Seven Top Tips For a Successful Vegetable Plot

More and more people are being turned on to the benefits of growing their own food.

What was once a pastime for the "knit your own sandals" brigade is now an activity for the masses and to prove the point, waiting lists for allotments in the UK are the longest they have ever been.

You first battle then, is to find a suitable piece of land for your plot.

Once you have acquired your potential larder, you will want to make it as productive as you can and here's how:

1. Keep your plot as environmentally friendly as you can. Instead of using new plastic plant pots, either re-use old ones or better still, make your own pots from old newspapers which will eventually compost down into the soil.

2. Realise that a 250 square metre plot can produce almost three quarters of a ton of food each year - that's a potential saving of ?500!

3. Weeds are very powerful - your plot may be over run in a single season. Make sure that any unplanted areas are covered with some sort of membrane - old carpets are good for this.

4. The soil is your friend and provider. Make sure that you keep feeding your plot with the nutrients your crops will need. Make your own compost and feed it back into the soil.

5. Protect your plot from pests. Slugs, snails, caterpillars, birds, mice and rabbits can all decimate a plot in very short order. Try to work with nature to control and deter these pests and a bountiful harvest is yours for the taking.

6. Don't go berserk when sowing seeds or you'll end up with feast then famine. Spread your sowing over several weeks to ensure a steady supply of fresh produce. Remember you aren't able to irradiate your harvested crops to preserve them in the same way as supermarkets - it's always best to eat your veg just after it comes out of the ground.

7. Don't lose heart. A vegetable plot can be hard work - weeds, pests, and the climate in your area can be formidable foes. Start simple and adopt a little and often approach and you'll find vegetable growing hooks you forever.

Is GI Joe the New Trend For Kids Halloween Costumes?

Halloween is one of the most special occasions for kids to show off and to amaze their buddies with their gorgeous new costumes. This is why they wouldn't wear last year's suit for anything in the world. Kids inspire themselves from movies and cartoons, they dream of becoming as powerful as G.I.Joe characters, to be wise and strong like Superman or to save America like who knows what else popular hero.

For 2009, the list of most wanted costumes for kids was enriched with some new entries which promise to become the best sellers of the year, next to he Michael Jackson costumes which are in big vogue since the pop star's death, this summer. Here's what your kid would most probably want to wear this October:

  • G.I. Joe Costumes: The Rise of Cobra characters are in the top of all favorites: Duke, Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, the fearless warriors
  • Transformers: Optimus Prime, Megatron and Bumblebee are two more additions that look really cool and very realistic above all others, and are preferred by many kids
  • Wolverine: not new, but new costumes are available featuring this popular hero of so many kids

Whatever parents may wish for their kids, maybe it's better to listen to them and buy them exactly what they want, because Halloween is a very good occasion for fun. All costumes fall more or less within the same price range, so if you're going to spend that money anyway, why not get something your kids will remember for years?

Who? When? Where? Things You Should Know And Include In The Baby Shower Invitations

The invitation to a baby shower needs to include all of the obvious facts about when and where the event will take place and who it is for. Be sure to put the date by which you want guests to RSVP. This is extremely important if the shower is being held at a hotel or restaurant or if you are having it catered. You will need to give an accurate count of the number of guests to the representatives from these places so that they can prepare accordingly. They will most likely require you to give a guaranteed amount, so you want to be as close to the right number of people, since you will be paying for it, even if they don抰 all show up.

You should send out the invitations 2 weeks before the RSVP date and the RSVP date should probably be at least 2 maybe 3 weeks before the baby shower. This gives the guests a month or more to make sure they are available on that date and to have time to figure out what to do for a gift. This also gives you time to really bring everything together and know basically how many guests you will have. Obviously a lot of planning will have already been done by the time you send the invitations

You also want to include in the invitation anything the guests need to bring or to think of in advance if you have any special activities that require the giving of well wishes, or words of advice, or anything of that nature.

In addition, the invitations you send should visually tell the invited guests the theme of the shower. It will help them to know how to dress. If the shower is being held at the beach or in the evening at someone抯 home the attire will obviously be different.

Other information that is nice to know is the gender of the baby. If the shower is being held after the baby is born, then you can include the name, birth date, and other facts such as time of birth, length, and weight of the baby. Even if the baby is not yet born, many parents have ultrasounds at around 20 weeks into the pregnancy and can and often do find out the sex of the baby. This will help guests select gifts appropriate for boys, girls, or even twins.

Invited guests that will be coming in from out of town will appreciate additional information that should be included in the invitation. You can include details on surrounding hotels, or information about who they will be staying with if other family members will be putting them up. Hotels will usually print out cards with maps, directions and what to tell the reservations desk in order to get your prearranged group rate. Also include directions to the exact location where the shower is actually going to be held. This applies to all guests who may not know the area well.

The Guest List (Yikes!)

Deciding who to invite to the baby shower can be more difficult than you think. You may face one of two problems: There are too many people to invite, and your budget, room size, etc. are limiting the numbers. Or, the expectant parents are far from family and new to the area, so making a nice party for them means inviting people they may not know as well and therefore, you may not get a good turnout.

Let抯 look at the first scenario. If the couple is popular, both work and have lots of extended family around, it may be difficult to shower them with just one event. In this case you will need to consider locations that can accommodate a large group, such as the beach, a park, or large function hall. Also, you may find budget restraints mean asking for more help and donations of food, decorations, invitations, etc. Here is where multiple hosts can work together to share the workload and expense.

In the case of a smaller group, a home setting will feel warm, inviting and intimate. Even if only 4 or 5 ladies show up, it can be a fun event to celebrate the birth. This might be the right situation for a girl抯 night out at a restaurant where everyone also brings a gift, or a movie night at home watching a real 揷hick flick.?The new mom will know that there are other women around who will be there to celebrate and support her in her new role as a mom. Also consider inviting husbands to round out your guest list and make the event more festive.

If you are unsure of who to invite you can always ask the parents-to-be for the names and addresses of family members, close friends and business associates. If you want the party to be surprise, try going to the parents of the expectant couple for ideas on who to invite. While you are compiling your guest list, you can organize the names by categories such as Family, Close Friends, Work Friends, Neighborhood Friends, and Church Friends. This way, if you need to cut numbers from your list, you can keep the closer relationships separated.

With all of the details surrounding a baby shower, it is easy to forget when someone called, left a message on your voice mail or email, or just gave you a verbal RSVP in passing. A good way to keep an accurate record of who has been invited and who has responded is to use a Guest Checklist

This checklist also lets anyone involved in the planning get a good overall visual of who is coming. It will help you to not forget important guests and to give any catering facilities an accurate count for your party. It is a nice list to keep to record gifts and also if the thank you note has been sent.

Disabled and Wheelchair Gardening

Paths with a good sound even surface are almost essential in a garden if you are using walking sticks, walking aids or a wheel chair. They should be at least 3ft (two 18" slabs) wide with a turning circle large enough to turn around in. Gravel is a no no, even compacted gravel makes walking with sticks or driving your wheel chair really difficult. Remember even rivened slabs are slippery when wet or icy. Having a slight slope for water run off is a good idea.

If your garden path is going to run over different levels, gradual slopes are better than steps. Its also a good ideal to fit handrails on the slopes.

Planting

Choosing plants that wont need much maintenance will make life easier but will restrict choice and maybe all year round colour. Probably best to buy plants that are slow growing, most trees grow slowly as long as you avoid leylandii type fast growing trees. Ground cover shrubs will help keep weeds down and add interest .Low growing fruit trees give colour and the obvious benefit of the autumn harvest. If you are not sure what trees, shrubs and plants to plant it might be a good idea to fork out for a planting plan and stick to it.

Hedges are mostly fast growing and will need a lot of pruning. You might be better of with panel fencing, single panels that get damaged are easier to replace if you use slotted posts. Grow vine type vegetables like Runner beans or fragnent vines like Clematis,Climbing Rose, Honeysuckle ,Jasmine to cover the fence.

Digging and weeding.

Digging helps break up the soil and lets air into the soil and it can help to loosen weeds. Regular hoeing, light forking and adding well rotted compost from your composy heap ,make the old fashioned back breaking annual dig almost redundant. So if bending because of a disability or bad back is a problem keep it simple. Light work and often is better for your back ,your general well being and your garden. So instead of sitting in front of the television on a dry day , you could be out in your garden keeping yourself and your garden healthy.

Raised beds make digging easier but if you are digging beds at ground level using a lightweight long handled trowel or fork to turn over the soil will make it a lot easier. These are available on the net or if you still have one, your local ironmonger will sort you out.

Large Garden centers charge a lot more for them.

Digging and weeding is easier If you keep your beds narrow or accessible from both sides, If you install raised beds, if you have retaining walls in your garden cultivate the area that runs along behind the wall, if you use specially designed gardening tools, if you lay down a weed suppressing membrane and plant through slits cut in the material, If your garden soil is clay keep adding grit sand.

Weeds.

Getting rid of annual and perennial weeds keeps your garden beds tidy and your plants healthy. Weeds take up the moisture, nutrients your plants need to thrive Once again little and often is best and more enjoyable. A overgrown weedy garden is a daunting sight and you may prefer to stay in front of the television. So little and often especially if you have a bad back or disability that stops you bending easily is the way to keep on gardening.

Watering

During long dry spells watering is a time consuming must but can be made easier if you have a disability or bad back that makes bending difficult. A light plastic, flat sided watering can is easier than a round one and putting water butts and stand pipes at convenient places around the garden make watering saves your back.

Grouping your containers together and placing saucers under them, mulching the soil and watering in the evening, when there is less evaporation all save water and time. If you haven't got stand pipes in convenient spots around the garden leave the hose pipe rolled out during long hot spells weather.

Sowing seeds

Save money and grow plants from seed, you will also have spare plants to share or sell at your local car boot. I get a lot of satisfaction from growing from seed, sometimes it dos'nt work out but even at my age its still one big learning curve. You can grow seeds direct into the garden or in the greenhouse, Its easier on your bad back if you can sow direct into the place in your garden beds where the plants will grow on, especially if your beds are designed as narrow reachable borders or raised beds as we have talked about in this article. Mixing fine seed with sand makes it easier to sow if your hands are a bit stiff.

When and what to sow tips can be found on my simplelife and gardening tip pages.

More gardening tips for gardeners with a bad back or disability that makes bending difficult on my disabled gardening page.

Physical growth, mental growth, intellectual growth is the main concern for parents. Parents are keenly interested in the perfect growth of the child. It is better to handle the behaviors of the toddlers.

Parents must make rules. The purpose of making the rules is that the kids must be able to stick to their limits. There are some areas which need proper attention that will ultimately affect the excellent growth of the child. Behavior counts a lot. The social interaction is said to be done in a good way if a child behaves in a good way. The training of a child at home and school requires proper attention so that the child learn ways that how to talk with elders, love younger, talk to parents and teachers, how to act at play grounds, how to sit at dining table, how to communicate the demands toward parents and most of the important that how the child behaves in all religious, cultural and social events. These are all habits and disciplines that are learned by the child observing the environment but there are some chances that he might pick the wrong act but why to worry because there are rules that are made for the kids so that while doing any wrong act they remember their limits. These tips will help the parents to bring up a happy and confident child.

Recent Bassinet Recall by Consumer Product Safety Commission

Multiple government and private organizations are responsible for monitoring of the safety standards of baby furnitures, including U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This results in frequent recalls of childrens products, however, awareness of these recalls by the owners are of paramount importance for effective avoidance of dangers caused by these recalled items. This prompted me to present this article in this forum with the hope of reaching someone who may not otherwise visit the CPSC recall web site.

On December 30, 2009 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and Dorel Juvenile Group Inc., of Columbus, Ind., announced a voluntary recall of the Safety 1st Disney Care Center Play Yard and Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard baby bassinets. This will involve approximately 213,000 units. The play yards are portable and were sold with a bassinet attachment and a built-in changing station. Model numbers 05025, 05026, 05037, 05088 and 05350 are included in this recall. The model number is printed on a sticker on one of the support legs underneath the play yard. "Safety 1st" or "Eddie Bauer" are printed near the bottom of the fabric sides of the play yards. CPSC recognized the following safety hazzard: The one piece metal bars supporting the floorboard of the bassinet attachment can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface. This can pose a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation. No infant death or hospitalization has been reported. These bassinets are made in China and imported in the United States by Dorel Juvenile Group Inc., of Columbus, Ind.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. CPSC announces recalls of products that present a significant risk to consumers either because the product may be defective or violates a mandatory standard issued by CPSC. Please make it a habit to check the recall list at the CPSC web site periodically, especially for childrens furniture and play items if you are parents or caregiver of young children.

Using a Baby Heartbeat Monitor Can Be Good For Health

The recent invention of baby heartbeat monitors provides modern mothers with benefits that were unavailable to mothers even twenty years ago. Fetal dopplers allow pregnant women to locate and listen to the beating heart of an unborn baby without having to visit the doctor. This allows women to not only share the joy and wonder of a new life with family and friends, but it also offers various health benefits that may not be quite obvious at first.

The regular use of a baby heartbeat monitor has been linked to a marked decrease in stress in the mother. During pregnancy, it is common for women to frequently worry about the developing baby, such as whether it is okay, whether it is developing properly, or whether there are other problems present that she cannot immediately detect. Using a baby heartbeat monitor can provide a sort of early detection system for fetal stress, as well as other developmental problems that may arise. Though by no means definitive or a guarantee, an abnormal heartbeat is generally a powerful indicator that something is wrong.

Fetal dopplers and other similar devices are by no means a replacement for doctors, hospitals, or proper prenatal care. If you are basing your decision on whether to purchase a baby heart beat monitor based purely on the potential health benefits, it is important to state again that, at beast, they afford you with an early warning system for potential problems. A very fast heartbeat (for a fetus) or a very slow heartbeat is a definite sign that you should at least visit your doctor to make sure that there are no problems developing.

It is important for an expectant mother to keep her stress levels as low as possible. A lot of worry can crop up during those long months of pregnancy, and the regular use of a fetal Doppler can help keep at least some of the more unfounded worry at bay. Aside from stress relief, a baby heartbeat monitor provides mothers, friends, and family the ability to share in the joy of a new life coming into the world, and the sound of that tiny heartbeat is like a drum announcing its coming arrival.

Trying to Conceive? Some Proven Tips to Conceive Fast

Having a child is a pivotal moment is any couple's life. When a couple makes this decision they usually are ready and do not want to waste any time. However, trying to conceive a child is not always easy for first time parents. So many people think if they just stop using protection conception will happen.

This happens for some, but for most, conception takes several tries and lots of work. The biggest element of getting pregnant is the woman's ovulation. Once an egg is released into the uterus, it is ready to be fertilized if male sperm has been deposited in the uterus, the sperm and egg will join for conception.

When trying to conceive it is most effective to have intercourse within several days of ovulation. Sperm remains active in the female uterus for three days, therefore intercourse a few days prior to ovulation could result in a pregnancy as well as having sex on the day of ovulation. In regular women you will ovulate on day 14.

This means two weeks before you next period and two weeks after your last period: right in the middle. However, many women have an irregular cycle so defining fertility by a calendar day is not always the most accurate.

Another option to determine when you ovulate is by keeping track of your body temperature. Female body temperature is at its highest just before ovulation. Considering sperm remains alive in the female body for a few days, the days when your body is at its highest temperature are probably your most fertile days.

You can also determine when you ovulate with testing strips which can be obtained from a doctor or drugstore. These tests have proven fairly accurate for testing ovulation if the above methods don't work effectively. The best thing you can do for yourself when trying to conceive is care for your body.

Try to have healthy eating habits, exercise, get rest, and do not overstress yourself. You must create a healthy environment for a fetus if you want to be successful in getting pregnant. There are many different methods to make you more fertile, and these have helped others in the past. However, for most people, following these guidelines and being healthy will be sufficient in conceiving fast and naturally.

Follow Your Passion and Grow the Roses That YOU Really Want to Grow

If one wishes to grow the roses he or she loves the most, it is important to learn as much about them as you can.

It's simply not enough to say you love them.

To grow the roses that you're passionate about, you really do need to understand everything about that particular variety. From the type of soil it uses, to the best fertilizer, to the frequency of watering, right down to how to prune the plants. You really must know how to grow the roses the right way. One mishap in your technique and all your hard work could be for naught.

Now, let's say you are an experienced rose gardener, and you can honestly say that rose gardening is in your veins. Good for you, but then, just because you know how to raise a few different types doesn't automatically make you an expert.

Just like a mechanic I once knew, he was, bar none, the best truck mechanic I have ever seen.

People went to see him from everywhere to have their trucks serviced. Unfortunately, his fame and success went to his head and he started to proclaim that he was an expert, not just in trucks, but everything with wheels.

Imagine his surprise when he was faced with a repair order for a Maserati. The same goes with rose gardening, just because you managed to raise Knockout roses, without having a single plant die on you, doesn't make you a guru.

So what should you prepare for before you start to grow the roses you love most?

First step, of course, is to make a list of all the various kinds that you wish to grow. It doesn't matter if your list contains just one type of rose, or several; the main purpose of listing them down is because you might want to take down notes regarding each type of rose.

When the list is complete, it's time to start doing your research. Read all you can about all the types of roses you wish to grow, from the perfect soil mix for each type, to the right way of picking them.

Know which types thrive in the climate you live in, and if a certain type you really love doesn't seem to thrive in your area, know how to make them flourish or, if it's too much of a burden, replace it with another type of rose.

It is important to know all that you can about each type of rose you chose, and take down notes, take your time to really learn how to grow the roses that interest you the most.

If you chose several varieties, I doubt you'd remember all you've read about each type so your notes will provide a quick reminder come middle of the year. When you think you are ready, it is just a simple matter of deciding on whether to plant them in your garden or in individual pots for raising them indoors.

Supplies are readily available so that's not much of a problem either.

Though it may seem like hard work to grow the roses you want to raise, the only thing that requires hard work is the research. Once you know how to take care of the flowers you picked, everything is smooth sailing as long as you know what you are doing.

Remember, it's not all about how good you are as a gardener that will make your roses flourish, what really matters is how passionate and dedicated you are.

RC Cars - Boys and Toys

Any type of model car that utilises a remote control system is known as an RC (radio controlled) car. But for those interested, there are actually two kinds of these RC cars available on the market today. The first is the toy version that has been designed for children, and the second is the hobby-grade version which is the choice of enthusiasts from adolescence and over.

The two are similar only in the fact that they represent models of real life cars and that they are both controlled via radio control. But the differences between the two are easy to distinguish. Whereas the toy model is just a solid plastic representation of the vehicle involved, the hobby-grade models are true-to-life representations, down to their individual parts, and for all intents and purposes have been constructed in the same manner as a real vehicle. And the hobby-grade models require the same service and maintenance that would be required for a normal operating vehicle.

Hobby-grade RC cars, which we shall just refer to as RC cars from now on in this article, are powered in a variety of ways. Some are electrically powered, others petrol and yet others still nitro powered. And it is the sheer complexity of these models, or their intricacy if you like, that appears to be the main attraction for males of all ages. Plus the fact that they can be used for racing and big boys just love to race things! Deciding on what type of RC run car he wants though, is a decision not to be taken lightly. All types of propulsion will have both benefits and disadvantages to weigh up.

Good examples of this are the fact an electric RC car is lighter than a fuel run one, but the fuel run one will be faster than the electric one. But with all things being equal, because these models are so intricate, it wouldn't be difficult for an enthusiast to change his electric powered RC car into a fuel run one, and vice versa.

As most RC cars are used for racing, you will find that more often than not they have been fitted with more powerful radio control systems which are ideal for controlling the vehicle from greater distances.

Regardless as to what RC car an enthusiast eventually decides to go with, one thing is for sure and this is that it will require a lot of maintenance, a lot of repair, and a lot of upgrading over time so that it maintains its usability factor. Although it may appear an arduous task to own an RC car for somebody looking into the hobby from the outside, enthusiasts will soon put these people straight by professing their love for the hobby and the fact that it is also a very rewarding experience to see their models race - and hopefully win.

Serving Wine at Holiday Parties

Hosting a party can bring about a great deal of stress. You may find this true for any kind of party, but it seems to be particularly true for a party thrown around the holidays. For some reason, the holidays are a time when parties aspire to be a little grander; they need to have tastier food, more elegant alcohol, and those who are hosting it need to wear red and call each other by names like, 揇earest.?

While a holiday party is something you will likely want to throw well ?hoping to impress your friends, your relatives, and your next door neighbor whose front lawn animatronics nativity scene makes your decorations look inferior ?you will also want to save some room on your credit cards for all your holiday shopping.

This may seem to pose a bit of a problem, as if you are forced to make the choice of throwing a great party or buying presents for your children, children who ?as they contact social services and attempt to get on Oprah ?probably won抰 be too forgiving if the holiday season finds you empty handed. However, throwing a great party doesn抰 have to drain your bank account; there are ways to have a party that is both festive and frugal. Because alcohol is generally one of the most pricy party expenses, buying wisely is the first step in throwing a party that will leave both your social circle, and your children, still talking to you.

Have a Variety

Some people are under the impression that hosting a party involves purchasing the most expensive wine they can find, wine that would impress even the most seasoned connoisseur. However, when it comes down to it, the price of wine is not nearly as important as the variety.

Holiday parties typically consist of a large spread of food. From the p鈚?to the cheese balls, the months of November and December are like a giant buffet. Because of this, it抯 important to cover your bases and purchase wine that is adaptable, wine that all types of food consider 揺asy to get along with.?The simplest w! ay to do this is to cover all your bases by purchasing both red wine and white wine.

For red wine, Merlots, Shiraz, and Cabernets are all good choices, with white wine抯 best bet being Chardonnay, though a nice Alsatian Riesling is also a great choice. While there are certain vintages that are expensive, it抯 relatively easy to find bottles that aren抰 extremely high priced; with some searching, or asking the clerk at the local liquor store for help, you can buy red and white wines that won抰 take away your ability to go holiday shopping, leaving you, ultimately, to holiday shoplift instead.

Serve White Zinfandel

When choosing a wine to serve at a party, White Zinfandel is an extremely popular choice. This is simply because people drink it up. A chilled beverage, White Zinfandel is light, sweet and low in alcohol content, which makes it a popular choice for folks who are driving. One of the least inexpensive, with many bottles costing around five dollars, White Zinfandel is a preferred choice of many party hosts everywhere.

A Box is Your Friend

There is an unfavorable stigma attached to box wine, like lawyers or people obsessed with Dungeons and Dragons. But, box wine is often a party staple. This is because it抯 inexpensive, it抯 convenient, the leftovers won抰 spoil, and even if you don抰 enjoy the taste of it, many others do.

Box wine was once the laughing stock of the wine world: people often equated it with cheap wine, it was only purchased by those who had a cash flow problem, and cases of Pinot Noirs were often found pointing and laughing, mocking the box wine from the comfort of their glass bottles. However, over the years this stigma has gone down the drain, and the box wine of today now stores a variety of wine, including wines that are premium.

Appease the Wine Folk
While White Zinfandel and box wine may quench the thirst of some, many wine connoisseurs prefer something a little different, believing that drink! ing anyt hing other than a unique holiday wine is the equivalent of drinking from the water bowl in the Christmas tree stand. Because of this, it抯 a good idea to have a couple of bottles of something a little interesting.

A fun holiday wine that is great to serve at a party is the Lady Bug Red Cuvee V. Not only is it visually appealing ?as it comes in a bottle with a green label and lady bugs all over it ?but the flavors are wonderfully fruity, containing a combination of blackberry, plum, cocoa, oak, and pepper. The wine, made up of Zinfandel, Carignane, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is sure to satisfy a wide range of wine lovers.

Take People Up on Their Offers

It is etiquette for those attending a party to offer to bring something ?a casserole, a plate of cookies, a spinach dip. While you may have trouble accepting this gesture, thinking that you should be the one to generate all the party goods, keep in mind that many people who offer to bring something typically really want to.

People enjoy showing their gratitude and when they are able to contribute to a party, they feel as if they are given the opportunity to do just that. If a person asks you if they can bring anything, and you are stressing over the drink selection, simply request that they bring a bottle of wine. This not only assures that they will bring something they enjoy, but it also allows you to subtly shrug your shoulders and point your finger in their direction if others do not like it. That, after all, is what friends are for.

Holiday parties can be hard to plan. But, with the above tips, you should at least have the wine list taken care of, leaving you free to worry about food and d閏or instead.

More than anything, when it comes this time of year, keep in mind that the wine you serve at your holiday party shouldn抰 be that important: the holidays are a time for camaraderie, family, and love, three entities that not even the most expensive vintage can ever rival.

Understanding PCOS and Infertility in Women

Ages 15 to 44 are usually considered to be normal child bearing years, and PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition which affects approximately 1 in 10 of this age group, making PCOS infertility the most common cause of female infertility.

But what exactly is PCOS, and how are PCOS and infertility connected? PCOS is a condition which affects a woman's menstrual cycle and consequently her ability to have children. In a normal menstrual cycle, follicles develop in the ovaries, and these follicles each contain an egg. Eventually only one follicle remains and it is this which produces the egg released in ovulation. With PCOS however, insufficient female hormones are produced for ovulation. The result of this is that the follicles may grow and develop into cysts, which can show up on ultrasound as the characteristic 'string of pearls'.

The cause of PCOS is unknown and several theories exist. Women with PCOS and infertility frequently have a mother or sister with the condition, so there may be a hereditary connection, although this has not been proven. Others consider a genetic predisposition is the cause. Increasingly scientists think there may be a connection with insulin PCOS infertility. Women with PCOS have difficulty processing insulin so that too much remains in the body. This excess of insulin appears to increase production of male hormones (androgens) which leads to problems with ovulation.

A wide range of symptoms may be experienced with PCOS, although these will vary greatly with the individual concerned. The symptoms include:

æ—¾rregular period, infrequent period
æ—¾ncreased hair growth on the face, chest and back
æ—½air loss (characterized by thinning on top of head)
æ—³cne or oily skin
昗eight gain or obesity
æ—¾nsulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
æ—½igh blood pressure
昐kin tags

Treatment of PCOS and infertility is one of symptom management, and will depend on the symptoms experienced and what your fertility goals are. Treatments may include diabetes medications to treat diabetes where present, fertility medications to stimulate ovulation, and anti androgens to help with hair growth and reduce acne. Hormone levels can also be helped by weight loss.

Different women will experience PCOS in different ways. For some the symptoms may be quite mild and barely noticeable, but others may experience a wide range of symptoms. Many women become embarrassed over their appearance, others may worry about failing to conceive, and some will get depressed. In addition to the medical treatments available, various support groups exist and these can help deal with the emotional aspects of the condition.

What is a Candle Making Craft?

The candle making craft

A craft is skilled practice of some particular trade. People who perform a very particular type of skilled work are known as craftsmen or tradesmen. It usually takes several years to become knowledgeable and proficient at the craft or trade you have chosen.

You can submit your hours and do a written test to the licensing authority of your area and if you pass you will receive your trade or craft license. You will then be known as a craftsman, tradesman or Journeyman in that line of work.

Candle making is a craft and it's going to take some time to become knowledgeable and proficient. You will require time to learn how to make candles of any type and shape. You will learn by trial and error the methods to successfully add fragrances and decorations.

You will find out how to use your molds. As a craftsman you will also need to learn how to use your tools properly and effectively. Eventually you will find "your favorites" waxes or oils, and fragrances, along with decorations that you enjoy working with the most. This will be when you finally understand how to use your tools, fragrances and wax of your choice to work with. Candle making then will be very relaxing, easy and satisfying for you.

I think it would be a great idea at the start of your candle making craft to buy a note book or loose leaf binder that you can add to when needed.

Then use your book or binder for several things:

* Making a list of essential tools to buy.
* Make and inventory the items you have, or will use from the kitchen.

Add any items you purchase to your inventory.

* Make an inventory of your candle making stocks, waxes, oils, fragrances and decorations.

You should always know the value and quantity of your inventory items. This will allow your being able to know your profit margin quickly for any type of candle market you may wish to sell to.

* Record temperatures of the stove, of the wax when it is ready and the temperature of your work area.
* Treat your craft like any professional does.
* Make notes of quantities of each item used for each kind of candle you make.

This book will be a treasure for you. When you make a poor batch of candles, and have recorded all steps taken during the process of making this particular batch you can simply read this and know this one is to be done differently. The reverse is also true when you have made a fantastic run of candles your record of success will be easily repeatable.

Many, mechanics, plumbers, and electricians, carpenters, and many other craftsmen or tradesmen have put in the time to learn their craft taken the tests have been licensed. After working for someone else they decide to open up their own business.

You might want to consider going to the farmers markets, or flea markets. You might want to find out if a few business owners in your area would accept your products on consignment. With unique well-thought-out, quality products, priced well, with a good profit margin you may well find yourself with a very lucrative business that could easily place your job.

How to Use Herbs to Grow Even More Herb Plants

So now you have a beautiful herb garden but you do not have enough herbs of each kind. There are many techniques to reproduce your plants and if you didn't know, you can use herbs for growing even more plants. In this article you can learn easy ways of growing herbs and making more plants. But hey, relax! Using herbs for growing more plants is not rocket science. You just need to have lots of dedication and patience.

Grafting

Grafting is one of the major techniques for reproduction and coupling of plants and fruits. In grafting all you need is your herbs to help them reproduce. Imagine that you have a rosemary plant that has a rare type of flower and you want to have more plants with the same kind of flower. You can reproduce the same kind of plant with grafting.

In grafting, the root of an herb is the stock and the stem is the scion. So, you take a stock of any regular rosemary (or other plant you wish to graft), dig a hole on the soil and put the scion on top of the stock. The hormones in both plants will help the plant heal and the scion will be attached to the stock. Repeat this step as many times as you want to achieve the desired results.

Stem cutting

One quick and easy way to make more plants while growing your herbs in a garden is stem cutting. First understand that a plant can generate roots or stems if properly treated. Say that you have a small garden but not enough cilantro plants. Simply take the cilantro, cut the stem and replant it directly to the soil.
When you cut the stem you must plant the herb on the soil right away. If you do not plant the herb, the herb will simply die. This process is caused by plant growth hormones called auxins. These growth hormones make the plant grow roots when placed in firm soil. To increase the chances for the cutting to work, cut pieces of plants that are growing steadily and avoid using pieces of plants that are blooming.

Layering

Layering is when you cut down a new plant from the parent plant. With layering you can use herbs for growing more plants. Have you noticed that when plants are matured sometimes they have little plants growing from them? Those small plants growing from your herbs are called stolons. To reproduce plants simple detach the stolon from the parent plant and plant the stolon in fresh soil. Plant the stolon with the side of the wounded part inside the soil. If you do not do this, your plant will not make roots. Bury the plant (do not cut the plant) allow the stem to be six to twelve inches above the soil.

Growing herbs in garden exteriors or pots will be easy if you follow these simple steps. Herbs have a high tendency to reproduce and heal themselves. Simple techniques like grafting, or stem cutting will help you have a garden with plenty plants and herbs. Using herbs for growing more plants out of them can also help you save money if you are growing kitchen herbs. If you use grafting and stem cutting to make more plants you can have the number of plants that you want and you can also reproduce the best traits of each plant.

Vegetarian Thanksgiving - No Turkeys?

What comes to your mind when you first think of Thanksgiving? The big fat golden-brown turkey? To millions, a Vegetarian Thanksgiving would mean no heaps of turkey meat at their dining table to feast on, but to the turkeys it would mean freedom to LIVE.

Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks to God for blessings received during the year. It is usually a family day, celebrated with joyous reunions, feastings and prayers. Families and friends come together to enjoy the Macey抯 Thanksgiving Parade and Football. Although it is a major celebration in the United States and Canada, other countries like Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Laos, Liberia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, etc also celebrate this joyous holiday.

Vegetarian Thanksgiving is a term which has slowly become popular all over, not only with the vegetarians but also among the non vegetarians. Being veg. is a journey, not a destination - even with its back roads, detours and speed bumps. Thanksgiving used to be a vegetarian's worst nightmare, but no longer. More and more vegetarian groups are holding dinners and celebrations, and there are even caterers and food companies specializing in a wide selection of meatless alternatives.

The living and the dead! If turkeys were our companions, we would be terribly upset with the death of any one of them; but because they are "food", we are indifferent to their death. Thousands of free-range turkeys are raised in a single warehouse-like structure forced to stand on accumulated fecal waste and breathe in ammonia fumes. These turkeys are then taken to the slaughterhouse through transport containers where they are hung upside down in shackles. There they cry out in fear and pain as they await their own slaughter. Think of how much it hurts when we get a little speck in our eye, and we might understand the degree of suffering that the turkeys are been forced to endure day after day. When left the way God intended turkeys to be, they have a wonderful and close family life. It is not human to deprive them of this gift from God.

There is a lot more to explore at a thanksgiving dinner table than just turkeys. Some food items that I can suggest, which I found from some great recipe sites, would be:

APPETIZERS/STARTERS

Guacamole, a Relish plate of sliced vegetables (Crudité–Ÿ) and White wine.

MAIN COURSE

Vegan Nut Roast ?la PeTA

Ingredients:

æ…£he roast?

Two tablespoons oil or margarine

2 large onions, chopped fine

5 cloves garlic, minced

3 cups raw cashews

1 1/2 cups bread

1 cup soup stock (or water)

Salt and pepper

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

2 tablespoons lemon juice

æ…£he stuffing?

3 cups bread cubes, toasted

Two tablespoons margarine, melted but not hot

1/2 to 3/4 cup finely-chopped onion

1 cup chopped celery

1/2 teaspoon thyme

1/2 teaspoon marjoram

1/2 teaspoon sage

3 tablespoons parsley, chopped

Salt to taste

Method:

Cook the onion and garlic in the oil or margarine until tender, and remove from the heat.

Chop the cashews by hand or in a food processor; cut up the bread as well. Add the cashews and bread to the onion, then add the vegetable stock, salt and pepper, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Put half of this mixture into a small, non-stick loaf pan. Mix together all the ingredients from the second list. Put the mixture on top of the stuff in the loaf pan, and add the rest of the first mixture so that there are three layers of food in the pan. Place the pan on a baking sheet or in a larger loaf pan, and bake at 400 degrees F for half an hour. The top should be browned. Let the roast cool for a few minutes, then turn the pan over and serve the roast on a plate. Serve with gravy if desired, keeping in mind that it is a very rich dish.

Notes:

The roast will take about an hour to prepare. This recipe makes roughly six servings.

Other main courses items could be: Home-made bread, Salad, Steamed carrots and green beans, Mashed potatoes, rolls, Bread stuffing, Red wine, Vegan Bisquits, Vegan Nut Roast with Stuffing ?la PeTA, Vegan Gravy and Simple Cranberry Sauce.

DESERT

Vegan Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients:

1 350-g box of silken firm tofu, drained

1 heaping cup of cooked or canned pumpkin

1 to 1 1/4 cups brown or golden sugar, not packed tight

dash salt

4 teaspoons blended "pumpkin pie spice" OR:

1 teaspoons cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1 teaspoons nutmeg

1 pie crust

Method:

Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Blend the tofu in a food processor or with a blender until smooth and cream-like, for about four minutes. Stop the machine every once in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's blades. Add the cooked pumpkin and blend some more, again stopping the machine and scraping the mixture down. The result should be a light orange-colored paste with no lumps of tofu. Put the paste into a large mixing bowl and add the sugar, salt, and spices. Mix well and spoon it into the pie crust; decorate with cheerful shapes of leftover crust, if desired. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown. Serve warm or chilled, plain or topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes:

This pie takes about two hours to prepare. A single good-sized sugar pie pumpkin will usually yield enough material for two pies: the recipe doubles easily. The pie refrigerates and freezes well.

Other Desert items could be: hot cocoa, Vegan Pumpkin Pie and Butter Tarts.

Christmas Fruitcake Giving is a Holiday Tradition

Some comedians joke about regifting these but Christmas fruitcake giving is a time honored tradition. When properly prepared and aged fruitcake is really a tantalizing treat. Sometimes brandy or rum soaked cakes are aged for years.

This is a very old tradition going back to an English tradition that predates Christmas. There was even a version of it baked by the ancient Romans. Although the ingredients were very different they were still forms of fruit, nuts and grain. There are many different recipes for this very traditional holiday gift.

Christmas fruitcake giving is such a standard part of the history of the holiday season that it has become the subject of many jokes. This unfortunate turn of events is probably due to two problems with fruitcakes. The first is that many companies mass produce poor quality cakes which bear no resemblance to the traditional home made gift. The second problem is that Americans are basically addicted to chocolate and anyone who wastes their time with other flavors might be eating Christmas dinner in the dog house.

It is, in other words, an acquired taste. Start with the best quality fruitcakes for the introduction to this historic favorite. When they are properly prepared they are moist and very fragrant. Some recipes involve wrapping the cakes in marzipan and royal icing. Then the cakes are decorated. They are really wonderful but don't expect much from the drug store variety. Holidays are special and the cost of better ingredients is going to be higher. Just the difference in the type of rum can make a huge difference in quality.

For the sophisticated gourmand on the shopping list there is a good bet that Christmas fruitcake giving of a high quality product is a safe starting point. Use a nice gift basket with good teas to make a nicer presentation..

Bad Behavior- Naughty Step and How It Can Be Used by Parents

She's done it again and that's the fourth time this morning! If you're exasperated by your child's behavior, set out some clear house rules and try putting them into force using the Naughty Step Technique.

This is one way of giving her time out, giving everyone a chance to calm down and allowing your child a moment to think over what she has done. The Naughty Step could be a step, a chair, a corner or anywhere, so long as your child will be somewhere where nothing will distract her, and is old enough to sit in a chair.

How it works

  • When your child misbehaves or breaks one of the house rules, explain what she's done wrong, tell her that her behavior is unacceptable, and warn her that if she behaves in the same way again, she'll be put on the Naughty Step. Make sure your voice remains calm, not angry, and use a low, authoritative tone.
  • Is there a particular toy or something which is triggering the situation which you could calmly remove? Or is your child tired or hungry? See if you can help resolve her frustration and move her on to another activity.
  • If she misbehaves again, immediately put her on the Naughty Step. Explain clearly why she is there and how long she must stay there (one minute per year of her age).
  • If she comes off the Naughty Step, put her back on using gentle but firm movements and keep putting her back onto the step until she realizes that you're committed to keeping her there for the agreed set time.
  • Once your child has completed the agreed set time on the Naughty Step, crouch down so you're on the same level, use a low and authoritative tone of voice, and explain why you put her there. Ask her to apologize, and when she does, praise her warmly with a kiss and a cuddle. Say thank you, go back to what you were doing and forget about the incident.
  • If your child refuses to apologize (or does something like shouts "sorry" in a way which makes you think she probably doesn't mean it!), continue this technique until she realizes that you need a proper apology. But don't forget the kiss and cuddle at the end!

Variations on the Naughty Step for older children

Older children will outgrow the Naughty Step, so try to cultivate in them a sense of responsibility for their actions by creating a reflection room or chill-out zone. They can be asked to go there when they're angry to give them time and physical space to think things over.

Once disciplined, however, it is especially important to find out why your child behaved in a way which was out of character, as understanding their actions will help you to prevent it occurring again.

Christmas Shopping - It's That Time of Year Again

A season to rejoice:
When the word CHRISTMAS is uttered, the mind is overwhelmed with joy, full of zeal. The mind transcends from the present state to a world of joy. The word itself spreads the fragrance of happiness. It is not a single day, but a season to celebrate. A season to decorate the homes and offices, making a difference. A season for rejoicing with everyone. A season for sharing. A season for gifting others. People spend their hard earned money in shopping and presenting gifts to their loved ones and the poor. In such occasions, the one gifting the other is happy to see their loved ones rejoicing, while receiving the gift. People wanting to gift their loved ones, search for unique items for this purpose.

Colorful gifts:
There are a variety of items available for shopping, specially for the season. Bakers start their process of making aromatic and great tasting cakes, chocolates and so many different mouth watering items. They are of attractive shapes and sizes and colors with ecstatic flavor. The Babysitter Dilemna - Monitor Your Caregiver

One of the most difficult things I've ever had to do was hire a full time babysitter for my kids when they were young. I found it incredibly difficult to be sure that the person I chose was trustworthy and reliable. Sometimes I made bad choices and had to quickly rectify them. It was always stressful.

One summer I was at our local swim club where a young child, probably about three years old, was accompanied by a babysitter. The little boy splashed in the baby pool while the caregiver lounged nearby. The trouble was, she paid no attention to him. She read a magazine, gabbed on the phone, and even napped. I was horrified.

That evening, I called the child's mother at home. I explained that I knew this wasn't my business and I was sorry to pry, but she needed to know what I had witnessed at the pool.

As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Neighbors, friends, family members and teachers may have more interaction with your babysitter than you do. Ask them periodically what they think of your caregiver. Is she devoting an appropriate amount of time to your kids? Is she respectful toward them, kind, caring?

To me, that's the role my kids' teachers served with my babysitters. Now, as a teacher, I make sure to let the parents know how wonderful (or not so much) their child's caretaker is. There's no greater peace of mind than knowing that your children are in great hands when you arent' there.

I would love to hear your babysitter sagas.

Hexagon Quilt - Lessons I Learned From Making a Quilt

A Hexagon Quilt is not just a quilt made from hundreds of hexagon-shaped patches. It is a lesson in

a) patience;
b) ingenuity;
c) discovering how to take pleasure in making something slowly;
d) plus finding yet another fabric to add to the variety. I will expand on these qualities later in the article.

Old quilts, perhaps 100 years old or more, have been found to often still contain the paper templates, usually old letters or newspapers, it is fascinating reading these bits of family news or snippets of world affairs.

I had wanted to make a Hexagon Quilt for many years. I first saw one on a visit to the Sovereign Hill Pioneer Settlement, at Ballarat, Victoria (Australia). This wonderful tourist attraction takes all day to tour and discover, and you could still go back the next day to finish the job. In one of the Pioneer Cottages, one of the more affluent pioneers who had three rooms, my first glimpse of the bedroom included that item I had always admired on the single rough timber bed was a hexagon quilt. Not showing a particular pattern, as many do, but with lots of different fabrics, as they would have been made in those difficult circumstances, using any available scrap of fabric. I call it Country-style. I was entranced, by the fresh appearance and by the work that had obviously gone into it - as a woman who has sewn many items, I was only too well aware of the amount of time and effort that it would have taken to construct. I decided there and then that I would one day, soon, make one myself, little knowing the life lessons that it would impart to me.

I did start that year. I looked up some instructions, and discovered they are usually made using English Paper Piecing. This means;

a) a paper template is cut and a piece of fabric slightly larger is folded over the paper, pinned, tacked and sewn down; paper is removed;
b) after making hundreds of these, they are oversewn together;
c) the piece is lined, quilted, and finally slept under.

After my initial burst of enthusiasm, I was caught up in other things, and it became a UFO (unfinished object) temporarily. Then my husband had a stroke, and while he was in hospital, I needed some distraction from my worries. I pulled out my hexagons, checked out my fabric stash, and decided to go to a quilting group with my small project.

I had made a start on putting the first few hexagons together when I went along to the Wesley Patchwork and Quilting group in Adelaide, and a more pleasant, enthusiastic and helpful group of people I have yet to meet. They gave me lots of pieces from their own stashes, and helped me towards finishing the quilt, long after my husband had recovered. As it happened, I had to return to work and left the group shortly before I finished the quilt but I sent them a photo of the finished article. These are some things I learned while making the hexagon quilt.

Do one thing at a time, one hexagon at a time.

Small things accumulate. Hexagons 2 inches across make a queen-size quilt.

There's no rush. Enjoy what you're doing, enjoy the process as much as the product.

If you don't have what you need right now, you'll be able to get it sooner or later. Enjoy the time quilting. It all gets done eventually.

Variety is the spice of life. A country-style quilt contains memories of each person who gave you that fabric. Each hexagon reminds you of the pleasures of sewing and creativity.

Touching and looking at it brings a sense of accomplishment whatever happened today, I made this myself.

My hexagon quilt took me two years to make, because I didn't touch it for much of the summer - it made me feel hot! But time passes whether we quilt or not, so we might as well quilt!

Trick Or Treat Halloween Bags

I love halloween, but the treats play tricks with my weight.?I have found treats that kids love which are allergy safe, have no calories, no sugar, and leftovers can be kept for next year! My secret? I simply give out halloween toys for kids in their trick or treat bags.

Halloween toys are now available through discount stores, dollar stores and novelty companies. Halloween toys include bouncy balls that look like eyeballs; monster finger puppets; spinning spider tops, stretchy insects, etc. There are also toys for school, like Halloween pencils, erasers and pencil toppers decorated with witches, ghosts, ghouls, pumpkins, black cats and candy corn. I really like the craft items which kids can decorate themselves. Craft items can include Halloween wood shapes, coloring books, stampers, stencils and putty.

Novelties can cost as little as 5 cents, with most averaging 15-20 cents. Therefore, it is not any more expensive to buy toys than candy. Halloween toys are perfect for school, especially the pencils and erasers, since they pose no threat to children with allergies. Toys are also safer than candy since kids do not eat them and there is no worry of pills or razor blades being inserted into a pencil or bouncy ball.

Best of all, toys can be stored for the next Halloween if you buy too much. In fact, you can take advantage of after Halloween sales to store up on items for next year. If you are making Halloween trick or treat bags, or party favor bags, you can always add in a piece or two of candy for tradition. Giving Halloween toys does cut down on the calories and sugar kids consume. In an age where obesity is a big problem with our youth, substituting toys for candy can only be a good thing.

One last tip: If you do not want to eat the candy you buy for trick or treating, get a brand of candy you do not like. That way you won't be tempted!

Halloween Costumes - Great Halloween Costumes For Adults and Children

So what are you going out as this year for Halloween?

Halloween costumes are a must for party goers on October 31st, the question is - what are you going to wear this year? With so many costumes ideas to choose from, narrowing it down to your favorite choice can be tricky. Let's take a look at some of the more popular costume choices for 2009 and see what will work best for you and the kids too.

Let's start with Halloween costumes for babies. It's always been popular to dress up infants in fruit inspired costumes - everyone loves the adorable baby dressed like a pumpkin or strawberry, but many parents also like to dress them up like little bunnies or Disney characters. Just make sure that the costume is safe for infants - no loose-pieces that could be choking hazards, make sure the costume isn't so big they get lost inside it - making it hard for them to breathe and make sure they are warm enough if you plan on taking them door-to-door.

When it comes to children's Halloween costumes - the sky's the limit. With so many cool action heroes, Disney characters and TV icons to choose from, picking the right costume can be tricky. Fortunately most kids already know what they want to be for Halloween long before the holiday strikes. This year's popular costume choices for boys are Wolverine from the x-men, pirate costumes, G.I Joe costumes, transformers costumes and Harry Potter costumes. For the Girls, Hannah Montana costumes, witch costumes, princesses and fairy costumes.

Let's not forget about the kids at heart. This year's top choices for adult Halloween costumes for men are: Wolverine from the x-men, Rorschach from the Watchmen, Snake Eyes from G.I Joe and of course, Michael Jackson costumes (with jacket, glove etc) For the ladies, this year's top picks are: Wonder Women, Nun costumes, Elvira costumes and Bollywood inspired costumes.

Your costume should be whatever you want it to be. If your more of the creative type, making your own costume can be part of the fun of Halloween. If you're buying your costume this year, don't worry that you may not get what you want - hit the internet and order up your desires, including plus size costumes for men and women.

Remote Control Cars - How to Start Your Hobby

In the world of motorized hobby vehicles, remote control cars are a great place to start. Being much less complex than many of the boats and airplanes that are available, they make it easy to get a feel for how to use these models. It also gives you an idea of what types and styles you like best and is a great jumping off point for getting into more involved remote controlled vehicles. These cars are often strikingly similar to the real thing and, as such, offer many variations for size, engines, price range, as well as of styles.

The first thing to consider when starting a hobby involving remote control cars is what type of power source you prefer. Battery-powered vehicles are typically less expensive to purchase and to run. Their electric engines also typically make them easier to use. However, they do not provide as much power as their gas or nitro fueled counterparts.

Gasoline-powered cars are appropriate for people planning to seriously race their models or for those requiring more power and speed. However, they are more expensive to run and need to be used outdoors as they emit fumes and smoke. They are also a bit more complicated to use and so, while they may be a good thing to play around with, electric controlled cars are usually a better bet for beginners.

The next decision you will have to make is whether or not you want to build the car yourself or if you want to buy a pre-made version. Again, for someone just starting out, it might be fun to see what goes into making remote control cars. But in order to really practice your driving skills, you should start with a model that is already built. You always have the option to try and customize and tinker with your vehicle later on as you get more involved and well-versed in the hobby and the actual cars themselves.

A good way to start out customizing your vehicle is with the remote control system. You can purchase versions that are Ready to Run, or RTR, right out of the box, but you also have the option to buy one that is Almost Ready to Run, or ARTR. ARTR cars give you the ability choose your own radio controller system. Although starting with the basics will give you a good foundation for your hobby with remote control cars, you will quickly be able to delve into the world of serious racing and customization.

10 Ways To Brighten The Holidays

Christmas is just around the corner and soon it will be mass pandemonium. Even though many of us shop online, many of us will still be standing in long lines, making last minute purchases, fighting for parking spaces and struggling to find the best electronics, music, clothing and gifts for our families, friends and loved ones. As we concern ourselves buying gifts for the people we care about, maybe we could take a minute to think about the people who are less fortunate and what we could do to make their holiday season a little better as well. Here are a few ideas to help spread some holiday cheer.

1) Do you have unused blankets taking up space in your closets? Why not donate them to a homeless shelter or shelter for battered women?

2) How about going through clothing that you and your family members have outgrown or no longer wear? A coat could help keep someone warm who doesn抰 have one. A pair of shoes could keep someone抯 feet warm and dry.

3) Why not take the time to make a gift basket for an elderly person or neighbor who you don抰 see very often and take a few minutes to visit them?

4) Is there a divorcee or widowed person in your neighborhood who may need some work done around their home? Fixing something or cleaning the house of someone for free, when it is hard for them to get around, could be a big help.

5) Volunteering for Sub For Santa could be a real blessing for a family in need.

6) Serving or donating a holiday dinner could brighten someone抯 day, especially if they are down on their luck, and can抰 afford it themselves.

7) Sometimes just spending the time to talk to someone can greatly improve their lives. Maybe there is a confused teenager or child who could use some encouragement or direction in their lives.

8) If you have the time, visiting a hospital, reading to the elderly, caroling or visiting the sick could help to cheer them up. Some of these people have no friends or family to visit them and end up spending the holidays alone.

9) Donating to your favorite charity can change lives.

10) Try to be as patient and kind as possible. The holidays can be very stressful at times. If you smile and show patience even when you don抰 feel like it, you may be surprised how helpful that can be at defusing potentially unpleasant situations.

There is a whole big world out there and we are all a part of it. By helping others, we help ourselves to make a better world for us to live in. Little gestures can mean a lot. We can make each year a little better than the last if we try. Happy Holidays!

Pregnancy - Nausea Remedies and Managing Them

Remedies for morning sickness are not an exact science. As we know, it's not apparent what the cause of the nausea during the pregnancy is, so choosing the right remedy can be difficult in itself. It can become more of a trial and error scenario for the expecting mother. Some common remedies to try are staying away from hostile foods, consuming carbohydrates, eating small meals throughout the day, frequent fluids, and trying acupressure treatments.

Food intake plays a very important part in managing nausea. If foods that normally would upset a stomach are taken, it can make things worse. It is very important to always avoid foods that can tax your system, make you gag, or induce any sort of heartburn. One common food remedy is the consumption of carbohydrates. This is the place where eating crackers periodically can keep the stomach from vomiting. It is always a good idea to have some by the bed and eat small amounts with feeling nausea.

The frequency of meals is very important. Eating 3 large meals a day can be detrimental to the stomach. It is excellent practice when managing nausea to eat small meals frequently throughout the day. This keeps the stomach busy and it seems to turn down the need to vomit. In between these meals, drinking fluids is very important. Dehydration is a major factor in pregnancy nausea and that can be avoided by consuming fluids. A pregnant woman can even consider taking some of the sports drinks that replenish sugars and salts.

Acupressure has been shown to help with serious cases of morning sickness. A health care provider can run some tests and perform this technique on the expecting mother. It is always important to seek a medical professional for acupressure and not try something alone.

Relax, stay stress free, manage the food and fluid intake, stay hydrated, and seek a medical professional are excellent ways to defeat the unpleasantness of pregnancy nausea.

Raising a Confident Child - What Every Parent Should Know

A child is born. "Is this world good or bad?" he asks. "Is it safe or isn't it?" "Am I good, worthy and competent or am I not?" He waits to see if his innate hopes will be fulfilled. Just as a baby bird has expectations from its parents when it is born, so does a human-child. His first natural expectation is that he will be held close to his mother. This tells him that the world is safe and that he is strongly connected to his first spiritual source and to the rest of his species.

The child grows. He waits to receive further signals that tell him what kind of place the world is, what kind of people are in it, and if he is good, worthy and competent. His mother, his father and his other leaders send strong messages that the world is loving, its people are friendly and he is capable.

The child grows. He is commended for his efforts, he is made to feel proud and able, he is hugged and held and he is seen for the individual that he is, not for whom they wish he would have been. The energy he feels from his mother and father is safe. It is strong. He knows this is natural and he is content in his world. He grows as straight as an arrow.

A child is born. "Is this world good or bad?" he asks. "Is it safe or is it not?" "Am I good, worthy and competent or am I not?" He waits to see if his innate hopes will be fulfilled. His mother hardly touches him, hardly holds him. He spends much of his time in his baby seat, in his baby swing, in his baby bed. He knows this is not natural, but will his parents hear what he is saying? His connection to his first spiritual source and to the rest of his species is broken, never to be fully repaired.

The child grows. He waits to receive further signals that tell him what kind of place the world is, what kind of people are in it, and if he is good, worthy and competent. His mother, his father and his other leaders send strong messages that the world is unloving, its people are unfriendly and he is bad, unworthy and incapable.

Their energy, sent through the harsh words they speak to him, the body energy they generate, the lack of human touch he receives, the impatient way they look at him, tells him that the world is not safe, it is not friendly, and he is incapable. They don't mean to, but his mother and his father send anxious energy to their child. They are angry, they often snap and they do not realize that they can break his spirit as easily as they can break a twig.

They have been misguided from their own naturally peaceful and content journey in life. He knows this is not natural and he is discontent in his world. He grows as crooked as the bent willow. While they were never intended to be, our children are sometimes our best teachers. They will guide us to where we need to go if we have lost our way. They heed us by reflecting the anxious energy that they receive. They just hope that we can hear them.

Molar Pregnancy

A molar pregnancy is rare, but can cause severe complications when it is discovered and evacuated. The actual medical term is hydatidiform mole. It means the pregnancy has not produced a fetus. The bulk of the product in the uterus is an abnormal placenta. There are two types of molar pregnancies that will be discussed, but the most important point of these pregnancies is the aftercare.

The first type is called a complete molar pregnancy. Essentially it means that the product of conception is strictly the placenta which has grown abnormally. There is no fetus. There are rarely any symptoms that indicate there is a problem. She may experience nausea, vomiting and perhaps spotting too, but all of these can also be regular signs of normal pregnancy. The way in which this happens is that a sperm fertilizes an empty egg; therefore all that grows is the placenta. It is normally discovered using an ultrasound. The placenta would resemble like a bunch of grapes. At this point the uterus must be evacuated. This procedure is commonly called a D&C.

The complication that can happen after the evacuation is that if all of the tissue is not removed it can begin to grow again. This tissue can also metastasize like cancer and grow in other areas like the lungs, brain and vagina. The recommended action is that you do not attempt to have another pregnancy for the next twelve months following the molar pregnancy. If the molar begins to grow again the pregnancy related hormone will start to rise. Your doctor will order chest x-rays and CAT scans of your brain to be sure that the tissue has not infected those areas. If it has, treatment is using a chemotherapy drug called methotrexate; which can be given as a single injection. Sometime a series of injection is needed but one is typically enough to eradicate the invading tissue.

The second type is called a partial molar. This happens when two sperm fertilize one egg and instead of producing twins, one fetus would grow with an abnormal placenta. This fetus typically dies in utero and is not considered a viable pregnancy. The fetus has too many chromosomes to survive outside the uterus. This type of molar pregnancy does not pose the same danger as the first type. However, the follow up care is similar; the HCG levels needs to be monitored carefully along with physical exams and no attempts to become pregnant for one year.

Once you have had a molar pregnancy, you would be at greater risk for having another one. This can make a woman experience a sense of loss. Even though the result of conception was not a baby, the anticipation of having a baby along with parenting hopes and dreams are gone. You would have to wait for another 12 months before trying to get pregnant again. Take that time to get help to deal with the loss, either through counseling or support groups.

Congratulations, You're 24 Weeks Pregnant

You're now 24 weeks pregnant and time is going by quickly. Can you believe you're almost two thirds of the way through pregnancy?

Changes are occurring rapidly now with you and your baby. Let's take a look at what is going on at the moment, and what you can expect in the future.

Baby

Currently, your baby is approximately 1 pound to 1 1/4 pounds in weight and is 8"-11" in length. Of course, baby is letting you know its presence by moving all around now. It may even feel like they've taken up gymnastics at times, but this is perfectly normal.

At 24 weeks pregnant, your baby's brain is really beginning to mature at a faster pace. Lungs are forming and will be producing sufacant in the near future.

Mother

Since you are really starting to show signs of being pregnant, you may notice yourself rubbing your belly at times during the day.

Something else you may also begin to notice is stretch marks. It's a common occurrence for women to see signs of stretch marks at this point in pregnancy. Rubbing lotion on your skin can help in reducing these stretch marks, but having them is a normal aspect of being pregnant.

Be sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated during your pregnancy. It really is easy to become dehydrated during pregnancy, especially during the summer months.
