appearance and can make a garden the talk of the neighborhood. One may think that all window boxes are made from wood or metal but these days you can find window boxes made from lightweight materials such as PVC, plastic and resin. The benefit of owning a window box manufactured from one of these "modern-day" materials is that the garden will have a stronger, more durable home that won't need as much maintenance. A quick search online using the term "window box" is helpful way to begin the research process.

A window box is a beautiful option but might not match a home's appearance or design. That doesn't mean that typical, run of the mill pots or containers are the final answer for a windowsill herb garden. There really is an abundance of interesting house-hold items just waiting for new life as a creative garden container. It's time to turn your home upside down from your kitchen cupboards to your attic and basement... and every place in between. Have you thought of using miniature wooden crates? How about simple ceramic buckets? Or, if you're into a rustic appeal, little galvanized buckets will do the trick. Old milk cans or small wooden toolboxes also offer unique alternatives. My personal favorite for my window gardens are antique breadboxes. If you don't find anything at home, plan a fun field trip to a local antique store. You're bound to find something perfect.

Almost any type of container will do the trick but make sure that its herb friendly. First of all, try not to use anything that's rusty. Second, all plants need a container with suitable drainage. Once you drill holes into the bottom of the container, add a layer of small pebbles or bark chips. Aside from drainage, this will also provide your plants with aeration. With a little imagination, you'll have the perfect containers for your windowsill herb garden in no time!

Children Are Well Into the Game of Life - Maybe You Screwed Up and What to Do Now

As can be easily shown, we never know how life will unfold. The twists and turns of life look quite different than back in those early years of baby bottles and diapers and Christmas morning. Many things happened that surprised us. And in some cases the parent might feel he or she didn't do quite the job they wished they had done in raising their children. The weight of life can vary significantly on any person, but one thing for sure, nothing could ever erase the love that is there yet it might show up as a missing.

I know someone who attempted to strangle his child out of anger and he's in prison now, in and out for short periods of time mostly for alcohol and drugs use. He doesn't see his 20 year old but on a rare occasion. We all know stories of one sort or another where parents no longer see their children because there is so much animosity between them. The children don't want to see them anymore or the parents would rather not see them than experience their feelings of guilt or shame or failure for not being all they really wanted to be for their children. You know the love is so deep and the hurt is so strong that they can not cross that chasm between where there are and what they'd have to do to mend it. And in the process they might fail and suffer that painful loss once again.

This is not an uncommon occurrence. At some level all parents have at least one or two deep regrets in the raising of their children. And still some have significantly more. There is something really great about a parent that can teach a child the importance of letting go of the mistakes they themselves have made. Sooner or later they might have children of their own. Children believe they will be different in raising their own, without realizing either way they are acting out of a resistance they still might harbor for their parents.

We learn a great deal from our parents. I'm sure you've heard someone vow how they would never bring up their kids the way their parents raised them. Well more often than not the way their parents raised them will influence the way they bring up their own child. If you have learned to resist your parents, you will teach your child how to resist without even knowing it.

The emotional knots developed between a parent and child can be untied by you. The struggling parents hold their end of the rope and by working to free themselves from the emotions they can produce miracles in their relationship with their children.

A dad who doesn't see his daughter because it is too painful, because his love for her is so strong, and feels he has been an 'unworthy' father, only needs to realize that the knot that is in him is costing his daughter or son much joy. It is knotted in them as well and untying it allows the flow of freedom and joy. It does not mean there must be close ties between one another but there should be a peace between one another, knowing the love is there. That is the beginning and from that point on you can move in a more joyful direction. That is a wise aim.

You can even be in prison and maybe never have the possibility of seeing or even speaking to your child again but you can allow yourself to give up focusing on the identity self, that piece in the game, the Scotty Dog if you will, and focus instead on the joy of life. Who you are as your divine self is the joy and love and kindness that is at the heart of why you can even feel as you do.

Your ability to do so will inevitably show your child the wisdom in raising children in an authentic way. It can demonstrate the hands on life experience that letting go of ones unworkable choices in life are better than carrying self blame and resentment. These are usually very powerful emotions as they are rooted in the deepest love one can experience, the love between children and their parents. Negative emotions should be let go of, released. Your hanging onto them in no way can free them up. In fact it is counter productive. Grand children learn by feeling, they know when there is discord there.

As a parent, do not act out of how you think your child will react. You are the center of the emotions you are experiencing. If the emotion is other than what you desire, look and see what it is you do wish to feel. At first it may even be painful to see that, so reach for the next better feeling thought you can, even if it's 'perhaps one day it will be better', or 'I am willing to have it all resolved', or if you are religious, 'I will allow Jesus to show me the way'.

If you willfully hold onto the past, the emotional memories will remain the reality. Instead look for all the moments that were joyful, that had smiles and laughter. Feel them, don't let them go. Know there is resolution; know that you will both end up couched in the sea of joy. Bring no pain to the present. Enjoy the recollection of the happy times, for what you give your attention to you make real.

When you are caught in your negative emotions ask yourself if you are willing to release them. Begin asking yourself with the smallest of items those things you are grateful for and appreciate about yourself, and keep reaching for better feeling thoughts as there is no value in entertaining anything less.
